  1. I’ll add my voice here - one of the best cabs ever conceived and built IMO, and the Series 1s are the ones to have. I miss mine - excellent build quality, great tone and really light/easy to transport. If that wasn’t enough, one of basschat’s finest sellers and a bargain price. Sort of pleased it’s gone as I’ve nowhere to put it.
  2. Wow, utter bargain if you can lift it. Very expensive and very desirable on release - saw loads of major touring bands using these
  3. Wow, not seen one of these for years. Really well made basses from two very highly skilled luthiers (from the period when the two were still together, I think). Used to see them playing in a pub rock band around Manchester and the bass-player (the Smith element of the partnership I think) used one of these. The model for sale looks to be in great condition - I'd love it but as a nostalgia purchase and long-scale it wouldn't get a lot of play and deserves to be used.
  4. I do exactly what you do Freddie and it works really well for me. My amp (an Agi DB750) has both a 'return' and a 'preamp in' - I use that latter but it's the same kind of thing. I really like the power amp of the 750 but I'm not a massive lover of valve front-ends/preamps. So, it's either a Hellborg or Mesa solid state pre straight into the Agi's power section. If I want to use effects (which is rare), I can use the send and return of the Hellborg. Lovely and still a fairly simple set up.
  5. Wow, stunning instrument and a bargain price (and from one of BC’s real gentlemen!)
  6. Absolutely beautiful - my favourite of all the Js and this one appears to be in lovely, played condition. I don't play long-scale any more so the stress is reduced a little, though still a fabulous thing to admire.
  7. Wow, that's immense - I've just seen some of the demos and it's a do all rig and (IMO) an incredible price. A British built valve amp too!
  8. I've had a few signature basses over the years but all entirely coincidentally and purchased as they were fantastic instruments in their own right. The sig designation neither turns me on or off, if it's a great instrument that fits my needs, then I'm happy with whatever it might say somewhere on the bass or the accompanying documentation. I have a couple at the moment, a Stanley Clarke and a Wilcock Mullarkey: both outstanding shorties and neither with any kind of identifying logo (not that it would really bother me). Neither with any kind of price premium either as far as I know, though both were bought used. I might hesitate to buy a price-hiked sig bass that was no different/better than its 'standard' counterpart.
  9. Lovely and a great price (IMO) - the cherry sunburst is lovely but these tend to look a little more subtle when seen for real. I had an Essence in this colour and photographs always appear over-saturated. A full-on, laminated- through-neck, filter based Alembic at a bargain price (again IMO).
  10. The top looks like some sort of maple burl to me
  11. I’ve had a couple of these and only sold as I’m playing short scale almost exclusively. US Laklands really do have the finest Fender type necks I’ve ever played. Only the Celinders and a Sei Jazz came close. Almost magical and better than any Fender I’ve owned or played. Love the colour on this too
  12. Saw the Lightning Seeds on Friday and pretty sure the bass-player was using one of these. A mate of mine uses one in a loud three-piece blues rock band too. Never skips a beat and sounds wonderful. Great bit of kit - always been impressed when I've used them too.
  13. Lovely bass, great tone, and some outstanding playing from the original owner!
  14. Absolutely lovely - effortless playability and an astonishing range of tones

    SOLD

not really my kind of thing, though that does look to be beautifully designed and put together - some lovely detail and carving
  16. Some lovely tight playing (as ever!) and a really nice 'track appropriate' tone. A lovely bass indeed - I've wanted to try one of these for a while
  17. Eek! If you need to borrow a bass…
  18. I'd certainly agree - for the current price, I'd say they're a bit of a (relative) bargain: a UK hand-built, boutique bass (and an extremely good one that is really well-thought through in every respect). For me, these compare very favourably with some of the other (excellent) UK boutique offerings - they also offer something that is genuinely different
  19. Absolutely beautiful - what a lovely, understated but very classy colour. I think the finish will have been from Bow - utterly superb work. I picked-up a Mullarkey a few months ago and it's been a revelation. I've spent years with active only basses but Viv's approach to passives works incredibly well. Playability is superb on these and they're just such good fun - a joy to pick-up and play for hours. This looks like a new(?) approach to the control layout - is it VVT? Most I've seen are VT with a three-way pick-up selector. A very lovely bass indeed
  20. Utter bargain! I gigged one of these for many years (with a 4x10) in a variety of settings and it was never found wanting in any respect.
  21. I can strongly recommend Bow Finishers to the South of London - the original may have been a Bow finish? Sei build some absolutely beautiful basses - real artistry and artisanal skill - this looks like a fantastic example
  22. Wow, that looks to be in superb condition. Wonderful instruments with a unique tone. The last image appears to show strings running over the nut after the taper (not necessarily a problem in my experience). Some short-scale strings aren't sufficiently long and medium-scale can be a better option (though other short strings work well). I'm assuming it's a walnut top? Beautiful and good luck!
  23. I currently use an Aguilar head (DB750) with and Agi cab (SL112) or a Berg cab (HD210). There's a slightly rounder and warmer tone to the SL112 and slightly more focused mids (upper and lower) to the HD210. I don't really have a preference, both work beautifully with a range of basses from passive to active. With a quality head and quality cabs, I doubt you'd have much of a problem (matched or not), though some pairings don't appear to work well and I'd recommend that you trial any combinations before handing over a lot of cash. I remember there was some talk of the big Agi amps not working well with some Epifani cabs over on Talkbass years back. My criteria with cabs are usually: tone (and compatibility in terms of impedance); size/portability (small doesn't always equate to easy to maneouvre); and, weight. I tend to use reasonably small cabs - even with a very big amp - as their key purpose is personal monitoring, practice at home and recording. I spent much of my youth with 4x12s, 8x10s and massive 18" bins (Cerwin Vega etc.) - all mix and match with a variety of amps... and with a wide variety of results! There's something very exciting about moving a ton of air and I still love it now. Unfortunately, lugging such gear around is not so attractive these days. I'm going on a bit here - back to topic - I'd really spend some time trialling the combinations, and in the types of situations that you're going to be using them (if that's at all possible). My personal preference would be to go down the Agi route - SL or DB 112s or 210s (with whatever Agi head suits you and your budget)
  24. Utterly devastating news - a mad and beautiful force of nature
  25. Wow, extremely versatile and very solid amps - looks like an absolute bargain!
