They sound great in that setting, I had flats on mine which gave a really smooth tone but you will always need an amp.

I think a lot of it comes down to whether or not it's finished, the tone seems to be topier on my finished fingerboard than the un-finished.

I used to have a Tascam which was pretty good, there are loads out there, depends on your budget.
