They have one in Wunjo's at £995. Got a call from Laurence on Friday to say it's the first one into Europe and went along today to try it out. It looks great - a really nice warm mahogany, and if anything the neck felt a little comfier than the one-pickup, although I'm sure they're to the same spec. Overall I wasn't blown away. The back pickup is a little bit closer to the bridge, and doesn't have the same punch/thump that the one pickup delivers. In fact solo'd it sounds more like a Jazz back pick-up which isn't my thing. It's better blended or front pick-up solo where it gives a nice woody semi-acoustic vibe. I'm not convinced how well it would sit in a mix, unlike the one-pickup which only does that mid-range honk but does it really well. Anyway, if anyone's interested I can't recommend Wunjo's highly enough and the guys down there will make you feel very welcome.

As well as many of the aforementioned: Flamed maple, particularly coloured flamed maple LEDs (ones on the side just about OK) Block inlays unless it's a '68 to '70s Jazz

I sold one (twice) end of last year and it went for £900-1,000. I think you could get more if you were prepared to wait - have seen one go for £1,350 a couple of years back on Ebay. But even though they are great basses for a particular type of player, they don't have a huge following so that limits the value.

Thanks cameltoe - I tried 21frets but it's almost exclusively Squier JV and very largely Strat rather than basses, so not much that I could find on there to enlighten me.

I understand the deal with Squier JVs, in fact I have a 1982 big Fender logo Precision which is a great bass. But I know very little about Fender JVs, which I think were domestic Js/Ps from the same period. Are they a similar quality? Better? The reason for asking is that there is an oly white 1984 Fender JV Jazz at The Gallery, but it’s up for just over a grand, which is £200 more than they have a Squier JV Jazz for (although probably some scope for negotiation in both those prices).

Ah, that may well be true, I was just going on other posts I’ve read here. This is the only one I’ve owned and it has the classic sub bass with -1 soloed that I was after from hearing others use them. No label on the back – it must have been the victim of Velcro.

And here's all the blurb/photos on the Guild site: http://guildguitars.com/g/starfire-bass-ii/ Having thought I wouldn't like the mahogany I'm seriously tempted by this...

There's a single pup in cherry red at Wunjo's, at least there was last weekend.

Classic octaver - rugged as anything and for me tracks better than any other octaver (Octabvre included). I'm just not using my pedal board at the moment and as I need the funds to pay off my new '74 Jazz this has to go - sale only. Pedal is used but not abused and works as it should. Has had velcro on the bottom but none attached at present. Price includes UK postage, or can meet up in London for £60.

Precision Bass Shootout (8 basses from 1964 - 2015)
edpirie replied to Bass Pedal Geek's topic in Bass Guitars
To my ears, the '64 is the only one where the tone control doesn't sound like it's muffling the sound i.e. 100% on is a rich dubby sound whereas on the others it just sounds woolly. Maybe the flats help though - got to say the first two with flats are the real deal for me with the '64 out in front. -
Thanks for posting this - very interesting especially as I am deliberating about putting in an order for a custom built Jazz type and so have been thinking about pickup spacing, maple v rosewood etc. To me this shows that there are clear differences when you bring all these factors into play e.g. difference between the '66 and the '72, but there is still that fundamental Jazz tone. Where I think you would notice the difference is in a full band mix, where the clarity and extra bite of the '72 might cut through a bit better. I recently picked up a nice maple neck '74 Jazz which has a similar character as your '72, and it's the first Jazz I've owned that really does punch through in a mix. That said, the '66 has a lovely warmth to the tone, so if you have space in the mix to hear it, would be a good option. Must say I found the Fodera unimpressive.

It's even less than that unless there are works on the line - an hour tops and trains every half an hour - I used to live there but no longer.

Not sure if these prices are up to date, but I don't know a better workshop than The Bass Gallery and they are quoting from £20. Worth a call if you're anywhere near London. http://thebassgallery.com/workshop

Is that going to be the only option? Would probably decide me on the single pup.
-
Hi - any information on neck profile? Width at nut and depth front to back would be interesting, or comparison with other types out there (Jazz, P, Starfire, Hofner etc). Thanks

I only asked about release date, and while I said UK it wouldn't surprise me if July/Aug is US with UK a bit later. I'd expect this to be a straight adaptation of the single pup with all else the same, but I guess colours might be varied to give more momentum to the relaunch. I'm not even sure if I'd go for the 2 pup as the single has a great core tone. Tried the 90's Starfire at The Gallery recently (2 humbuckers) and didn't much care for it, but that's a rather different animal.

Tanglewood TW155A electro acoustic £200 Withdrawn
edpirie replied to Muppet's topic in Basses For Sale
IMHO it's far from overpriced. Just bought one myself from a fellow BCer for the same and very happy with it. You an get nice lowish action and it has a good tone that projects well enough for a purely acoustic jam with two guitarists. I recommend especially at this price, but you're right that not many bass players go for them. -
I asked Guild about the two pup version and it's due out July/August.

There's a 90's Guild Starfire at The Bass Gallery at the moment. I went up there to try it out and it's in great condition, up for c. £1,500. Wonderful tone palm-muted tone and probably would be great with a pick as well. Worth a try if you're in this kind of ballpark.
