I've had my eye on those (in a could't ever hope to afford one kind of way). The sound samples don't help

Fender logo JV Squier Precision, low start
edpirie replied to Paul S's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Yes, have to agree. I have a big Fender logo ’62 P and for me it’s better than the other Ps I’ve played (70’s, AVRI, US standard, Roadworn, MIJ, but not had a go of a pre-CBS yet), and some of those would cost significantly more. And apparently very consistent, these early ones, so not much risk to the buyer. Yes collectability, but as a player’s bass worth the money in my opinion. -
Just had a listen to flats/Jazz on Youtube, sound really nice - I probably like them as they make the Jazz sound more like a Precision
Exactly!!

Someone more knowledgeable than me will come along and confirm but I'm pretty sure Bernard Edwards used dead rounds for most of the Chic stuff. Flats on a Jazz would be less common than flats on a P-bass but can sound fantastic - there are some good clips on Youtube that give you the idea. To my ear they round out the scooped tone of a Jazz without getting rid of the articulation which can be a pretty good end result depending on what you're after. Can also sound great slapped if you're into that kind of thing. Have fun experimenting!

Just bought a MIJ P-bass off Ash and he was a great bloke to do business with. Very good communication, quick dispatch and great job on the packing which is always appreciated. Thoroughly recommended to all BC'ers!

Hmm, interesting. I’m seriously considering the same thing (P bass classic in sonic blue with ebony board), and also in Central London. Let’s keep in touch – if one of us takes the plunge the other could try it out, and if the plunger doesn’t like it then the ditherer might take it off his hands.

I'm tempted, as some respected players rate them highly, but then there has been the odd report on TB of basses arriving in poor condition needing fretwork etc. The toughest part is not being able to try one and get a feel for the neck. I suspect many who have bought them have been to NAMM where he seems to go each year. Now there's a thought...

For anyone else interested - reply from Moollon below (very quick to get back to me): Thank you so much for your inquiry regarding the Moollon P-Classic IV. All Moollon P-Classic basses are built to order by Moollon president Young Joon "YJ" Park and shipped directly from our shop here in Seoul, and we'd be more than happy to do the same for you in the UK as well. Please note that due to NAMM Show YJ will not be able to begin work on any new orders until mid-to-late February, but the good news is that if you choose a color from a P-Classic body in stock, then full assembly, setup, and preparations for packing will be completed in under 4 weeks, so we can expect a delivery by sometime in March 2016. As for availability, here's what we presently have to choose from: • P-Classic IV Standard Alder finishes USD$1990: Desert Sand, Vintage White, Dakota Red, Fiesta Red, Daphne Blue, Sonic Blue (Same as Tim Lefebvre's No.1 P-Classic, lacquer now almost faded to "Light Surf Green") • P-Classic IV Metallic Alder finishes USD$2090: Green Metallic, Candy Apple Red, Copper Gold • P-Classic IV Sparkle Alder finishes USD$2190: Gold Sparkle, Silver Sparkle Also... - Above prices include (1) choice of a Gator GC-Bass or Reunion Blues RBX case, and (2) free shipping to your door. - Payment can be made either by PayPal or by bank wire transfer (your choice). - Shipping to the UK via EMS requires about 6 to 8 days, and we'll provide you with tracking information when the bass leaves the shop. - If you have a favorite vintage Fender finish you'd like to see, YJ could probably have it done in about 3 months PS: Please feel free to look over the P-Classic IV's specifications for your own reference... • 42.5mm nut width (38mm J-neck width also available), with a 1st fret neck thickness of about 20mm to 21mm, and 24mm at the 12th fret. • Standard 34" scale, 7.25" fretboard radius, Makassar Ebony on one-piece quartersawn maple neck, although one-piece maple board/neck is also available at no extra cost. • 2-piece select alder body (ash available in 2TS and Blonde Transparent with special order, +$100) • 20 very thin layers of nitrocellulose lacquer • Custom designed, tested, and built Pre-CBS-spec (higher zinc content than current MIA Fender) tuners • Vintage-spec steel bridge plate and threaded saddles, 100% in-house design and fabrication by YJ himself • Pickup based on Young Joon's 1959 and 1960 Fender Precision Basses, rated at approx. 10.5k ohms • Average weight: 4.0kg

According to Chambers, 'luck out' means to have a run or instance of good luck (N American). Always the way I have understood it too. But either meaning could apply to buying a Fender - I'm just realising how darned variable they are as I hunt for a stablemate for my trusty JV.

Hi there Does anyone know how one would go about checking out a Moollon P-Bass in the UK? The only UK supplier listed on their website is Sounds Great in Cheshire, but they only seem to do the pedals. I've seen a few references to them here including Paul Turner - just wondering how people have come across them - abroad or have they just ordered blind? Thanks!

SOLD. Tanglewood electro-acoustic - Final Drop
edpirie replied to bassfan's topic in Basses For Sale
I have one of these and they’re great basses – way better than the price would suggest. You can get the action lower than on other acoustics that I’ve tried and it puts out a good amount of volume – enough to jam with two acoustic guitars. Can’t say I have amp’d it up, but acoustically I’ve been very happy with it. Have a bump on me! -
I'd say it largely depends on your bass/strings. When I demo'd with Precision and flats (TH500 head), there wasn't much added by the tweeter, but with a Jazz and nickels it really made a difference. Only 25% on, but that was enough to let the Jazz sparkle come through.

Phil Jones H-850 headphones and Edifier H850 the same?
edpirie replied to Karl Derrick's topic in General Discussion
So they're not the same in technical terms, but according for one BC'er who uses both there's no discernible difference in practice. Which is great news if you can't afford the PJB's, but if you can it would be worth trying them because we're all very different the way we hear things and so for some there might be a clear difference to justify the higher price. Fair summary? -
I sold my 3leaf Enabler and bought the Bighead. The Bighead doesn't sound quite as good as the Enabler for bass, and the aux in certainly doesn't, but it's still very good and pros are no psu and it's also a DAC for recording. That was enough to persuade me although I do miss the sparkle of the 3leaf unit.
