1.
Theres some lovely attitudes in this thread, Im so glad to be a bass player
The lovely attitudes are usually the ones i like.............a bit like good and bad music.
 2. A classic album that no self respecting jazz-funkateer would have been without in 1981.
 3.
The diabolically massive hits you mean? Always the problem. Stay musically interesting and play to small crowds of musos or 'churn out' stuff that sells millions of albums that actually allows you to keep making albums at all. A moral dilemma indeed.
.....or you could always play something that was musically interesting to massive crowds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWKtVzzWo4U
 4.
slightly off thread I'm afraid, but when do people think something truly original came along, can't stand it, but Rap was original, Chuck Berry? Jimi Hendrix? perhaps Black Sabbath? the Beatles and the Stones certainly weren't, most successfully musicians were just good at reinventing the wheel
That's interesting but what Rap or Rappers would you say were the originals?
 5.
Not to mention Ska + Reggae of course... Then there's the big band stuff Oh, there's also the sax in the Dave Brubeck band And the backing sections for a whole range of 50's stuff and and
50s stuff? Sounds absolutely fascinating. Tell us more.
 6.
I think the general consensus on the forum would be that "Bad Music" is what other people listen to....
Yes that did cross my mind..............
 7. I won't be able to sleep tonight until someone unlocks the mystery of what is good music and what is bad music.
 8.
You'd need to ask Duke Ellington. The 'good/bad music' quote was his, not mine.
I've never seen or heard that quote but i have heard this quote attributed to Duke Ellington There are two kinds of music. Good music, and the other kind.
 9. Perhaps someone could make a list of 'good music' and 'bad music' just so we all know.
 10.
If you can't tell the difference good and bad then it makes no difference whether it's so-called original, covers, tribute or whatever.
Not sure what's that's got to do with my post but thanks anyway.
 11.
From me personally it's certainly not hate, it's just something I have no interest in.
That's the way i feel too. No hate on my part just absolutely no interest in it.
 12.
There are only 2 types of music. Good music and bad music. Ditto bands.
Which is the 'good music' and which is the 'bad music'?
 13. For Trumpet fans only...... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBogxn5ObgA
 14. Just been reminded in the Peter Cetera thread of how good Chicago were for those short few years in the late 60s / early 70s. Blood Sweat & Tears were up there with them but there were also a few great bands around like Chase (led by trumpeter Bill Chase), Dreams (Randy Brecker was also in BS&T), Tower Of Power and of course Electric Flag. I miss those horn sections! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=se6IGAwq8YI&list=ALNb4maWNoT6S05aCIB2pi8J57TyXQbi5I&index=4
 15.
sorry Geoff. i edited my post.
No need to Andrew. I think that it's because i heard all this stuff when it was 'new' and there's probably a little bit of nostalgia is involved!!! The bass playing on those first two Chicago albums is great but very much of it's time. A time when whatever electric bass you played was usually listed as 'Fender Bass'.
 16. The first two Chicago Transit Authority albums are great. A super tight band with great tunes and nothing like the later aor/pop albums they churned out. https://www.youtube....h?v=XI5aD6m7ub0 Just listen to those horns at 1.15 onwards.........!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uy0ldI_1HA
 17.
great record, but is it just me thinking there is nothing astounding about his playing on this particular record. ?
I think that's exactly the point for me Andrew. He's just doing what a bass player is supposed to do and doing it superbly. What was that old saying about less is more? P.S. I was referring to 'I'm a Man' and NOT 'If You Leave Me Now' which i loathe!
 18.
I'd rather stay in and listen to a CD by the original artist than go to see a tribute band doing the same songs.
I'd rather listen to someone standing on a street corner playing the kazoo rather than any tribute band. I just don't get the whole tribute band thing at all.
 19.
Imagine the ticket prices if The Beatles had ever got together . . . Makes the bootleg Beatles a total bargain.
Yeah but if you were around in 1962-64 tickets for The Beatles shows were about 10/6 (or just over 50p) for the best seats in the house and you got about another 8 groups thrown in as well.
 20.
Each to their own. I'd rather go and see an original band I haven't heard before.
+1
 21.
One of the best tribute bands I have ever seen were the Bootleg Beatles. They had it all down to a T. Even the costume changes from the Please Please Me period up to the Abbey Road era.
I saw the Bootleg Beatles over 25 years ago and thought they were excellent. On saying that i have no interest at all in seeing any other tribute bands but guess i was lucky enough to be around at a time to see all the original bands i ever wanted to see.
 22.
Simple supply and demand. No more or less stupid than the Akai / Klon pedal prices.
+1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvsQjprz1x4
 23. I remember many years ago a fretless Travis Bean hanging up in my local music shop for a couple of years without anyone buying it. It was a great bass but was just waiting for that thing that would sell it. As the Dame once sang................Fashion.
 24.
I used to be in a band with a guitarist known as Andy Piles, because his name was Andy & he suffered terribly with his chalfonts. I hadn't thought about him for donkeys years before I saw the title of this thread...
I thought you were going to say he was called 'andy cos he lived just around the corner.
 25. I always liked his bass playing. No idea whether it's plugged in but here he is on a Fender Bass VI. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1W1JkPKfWQ
