1.
My first ever bass was a VOX Clubman. I'm sure whatever you fit will be amazingly better than the original pups. You would struggle to find anything as bad as the originals. That's to say "bad" = awful. Not to be confused with "bad" = wicked. Good luck Cheers Rich
I think you're right about the sound of guitar pickups v the original VOX ones. I have both VOX Clubman and VOX Bassmaster and they share similar pickups.
 2.
Broncos use them. They sound kinda weedy though.
Yes i thought they would be pretty weak but can't see that the original VOX ones had a lot of oomph.
 3. I have an old VOX Clubman Bass that needs a new bridge pickup which was missing when i bought it. Replacements are hard to find and when you do they are crazy prices so i plan to replace both pickups. The only pickups that i've seen which look anything like them are from guitars. Would it be o.k. to fit guitars pickups?
 4. Thanks to everyone for their input. I have various strings now ordered so will report back on how my little strings experiment goes.
 5.
something about them getting a shipment in anyway as they ordered it in before
That's good. I hope you do get it soon as i can imagine you're gonna have some fun with it.
 6.
And here's my best mate
That's what friends are for.
 7.
Here's that 1972 line-up but with only Roy Estrada on bass and Mark Boston playing a third guitar.
Thanks for that. Nice quality too. That was a real reminder to me that in the 1970s Captain Beefheart LPs stood next to Funkadelic LPs in my record collection but you seldom read about them both in the same magazines. The NME and Melody Maker crossed over musically but i always think that so many Beefheart fans never heard of Funkadelic (although many did of course) and vice versa which is a shame because i don't think they were that far apart in so many ways.
 8.
I've never noticed the bass in Beefheart - only the guitars and drums.
http://youtu.be/gKsC-tUdPmc
 9.
Is it time for me to trot out my 'I met Rockette Morton' story again? No, anyone who hasn't heard it before can do a search for it, lol
Sounds like a great story but did he tell you how Jerry Handley got that fuzz bass sound?
 10.
Have you thought about trying a Stingray to reproduce it ?
No, but if Stingrays were around then it would of course sound so much better............
 11. I ordered a Candy Apple Red Pawnshop Bass VI in February from my local Fender dealer as i was told they were in stock at Fender UK. A few days later i was told that it wasn't in stock but would be delivered in 6 weeks time. I cancelled my order and phoned up a few more UK Fender dealers and was told they were out of stock at Fender and would be available from anything from between June and November! I phoned a few Fender dealers until finally Coda had one in stock which i received within 2 days.
 12. I've always loved the good Captain's 1960s version of 'Diddy Wah Diddy' and especially the bass sound on it by Jerry Handley(?). Anyone know what effects he was using on this classic? http://youtu.be/yXXFj5wzLFA
 13. That one appeared on ebay a couple of months ago. This one was on ebay last year..... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-Jazz-Bass-Mark-King-No-24-of-42-/321171114196
 14. I use Grado SR80s for both Bass and Hi-Fi but if i was using them for Bass only i'd go for the PJB H-850s as they seem to get good reviews. If you do get them i'd be interested in how you get on with them.
 15.
Makes me want to form a Spinal Tap tribute act and buy this specifically to perform 'Big Bottom'.
This makes me want to be in Spinal Tap. http://youtu.be/RZkyw-r34HA
 16.
Ha! Ha! Authentic Bulls**t Guitars more like! Thanks for posting had a good laugh at this one
I thought you might like it. P.S. I too marvelled it's plywood body when i bought one of these.
 17. I only think a photo of a Bass is complete if there is a pair of old socks, a settee and the owners cat in it.
 18.
Would they be better value than a mim or squier?
That depends on what you consider 'value'. If you want something that may gain a little in value over the next ten years or so then a Columbus could be what you are looking for but if you want a decent quality bass to use and gig then it's got to be a MIM or Squier.
 19. I've taken lots of guitars and basses apart (and even re-assembled a few ) but all i've ever found (apart from someones initials) is a WW2 model aircraft sticker under a bridge cover of a 60s Japanese bass and 'kilroy woz ere' under a pickguard of an old Burns bass. The search continues.........................
 20.
Actually Danelectro basses ad their own guage running 44-79. You can still get them from LaBella (flat wound set I believe 760 FD) or you can order D'Addario XL 155 (Jerry Jones set) for six string bass and only use the bottom 4. D'Addario six string bass sets for vintage run about $10 USD so not using high b and high e doesn't matter. I am not sure what vintage British basses used but that is what you got in the US.
Thanks Musky & TomRichards for the info. I've just measured my VOX Bassmaster neck at the nut and it's 34mm and is really skinny. Great idea about the Jerry Jones set Tom and i think i'll check out the LaBellas first.
 21.
Our German "friend" Music Outlet Shop. Full of over-priced crap. Does he ever sell any of the instruments he has advertised? IMO we should put a ban on mentioning any of his eBay listings here. The idiot doesn't deserve even the publicity of ridicule.
It makes my own '60s Semi Beat Bass' a bit of a bargain.
 22. I just knew that that bass would haver some admirers on here................. There's also in interesting bass from the same seller under the title '60's SEMI BEAT BASS'

 24.
Yeah, lovely stuff. I'm just discovering them, after BetaFunk posted a clip from their 73 broadcast for German TV over the Bass VI thread. Got the Cuneiform CD/DVD of it today & it's top stuff! Its a post KA line up with Roy Babbington on Bass VI.
I'm really pleased that you liked it mickster. You've made an old geezer very happy!
