1. To be fair this guy is obviously the leading world expert on this (no sarcasm) I found his post very interesting.
 2.
True, that's why I stated IMO. Back in the 70's all the young guitarist I knew were studying Hendrix, Page, Beck, Clapton and All the Kings (BB,Albert & Freddy) not Zappa or Garcia. Don't get me wrong, there were some things that Zappa did that I consider pure genius. Blue
Jack White isn't the most technical player in the world but the man puts 100% into every song, he plays so free, he may miss a few notes here and there but he makes up for that in pure energy. This cover sums him up for me, I think he is my guitar hero. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kS60oTRxh0g
 3.
I like Jack White. Not from my generation, however I'll give him respect for being super entertaining and an innovator. However IMO he's not a guitar hero, neither is Frank Zappa or Jerry Garcia. Blue
That's subjective.
 4. As far as Rock and Roll stars go, I know he isn't everyone's cup 'o tea but Jack White is IMO the rock star of my generation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3MJru1tfZQ
 5. I don't think you HAVE to study anyone, you play how you want and have your own influences.
 6.
No more so than the 'I'm really down with the kids' music' middle-aged men who pretend to like any old sh*t if it might make the teenage supermarket check-out girl see past the ear hair and the grey chest wig. It is a tragic thing to observe, somewhat akin to Dad-dancing or wearing over-tight blue jeans. The problem is that many of these types can't bear to see themselves as 'Clarksons' well on the way to being worm food. This is basically because they've believed all that Golden Youth crap when they were 15 and never grew up. So now they trumpet their love of 'ground-breaking new music', blissfully unaware that the target audience of 20 year-olds looks at them and thinks 'Who is that silly old c**t?' This denial of reality leads the wrinkly hipster into the hilariously unsustainable argument that today's music is really great and that the unlimited availability of paint-by-numbers bedroom Mac recordings is a good thing. It really is very depressing.
Which is why you should listen to what you like, if you like old stuff cool, if you prefer newer music great, listening to either doesn't make you a better or worse person, judging someone on what they listen to or listening to something just to make yourself seem cool makes you a twat.
 7.
Cool, valid point. Me, I like SuperStars. But some I like more than others. Blue
I just like quality music, the more people able to produce music will mean more quality will get out there, finding it is the tricky bit.
 8.
I guess you have a point. You can record with just about any bass. It doesn't have to be "quality". More people can make music. I guess that's a good thing? Blue
Of course it is but it does mean there will be less superstars which in my view is a good thing.
 9.
"I didn't" Blue
Did you just quote yourself?
 10.
That's cool, however, me personally would not call or describe any Squire as "high end". Fine basses, but not high end. For example a Squire is not a Sadowsky. I think most guys would consider a Sadowsky as "high end". Blue
But you have an instrument that is of a recordable quality for very little money which means more people can make music.
 11.
I think they can record a lot cheaper. High end gear ( guitars, amps, basses, PAs ) are not cheap in any sense of the word. Blue
You can get high quality instruments cheap, you can get a second hand Squire VMJ for about £100 and they are better quality than a Fender would have been in the 70s.
 12.
Ok, hey I'm open to your position. If The Stones and McCartney are no longer as big or as important as they once were, why are they still selling out stadiums at $160.00 a pop. Somebody must think they're still important or still entertaining? So, I'm looking for your response to the "why?" Blue
"The nostalgia circuit is big business but that doesn't make it relevant. Most of the people that go to these shows are old farts who are still desperately trying to convince that themselves they are still young & relevant. "
 13.
It'll be interesting to see what bands are playing in 50 years time. I very much doubt it'll be stuff that's in the 'charts' today - at the risk of generalisation, it's not memorable or particularly well crafted - we're almost back into the 'stagnant' 70's music scene.
But the charts are no longer relevant the whole industry has changed, that doesn't mean that the quality output has got any worse in fact due to instruments being cheaper and the technological advances means that talented people can make music without the money barrier.
 14.
Commercial success does not guarantee Taylor's music will stand the test of time. The Stones and Paul McCartney are still selling out stadiums to several generations 50 years after the fact. Let's use Taylor for your generation, we can check back with each other 50 years from now and see how she's doing. Blue
The only reason we are talking about Taylor Swift is because you brought her up and then said there were no more megastars even though you had named one yourself. I think you put far too much emphasis on age, pretty much every thread you mention your age, to use a sporting phrase "If you're good enough, you're old enough", I think you'd find some great music if you stopped living in the past and actually listened to newer quality music.
 15.
so what is better then.?. Hip hop is not all about social commentary. Some people actually like the sounds. If you listen to white lines, it's as relevant today as it ever was. You must have missed that maybe
I agree, but this stuff does nothing for me and to be honest I prefer British Hip-hop, something like this for a start. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeV2cExvnMI
 16.
I have no idea what age you were at the time (1982) but it's probably as much about social comment of the time as it was about the music.
That's why it's aged, it's not really relevant any more I'm sure it was great at the time but issues move on and new artists take up the baton.
 17. 80s Hip-Hop has aged terribly IMO, I think there is better stuff around today.
 18.
I'm 61, I don't think I have ever heard a Taylor Swift record, so I wouldn't know what shes good at. Blue
So again you haven't heard her but feel you can judge because she isn't from the 60s?
 19.
There was plenty of cheesy pop in the 60s and 70s. But there was plenty of ground breaking quality music too. It's a complicated debate. Back in the 60s and 70s bands made albums, I'm not even sure if that's done any more. Just like buying music with money, does anyone do that? Blue
Quire and this is my point, you have come into this with a great deal of knowledge of one era and very little of another era but still think you can dismiss an entire generation.
 20. And to be fair Taylor Swift is very good at what she does.
 21.
Yeah your probably right. I think I'll ditch all my Aretha Franklin and James Brown records and start listening to more Taylor Swift and One Direction. Blue
Yep there was no cheesy pop in past just good quality music.
 22.
You nailed it, most of our passions lie in what was happening when we were growing up. I was 10 years old when all those British bands came to the US and not only gave us great new exciting sounds they also brought our attention to our own American music. Unfortunately us Babby Boomers are always going to win the argument with a simple where are your;

Lennon & McCartney's
Beatles
Stones (are there any bands from the 80s or 90s still filling stadiums)
Mick Jaggers
James Browns
Aretha Franklins
Al Greens
Carol Kings
Laura Nyros
On an on and on. Sorry for the old guy rant, but these facts are tough to argue. Blue
Very limited music out there then, since the 90's there have been more genres more artists pushing the bounds of what can be done but there are no more global superstars, music is better for that, a lot of those artists listed's material is mediocre except for The Beatles. Problem is you're obviously stuck in a generation and are totally ignorant to the music of the last 20 years but instead of trying to look into it you are dismissing it out of hand.
 23.
. I consider myself lucky in that I honestly believe that I grew up at the best time in musical history. I've lived through all the changes and revolutions that apply to my musical interests.
Everyone does, the music when you're young will always be the best to you. Not a fan of the ageism on this thread, old people can be the most disrespectful people at time, the amount of times I've held the door open for an older person without as much as a nod. Older pub bands tend to bore me, they really are re-hashing old tropes that were done better 30-40 years ago, as was mentioned earlier in the thread technology has move in and the people who are embracing that are the ones who are out there making the best music at the moment not the old 12 bar and a solo merchants.
