1. I think this interview with Pat Metheny is really interesting. This is obviously not unique to the Bright Size Life LP but is often the story of numerous albums. Many of what we think of as 'classics' now weren't viewed that way on their release. I actually remember when BSL was released and some of the reviews it got. Metheny was stuck in the middle of 'real jazz' and 'fusion' and hid didn't fit easily into either camp. Most reviews i read at the time just thought it was 'nice' at best. That's all. No great fanfare for Jaco either (that came later). The album now has become a classic. http://youtu.be/rzgY6udpsRg
 2.
The criteria.
That's a great name for a band.
 3.
I'm thinking boutique vibe, so maybe moving away from the Jazz bass side of things!
Expect lots of suggestions of the Jazz Bass kind.
 4. Just use your own judgement. That's why i've picked up some cracking 70s, 80s & 90s basses at bargain prices because they aren't fashionable and therefore don't get talked about in glowing terms. I just hope all the experts continue to keep away from these gems.
 5.
I bought a couple of those cheapy Ritter ones recently and, for the money, they're ok. I paid about £12 each from an eBay oik.
Thanks. Are the Ritter bags padded?
 6. I need to buy a few Bass Guitar Gig Bags. Anyone know of any reasonable padded ones that aren't too expensive? I really don't want to spend more than £15 for each for them but just need them to be padded so they can be transported in the back of my car. Cheers for any help.
 7.
Where do you get strings for it?
I think the strings are Rotosound so they are easily available. I'm can't remember what gauge they are but i'm sure they are just short scale light gauge strings cut down to fit.
 8. Wonderful. Just wonderful. http://youtu.be/KS6UJgdEDjs
 9. It wasn't meant as hostile at all, just an explanation of why it was on my avatar.
 10.
err but you've had that avatar for ages? Im getting well mixed up here, I thought today was NBD wheres me tablets??
I'm not sure what you class as ages because but that's up to you but i'll let you into a little secret. Here goes: 1. Decide to buy bass 2. Get photo of bass 3. Put photo of bass as avatar 4. Buy bass from supplier 5. Put N(Piccolo)BD on BC and wonder why on earth i bothered I actually bought a bass yesterday as well but suppose that under the rules it would have to be NBY (New Bass Yesterday) so really can't be bothered.
 11.
Is that not a similar bass in your avatar?
It's the same bass.
 12.
Is the bass in your avatar not yours then?
???
 13.
Wow. Can those of us not in the know have some more info?
Sorry, of course. It's a 'Boomslang Liberator Nano' bass (piccolo tuned). The scale is 22.5 and it has 24 frets. It was designed by Mark Ramsay of Ramsay Musical Instruments.
 14. New Piccolo Bass Day!
 15. Probably my favourite fretless player..... http://youtu.be/TGBzS9coFCg
 16.
The Stranglers take on Walk on By is one of my personal favourites
I much prefer Lou Johnson's version but that's probably because i think that Johnson was the best interpreter of Bacharach and David songs. One thing is for sure. This must be the best version of Rappers Delight.
 17. I've always liked Gino and have all of his 70s and 80s albums and most of the later ones. Check out his early stuff with Jimmy Haslip on bass. http://youtu.be/QtggRNnA4VM
 18.
I forgot Bob Babbitt! How could you possibly forget Bob Babbitt. Seems like everybody else did too!
Not forgotten, just didn't make anyone's top ten. For me Babbitt was up there with the very best and an equal of James Jamerson and Carol Kaye as far as those Motown records go but never seems to get the plaudits the other two do. Although an saying that James Jamerson is probably more famous now than when he was alive.
 19.
It is the same when one drills down to specific composers. For example, The London Mozart Players have been around since the fifties.
The London Mozart Players do not only play music composed by Mozart. Once i saw them play two pieces by Beethoven (no Mozart) and another time works by Rossini, Schubert & Mozart.
 20.
And the Rutles before them, although they were a parody more than a tribute, and have now had their own tribute band!
I've just looked on t'internet and it seems that there are SIX Rutles tribute bands!!!
 21.
And the Rutles before them, although they were a parody more than a tribute, and have now had their own tribute band!
You mean the whole Rutles / Prefab Four thing was a spoof? Not to worry i still think Cheese & Onion is the greatest slice of pop ever.
 22.
I think the Australians started it with Bjorn again and the pink floyd one whose name escapes me.
The Bootleg Beatles were going for many years before either of those started. Nearly a decade before if i'm not mistaken.
 23. I liked him when he was with The Yardbirds and the JBG Truth LP is great but not all that twiddly diddly stuff later. Not for me thanks.
 24.
... or the Xenakis!
25.
Most of the time it gets to be slightly too half-arsed, and even tacky. Just look at their digital watches and their modern sets of glasses if you can't be arsed to have a stern look at heir facial expressions.
I'm looking forward to the day when at the next concert i attend of works by say Stockhausen, Xenakis or Penderecki the orchestra will be togged out in period bri-nylon shirts, terylene trousers and slip-on shoes. Mind you the audience might not noticed all the crackling of all that static during the Stockhausen pieces.
