I mean the top horn sort of gracefully falls away into the neck, wheras something like thsi is a really large 'bump' which looks kind of odd in my opinion: See what I mean? Not really a fan of single cuts anyway to be honest (or Foderas, only having played 2)
Beauty! Im sure Ive seen that model before, who's she made by?

Are the pickup bobins actually glued in to the cases? If they're not then maybe the whole bobin has slipped down on one side and just needs to be pushed back in to the case. Ive been meaning to get some foam pads to put under my pickup to avoid that happening.
I didn't say it wouldn't be zingy, just that it would be a little less zingy than with a standard-wound pickup. My experience backs that up.
Ive not tried any other pickup in the P, so Im willing to accept that the Thumper does naturally have less top. It does however suit my bass very well and Im pleased with the tone I get through my Hartke. But thats got me thinking - it would be intersting to experiment with other pickups in that bass.
Ha, cheers. Well I do all this at work where I have quite extensive facilities and solid surfaces to work on, so it doesn't really take long to get stuff done. If I do the individual brigde pockets then I will do it on a metal work mill, pick up the center of the width and just work from there - no marking out or jig needed, just using the readings on machine. If i were to build a jig I would do much the same, but into a piece of ply wood... you were trying to position individual saddels for a fanned fret build - i think i would have just planned it out on autocad and used a mill again and drilled the screw holes. its one of those things i guesss that if youre making a one-off then you just have to bite the bullet and go for it. but if it was batch/mass produced then i guess you could make a large jig that positions neck pocket, pickup holes, bridge holes and control holes all in one go.
Hmm, unfortunately a metalworking mill is way out of my reach. Also, they run much slower than a router so I would guess wouldnt leave such a clean cut, but maybe Im wrong.
Yeah i saw your thread for you fanned fret build - thought it was absoloutly fantastic. The headless is my first serious attempt at designing and building, and once i finish it i shall make design alterations and build a second prototype. headed too. I would quite like to build a fanned fret bass at some point. maybe my next scratch build. I though about how to mark out and set the fret positions and did a model on autocad with a 35" E and a 32" G (or there abouts), but then read that you were having intonation problems up the neck - do you think this was due to incorrect marking out/cutting on your part or due to some secret that we dont know about fret positions on fanned fret basses? I like what you did and went for a less extreme faning than the dingwall. i hadnt' though of making the fret perpendicular at the 3rd fret though. sounds a lot better than the 10th or 12th that i did.
As it turned out, the intonation problem was only really slight, and was caused by being less than acurate with the fret saw - nothing wrong with the marking out. I used fretfind on the web, just google it. A less extreme fan and placing the parallel fret close to the nut makes it a surprisingly easy bass to play up to the 7th fret. Above the 12th it gets a bit weird but its certainly not unplayable. Give one a go, it was a little more complicated than a normal build but so much fun.
Try a Wizard Thumper. You lose a little sizzle, but gain a lot of output and pokier mids.
Id disagree - Plently of sparkle here WARNING 10 Meg wav file - that was my P bass with maple board, maple top over a hard ash body, with a Wizard Thumper. The recording isnt that great, but it does show that if your bass does zing then the Thumper wont necessarily mask it.

Hi Karl, nice pair! I like how they are both totally different concepts. Im more drawn to the headless, but thats probably cos I dont own a headless and I like the look of yours
On the second bass there is a bit more that needs doing. When strung up, the bridge saddles will not go low enough to get the strings closer to the board - even when acounting for the fingerboard radius and frets being in place. So I am going to sink the brigde rails into the body a bit. I shall do this by either sinking them in individual pockets, or by shaping a dip running from the back of the pickup hole right through to the body's tail, using the two bubinga stripes either side of the bridge as the edges of the trough and blending the shape up into the ash wings. I think it has the potential to become a rather interesting feature on the bass.
If do choose to route out individual pockets for the bridge pieces then I'd love to see how you do that. Im been trying to come up with a jig for that kind of job and I just cant figure out the best way to do it.
The build to get into the state you see it now took 3/nearly 4 days. I expect that it should take about the same amount of time to get the bass to the stage where I can start thiniking about finnish and frets.
Wow, you work fast!

I gave my old guitarist a call yesterday evening and told him Im not interested - esecially as they were planning on writing a whole new set and touring it around the south east I also had a chat with the drummer, and told him my reasons. It turns out we both had the same reservations, so thats good. Both are top blokes and I would love to work with either of them again, if they also wanted to move to Yorkshire. Im pleased Ive managed to get this sorted without losing any friends. Cheers to everyone for the advice.
He was looking to get in a band and after a while asked if I'd be interested - like he needed to ask, really . Bit more practice and I'm feeling ready so suggest, a couple of months ago, we start looking around at forming this band. Drummer says he's busy until past christmas now - all of a sudden, then lets slip he's thinking of taking up an offer from another bass player.
This looks like the band with this drummer was never actually formed, in reality it was just an idea the two of you were bashing about. Youve not invested anything yet so youve got nowt to lose. The guy is a good friend and is probably feeling a little unconfortable about the whole thing too, so just keep jamming since that what you both enjoy. Dont expect anything more than dreaming though, and if it does become a band then bonus. In the mean time keep your eye out in case something else turns up. Ive been in loads of pub conversations where all present agreed to form a band - very rarely did anything ever come out of it.
It's all about the Barefaced Vintage. Nothing comes close, IMHO
Not even the Compact? I rather liked them!
I would say hang on a bit longer and get the dough together for a BareFaced Vintage 2x15". My 2 Compacts are stunning together and can only presume the Vintage is the same if not a little better. Cheers, JTB
Accoring to the website, a single Compact can happily handle up to 600 watts, so the 500 watt Hartke wouldnt present it with a problem. http://barefacedbass.com/compact.htm
+2 Heard Merton's Vintage at the SE Bash and it was unbelievably good!! And considering it's a 215, it was pretty light as well...
+3 - and Merton also runs a LH 500 I believe. Excelent tone from that combination. I was really impressed with all of the Barefaced offerings, but particularly the Compacts and Midgets. Maybe start with a Compact, then add a Midget if and when you need the extra volume?
Need to get some more Midgets out there to get pushed to their limits! I think this could be the first production 1x12" that can actually hang in a RAWK band. Alex
Hey Alex, do you have any plans to send one out on tour? I'd love to put the Hartke through it with the three piece!

I got my 3 pack of strings through the post - cheers to Hamster for posting! Looking forward to stringing up the P in the next few days Lets see if I can get that action down a little

heres a dumb question to those who know - Christian rock is a big genre, arent Christian rock events normally marked in their advertising? In the same way that metal events are obviously metal and folk events are obviously folk? Otherwise, it seems a little nieve to assume every unsigned band in Scotland of every genre would want to write religeous songs.

Hey, sounds good! I was with you right up till you said 'Fender decal'. If youre making something unique, like noone else has got, why go stick a stock logo on it of something it isnt? Make it your own!
