I knew that there would be nothing...........................but praise for the Pre-Fab Four. I'm so glad that they decide to[sub] [/sub][s]share[/s] no, to give the gift of their music to us for without them there would be no music. No birds singing and pianos just sitting there unplayed with their keyboards just looking like black and white striped shelves. Although i'm sure that there is some sort of debate we could have about records sold and their far reaching musically influences the fact is that The Rutles were great because i said so and musically superior because i said so. How could such a group be over rated? P.S. Please see 'The Beatles' thread for the 'because i said so' bit
they revolutionised trousers. you could see, well....everything
You are correct. The Rutles were fashion icons. No Rutles. No Trousers.

As it's 38 years (probably next Tuesday) since the Pre-Fab Four first appeared on TV what do fellow BCers think of the way they changed music and are they over rated. Personally i think that the song 'Joe Public' brought to the attention of a wide public sampling and was also a seminal piece in forming electronic music into how we know it today. For me, without The Rutles we would all be wandering the streets crying 'Where is the music?'

Here's some of my experiences on the bay............ I won an auction for a motorcycle and the seller emailed me to say the they thought the bike was worth more than what i'd won it for so would think about over the weekend and decide whether to let me have it!!! I sold something only for the winner to tell me "i bought one of these at the weekend so don't want yours now. Thanks". This has happened more than once. "My boyfriend bought the bike but doesn't want it now. Can we cancel this?' "I never thought this was going to go for as much as this. I didn't want to pay that much" from winning bidder. My reply was "why did you bid that much then?" There are loads more like this. Fortunately most things go smoothly.

Very interesting what you've done to your Pilot. If it works for you and does the job then that's excellent and worth the trouble. I have a 1984 Guild Pilot and although i have more expensive basses it is probably the nicest to play. They are still amazing value for money.

It's worth a search on the net for Shaftesbury Ned Callan Peter Cook Nobbly Ned Shergold for more info on these
Ah, oops. It was a late finish gig and I'm going to blame tiredness
No worries. I was just listing Fretless players i could remember from the days before Jaco really made the instrument a different animal.
-
Other players not already mentioned (that I can see that is) Pino Palladino John Giblin Mick Khan
The list was of Fretless players in groups before the Jaco phenomenon.
Can you name them please, I'd really like to check them out. Thanks, Steve.
John Paul Jones Paul Simonon Geddy Lee Boz Burrell Rick Grech (Family) Mo Foster Stanley Shelton (Peter Frampton) Patrick O'Hearn (Frank Zappa) Bill Wyman Jack Bruce Larry Klein Rick Laird That's a few off the top of my head but there are many more that played fretless in rock.
No, quite right it's not a competition. But your comments on the Beatles having no influence on electronic music are false, TNK is sampling, and as I'm sure you are aware sampling has everything do do with electronic music. It's been cited continuously as a seminal track in this respect, a precursor. Never mind... there have been some stupid theads round here recently.
What i was getting at is that yes TNK is sampling but there are many (better) examples of sampling long before TNK. Listen to Spike Jones in the 50s. Here was a middle of the road entertainer that used samples. Not so cutting edge as we thought in the 60s then. TNK is just one small piece of the jigsaw. Maybe it's more important to you for some reason but it's a small part. Have a listen to any Raymond Scott recordings or Fontana Mix by John Cage, anything by Luciano Berio and you'll maybe have a better understanding of the music you obviously have a passion for. I've always kept my ears open to new music whether that's by actually listening or by listening to those with a greater understanding than me. As i said before, just enjoy the music.
What?? Sampling has no effect on electronic music? Oh dear mate. Google what DJ Spooky said about TNK. Go and listen to the Chemical Brothers. Read an interview with the Boards of Canada and read about their influences after Music Has the Right To Children, widely believed to be one of the best electronic albums of all time. Rarely do I say this on this forum but you're just wrong.
I'm not sure who you think said that sampling has no effect on electronic music so not sure what you are on about there. Yes i'm familiar with Boards Of Canada. Twoism was much sought after until it was commercially released and still is a classic in my opinion. I was buying Thomas Leer and Robert Rental (go and google them) recordings in the 70s when they were issuing them privately so have an interest in electronic music but wouldn't tell anyone that i'm an expert. Although i do admit i know a lot more than some. It isn't a competition on who's right and who's wrong. Just enjoy the music.
Meanwhile, whoever you like as a bassplayer was influenced by Paul. How ironic.
...or maybe not.
How can anyone sensibly claim that anyone or anything as globally popular as The Beatles are over-rated? Over-rated against what? Their own personal dislike? To claim that something is over-rated because of a personal dislike is clearly nonsense. Dislike The Beatles, Microsoft, Tesco [enter own hobby-horse here] by all means, but don't make yourself look stupid by saying they are over rated.
I think one poster in this thread said they thought the Beatles were overrated. Most posts have been about what (if any) influence or how much influence they had over music.
-
I'll leave the first and last of the genres you chose to mention as I could list a number of examples to the contrary, but are you honestly going to try and claim that 'Tomorrow Never Knows' had no influence on electronic music? Have you ever even heard 'Tomorrow Never Knows' before? Once again I think there are more than a few people on here trying to claim knowledge over subjects of which they have none.
Yes and yes. I heard all of Revolver the week it was released so yes i am familiar with the song. I think the Beatles were a massive influence on a lot of people and groups but fail to see that Tomorrow Never Knows had much influence on electronic music. Surely it's the other way around.
Tut, tut, you're guessing, never pays to guess. Although I do hear that Mozart is massively influential in both the reggae and the roots/americana scenes
I don't think it's that much of a guess to think that as many people have listened to Mozart as The Beatles. Music by Mozart is around us all the time.........and his music has been around a lot longer.
Oooooh... you cut me to the quick!
I'm serious Steve. Although i do realise that The Fab Four were massively influential to pop music and for Woolworths shifting all those Top Twenty guitars in the 60s
However, his audience has been tiny compared to the audience of The Beatles.
I would have thought that Mozart has been listened to by as many people as the Beatles.
-
Whether you like The Beatles or not, the simple fact is that Lennon & McCartney wrote songs covered by more artists than any other writers. Songs that have been covered by artists in: Jazz, Rock, Folk, Classical, Pop, Country, Reggae... in fact, you name the genre, and you can bet a 'superstar' of that genre will have done a Beatles song. There's no law that says that you have to like The Beatles, but... over-rated?... my ar*e!
Give me The Rubettes any day
-
???That makes no sesne. Are you being obtuse on purpose?
No not deliberately. This has been a fun topic. It shows how passionate about music we all feel and we're never always going to agree. The Mozart thing was just thrown in because he really was a genius. I don't think anyone can compare with his genius and the influence he had on music.

I'm not a great fan of the Fab Four despite joining the screaming hoards (i wasn't screaming by the way) that used to swamp Twickenham Film Studios when they were filming there in the 60s. Also saw Ringo filming in the Turk's Head in Twickers and still having a collection all those 60s bubble gums cards. Despite all this.........This Is How They Always Sound....................To Me http://youtu.be/trNOw9XMV8s
