1.
Yup, definitely Hugh Hopper - I think the late Kevin Ayers left after the first album. There's a great French TV performance of the Wyatt/Ayers/Ratledge line up on Vimeo here:
Hugh Hopper was one of my favourite bass players and i was fortunately to see him live more than a few times. One of the greats.
 2.
Have you tried Brandoni?
Thanks BRX. Yes i have looked at their website but can't see anything but i think they may well have them or something like it. I don't live that far from them so may give them a call.
 3.
In fact, if it does anything it will publish the name ... in an "any publicity is good publicity" kinda way.
I've always put that quote alongside the Bill Shankly 'Life and Death' quote as firmly tongue in cheek and certainly not to be taken literally.
 4. I'm trying to find some white plastic tuner buttons for my VOX Bassmaster. I realise they are going to be new replacements rather than the real thing but does anyone know who may sell these?
 5. I have a few 1960s Short Scale British Basses. A couple have really skinny necks and i was wondering what gauge strings these would have had on them in the 60s and what would be the equivalent today? I realise that a lot of this depended on what was available and what was the fashion at the time but (i presume) a lot of the basses of that era were made for guitarists who converted to bass playing were the strings lighter gauge than most players prefer nowadays?
 6. This is one of my favourite youtube videos. I'm sure any BCers with a liking for these things will love this. Enjoy!
 7.
The Badass II IS a direct Fender replacement and requires no drilling of you're replacing a standard Fender bridge. The Fender Deluxe bridge however is not a direct replacement for the regular Fender bridges. If you were to remove the Badass, you'll find no additional screwholes. The cover won't fit over the Badass II
I was querying your point over the bridge looking tiny. The Badass II in no way looks tiny so i presumed you were talking about the bridge that the cover fits over. Therefore you aren't going to see the bridge so it won't matter if it looks tiny.
 8. I have something with a similar pickguard. It's short scale with a sloping neck PU. I'd love to know what it is!
 9.
Never heard of such a thing, and I don't need to use it because I just stick them on my watch list!!!! After all it is called a "watch list" not an "I intend to bid list".
You may not have heard of it but it's another useful tool in the wonderful world of ebay that's worth using.
 10.
Into covers bands being banned then?
11.
I do this, especially with something I'm in two minds about. Sellers sometimes reduce their 'fixed' price, which may move something from a 'might buy' to 'will buy' status for me. Doesn't seem like a dumb thing to me.
I also do this. A guitar i rather fancied a couple of years ago was listed at £500 didn't sell and went down £50 every time it was relisted until it reached the sort of price i thought was too good to miss. So yes it is worth doing!
 12.
I was once bidding for a DJ mixer, I put a bid in for £70 which was more than fair, it ended up selling for £120. you could but it from turnkey £135 delivered brand new......?!? I stopped bidding for items after that.
I was watching a used bass recently and it ended going for £40 (+ £20 postage) more than you could buy a new one new at numerous UK retailers post free! I can only think that some people get carried away with the bidding process.
 13.
On another note, I am having trouble with an eBay troll who bids on items, wins them and never pays. Her feedback text is AWFUL but percentage still 100% of course, eBay do nothing despite multiple sellers reporting her
You can block any bidder.
 14.
So, I'm selling some stuff on eBay at the moment and it got me to thinking. I have something worth about £200 on £3.04 at the moment. Which means that someone has actually made a bid of £3.03. So someone's made a realistic bid of say £100 (I dunno, whatever) and the next highest bid is £3.03. Why bother? Do people honestly believe they'll win it? Or is there just loads of people out there that just bid on everything just for the perverse satisfaction of losing everytime? I don't understand! Whenever I've bid on something on eBay I've made a realistic offer (ie, as much as I think the item's worth) and left it at that. I don't think to myself "hmmm, a solid bid of 2p will win me this item." Weird. Truckstop
I know a dealer that puts in hundreds of low bids on items and ends up getting more than a few bargains which he then sells on. I bid on a a book a few years ago for £100 which i didn't win. The next one that came up a few months later i bid £120 and still was outbid. About six months later i bid £120 and won it for £7.50. It's simply all down to who wants to bid for it and sometimes you get a bargain.
 15.
Maybe it's my old eyes but, in photo 1, are the strings and the neck running parrallel? Track the E string along the neck, with reference to the neck edge.

Going by the third photo, not only does the E string get to the edge of the fretboard but also the G string seems to be closer to the edge than advisable. Could it be a replacement bridge with too-wide string spacing? One BBOT looks much the same as another.
I'd still give it a spin for £80 if it was nearer to me.
 16. I always wanted a 4001 or 4003 and promised myself one last year but i wouldn't buy one even if they were the last basses on earth. On the other hand i do like my old Shaftesbury.
 17. Gianfranco Zola signed the wall in the bar down at my local football club. They put a frame around it.
 18. The paragraph re the Shaftesbury 3261 is interesting... http://shaftesburyguitars.wordpress.com/category/rose-morris/
 19.
Not even a mention so far..........
The second post in this thread linked this............... http://news.bbc.co.u...ent/2995901.stm ...........and straight in at number 10 is..........
 20. Worth a punt if you're near Bexleyheath http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-60-70sCMI-BASS-GUITAR-/370813514672?clk_rvr_id=481965891467&vectorid=229508

 22.
Cheers for the info guys! I love that style of bass playing. Very similar to some of the Scott Walker stuff. For example:
The bass playing stands out all through 'Scott 4'. I've never found out who played bass on the session even though the question crops up now and then on both Scott Walker and Bass forums and even long before the internet. Because Scott played bass it's often said that he played on it but the way that recording worked in those days i would doubt it. I would have thought he was too busy with his singing and composing duties. Wally Stott orchestrated Scott 4 and there have been various names of session mentioned over the years.
 23.
Nice bag, any pics of the instrument please?
I have repeatedly put photos up but they seem to disappear. I have just put yet another photo up.
