1.
I love Peaches en Regalia and it's still remarkable to me that Shuggie Otis was about 16 when it was was recorded.
Obviously no one was as impressed as i was at Shuggie's bass playing.
 2.
£305 it cost me! and nope cracking bass - I'm really enjoying playing it at the mo.
A great price for a fine bass but not really in the 'stupidly low bids' category.
 3.
New to me but nice bits of timber (and very cheap) http://www.ebay.co.u...331063436236%26
Like every other auction we'll know whether it was cheap after the auction has ended.
 4.
i am sure once you start getting into 60 and 70s basses there must be a fair few rare ones in the uk, but what about 80 90 2000 ones ?? by the big manufacturers ( mass produced) future classics ?
It's amazing how some threads wander far away from the original post.
 5.
There must to be more to it though than just taking a typical electric guitar solo and transposing it to a bass. I mean I wouldnt play Stairway To Heaven on a bass and think it was a perfect way to show off that particular instrument.
I can barely stand listening to it on guitar.........
 6.
It's only when I see some very good youtube bass covers that I realize how complicate were some of Zappa's songs
I love Peaches en Regalia and it's still remarkable to me that Shuggie Otis was about 16 when it was was recorded.
 7.
I saw a great bass for an unbelievable price
You said it.
 8.
There was Elvis though.
....and Bill Haley. Forget that then. Perhaps i was looking back through rose coloured glasses.
 9.
But it's all swings and roundabouts. Do people really think it would be a good thing to go back to the 1950s?
Oh i don't know, it wasn't that bad. o.k. there was rationing but there was full employment, the Teddy Boys were entertaining and there was no Beatles.
 10.
there is a multi-fold problem in this debate. pubco's take the piss out of their tenants in terms of beer prices (being forced to buy overpriced beers from their limited list). successive govt's have increased duty on beer more sharply than that on wine and spirits (i wonder why ? ;-) ) supermarkets have been allowed to discount alcohol as a 'loss-leader' (i wonder why ? :-( ) jesus, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to draw any conclusions.
Oh well, that's that sorted then.
 11.
It is definately more expensive.
I don't think it is. When i started drinking it was one pound and ten pence a pint and everyone moaned and groaned that when it went up to two shillings they would all give up drinking. Needless to say none of them did. It's the same story with petrol.
 12.
2 Reasons this has happened most full on pub heads smoke. And it is just so expensive now to drink in a pub.
I doubt if it's any more expensive to drink in a pub than it was 40 years ago. It's just that there are now so many outlets for cheap booze.
 13.
If you like Mingus then The Complete Village Vanguard Recordings 1961 by the Bill Evans Trio is a winner. Scott Lafaro on upright bass, bringing it. Massively.
The Bill Evans Village Vanguard Recordings are great but apart from both playing upright bass i can't think of two totally different players than LaFaro and Mingus. I'm not convinced that if you like one of them you're necessarily going to like the other as the music they played and their playing styles are so different.
 14.
I'd imagine the smoking ban and cheap off-licence booze haven't been very helpful either.
I agree about the smoking ban. For years i went regularly to my local pub specially in the summer when it was a joy to sit outside and have a couple of pints. Since the smoking ban it has ruined that pleasure as the air is full of smoke and you can't move for smokers milling around. I've been there twice since the ban.
 15. This book was published in 1973.... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Death-English-Pub-Christopher-Hutt/dp/0099080206/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1384164600&sr=1-1&keywords=death+of+the+english+pub If it wasn't for CAMRA and the many small independent breweries there would be even less pubs around today.
 16.
'Tis the season to make that list. Since I'm a sucker for CD box sets as well as groovy basslines, I was thinking of getting a few wishes dotted down on the dreaded annual wish list. So far i have only found a Jaco Pastorius 2CD, a Maurcus Miller 5CD collection and a Charles Mingus box. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated
Mingus on Electric Bass? Now there's a thought.
 17. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XB76Oud9vJI Ex-Headhunter Eddie Henderson with a great line-up
 18. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZE8dp-107U It's worth sticking with this as it turns into something very much like The Headhunters were doing in the 70s.
 19.
Another early favourite: Mike Stern 'Goodbye Again'
I bought this vinyl LP on it's release in 1986 and it's still one of my favourite albums. I don't think that Mike Stern has ever bettered it plus you get the bonus of Jaco on one track.
 20.
Can we just lose the 'this is the first time I've ever heard them' and how it's 'dull and boring' stuff please! This video is hardly blummin' representative of their body of work!! P
But this was the first time i've ever heard them and it was dull and boring.
 21. That's entertainment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 22. I've never heard anything by this group but the only thing that surprised me is that it is so dull and boring. They sound just like any other band nowadays and would have had a job getting a gig in a pub in London in the mid 70s.
 23.
28000 members and not one turned up.
If it was a gig with an Arctic Monkeys or The Killers tribute band you'd probably wouldn't have been able to move for basses.
