1.
Reel it in guys. Swallow is a master musician who cannot be easily defined by one track. Try Shoe Dog, Alfie or Away, 3 tracks he has done with John Scofield. The secret is not to be able PLAY the solos but to be able to CONCEIVE them. There are few as musical as Good Citizen Swallow.
I've seen him live with Gary Burton, Paul Motian, Carla Bley & The Jazz Composers Orchestra and have always been impressed with his playing.
 2.
Okay, I'll say it. It's very nice. But nothing extraordinary. There are thousands of bassist who could play and solo as well and probably about three million guitarists. That's not to say it doesn't have merit. But I just don't hear the spectacular-ness. Or the jazz.
I was simply answering a request from someone who asked whether anyone could recommend any Steve Swallow recordings. I really couldn't care less what you think at all.
 3. As you say wow! When i looked at them they were at £366.............not bad as they started at 99p!!!
 4.
So... you want to sell it, then??
I'm having a good sort out of a few guitars and basses but that isn't one of them i'm afraid! The Shergold Masquerader is going though.
 5.
Loving the Marathon. From that pic it looks in good condition, too.
Thanks. Yes it is in very good condition. It has the usual Shergold cracked lacquer look but hardly any dings at all plus it has it's original bridge cover.
 6.
More pics, please!
Here's a pic of my Masquerader & Marathon together. I'm actually going to put the Masquerader in the BC classifieds this week.
 7. My 1979 Marathon doesn't have string trees.
 8. My 1976 Masquerader doesn't have string trees.
 9. A this really is good for metal type bump.............
 10.
Interesting range of prices there from $39 to $65!!!!!!! I know CC Music in Glasgow can get LaBella strings, but they *are* pricey. If I were you, I'd hold on a few days as I found a link that has me pursuing a UK source of both rounds & flats. I'll know more middle of next week. G.
Yes they are pricey! Thanks for that i look forward to see what you come up with re the strings.
 11.
Finally got to have a fiddle with it at 8pm last night.. a bit late for using an amp (for the neighbours, not me), but really pleased with it so far.
Have you joined the 'Bass VI Players' Facebook page yet? Loads of interesting tips and info for all things Bass VI on there!
 12.
Anybody recommend any good Steve Swallow recordings ?
Any of his recordings as a leader or with Gary Burton or Carla Bley are worth investigating. Probably a good place to start is with the 1960s Gary Burton Quartet LP 'Lofty Fake Anagram' or the 1970s Burton/Swallow duo LP 'Hello Hotel' on ECM and his duos with Carla Bley................... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkBU5aM_6zM
 13.
Which strings? The general opinion on various forums (Fora?) is that the Bass VI doesn't really work with the originally supplied strings - a .85 E simply is too floppy. Many are saying that you need at least a .95 and many are raving about the LaBella set with a .106 E. As I'd want to use it primarily as a bass, I'd be wanting to put a set of flats on it, so, which sets are available for the Bass VI?
I'm going for this set on my Pawn Shop Bass VI but LaBella also make custom sets for the Bass VI. http://www.labella.com/products/767-6f/
 14.
jazz on Radio 3. I keep trying, but I still don't get it
Keep trying and a whole new world of music will open up for you.
 15. This bloke's not too bad......... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4MK7TNDmDw
 16. Mr Rollins and Electric Bass........ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niLEJhpQ59s
 17. Steve Swallow is a great example that it can work but i reckon Swallow is an amazing player and so different to any other bass player i've ever seen. Sonny Rollins often had an electric bass player with him in the 70s, 80s & 90s as did Jackie McLean and Gil Evans used an electric bass in his band from the 70s. Here in the UK i've seen electric bass players like Laurence Cottle plus a few others pull it off in a jazz setting rather than a fusion one but i think you're right, it rarely works. I often wonder if it's because electric bass players play like electric bass players (if that makes sense) and not like acoustic (upright) players. I'm only guessing this as i'm more of a bass enthusiast rather than a player but i bet that someone like Ron Carter would fit in on electric bass in a jazz setting.
 18.
Hey guys, I just would like some information on this bass, mostly how much its worth. Thanks!
Whatever someone is going to give you for it but if you want an approximate price just do an internet search.
 19. Here we go again (until it's pulled of course). http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-1966-FENDER-JAZZ-BASS-J-BASS-ELECTRIC-GUITAR-/261290442937?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item3cd61fc0b9 There isn't a week goes past without the 99p start for a Fender Jazz Bass!
 20.
Because all Westones do go for very little, these days ! They are all hugely undervalued IMO. The fact that you can buy a used THunder 1A for the same price as a used Squier Affinity is just laughable IMO. The quality is in different universes. And, yes, your point is still valid, I do not know this seller's reserve but my guess is that it's not exactly a fortune.
Thanks. Yes i see what you mean. You could well be right when i looked at some on gumtree.
 21.
Heads up. This will go for a pittance !
There's a reserve on this so unless you know what the reserve how do you know it will go for a pittance?
 22.
I might sell my Squier - I simply don't find it as playable as the Fender. The shop will take it back (of course), but I'd rather give Basschatters first dibs as it'd be going back into stock at the shop shortly if I don't. PM me if interested.
I'll do you favour and take it off your hands for 50 quid.
 23.
Hi Just started to play the double bass and bought a beginners bass from Thomann. The bass started to delaminate, but Thomann were great – no quibble refund. But where do I go from here. Chance another Thomann or wait for who knows how long for a second hand bass. Any comments on beginners basses would be useful. Based in UK
Try posting this in the 'EUB & Double Basses' section where it's more likely to be seen by those who may be able to help you.
