1.
I felt the same way but finding a nice us jazz V has made me realise I do like having one in my arsenal, the dodgy ones with crap B strings just makes me more happy to have this one, its already picking up a few marks and I dont mind somehow it feels right.
" its already picking up a few marks and I dont mind somehow it feels right." Understand this completely.... I have never abused an instrument in any way what so ever but there's something about the jazz's I've had which has a quality of an old pair of slippers ..... They are a bass which I am not too precious over in regard to nicks and bumps (neck excluded) something about this helps me to relax with the thing, something I could never do with some of the more top end gear I've had like status kB or MM's I've had.... Regarding the fender product line...... I'm glad that they have the american standard p and j bass's, and to me , these should represent fenders 2015 take on the original design. They pretty much do aside the improvements you would expect such as truss design, machine heads, high mass bridge and custom shop pick ups...... All in all very good. The other American variations such as 60's concentric pot , vintage 6o's and 70's j and p are all warranted in the USA line up too. The custom shop gear is what it is, but I ink should be a made to order and spec arrangement rather then churned out and sold amongst the masses but just at a higher price. They should be special, given the utmost attention and assembled by one luthier rather then a line . ( i imagine this is how they are done anyhoo) This brings me to the OTHER "fender" gear..... Mexicans, japs, squires etc etc....... As far as I'm concerned they shouldn't carry the fender brand, these should all come under the squire brand ..... Why do I think this? Well, I have played many USA fenders and sure, they can be mediocre at worst but sweet as hell at best. And usually , the sound quality is dependable as well as playability. This can't be said for the most of the squire stuff. I have played ones which are set up well and play fantastic, but plug them in and crank it up and they begin to sound like their price tag demands. I borrowed a friends squire by fender p bass recently for a rehearsal when I was between basses.... I was happy enough to take it along as it played great. I run it through my mesa and it just sounded so thin and transparent, it really made me see why the fender stuff is the premier stuff. Incidentally, same friend asked me to purchase and install new pick ups and circuitry to the squire p, stuffs in transit as we speak..... The bass plays well enough so maybe this upgrade will make the thing worth its salt...... Dunno, I'm open to being convinced....it shall speak for itself I guess. But, outside of the standard fender (USA) stock, they're are many signature models and variations, something i NEVER wanted to entertain as I preferred to keep things original with either p or j. I was amazed with myself last week when without hesitation i traded in my 3 month old am Stan jazz for a 70's reissue hotrod, something i always saw as a freak between the two, confused and having somewhat of an identity crisis....... But OH MY GOD , was I gob smacked at how good this bass is, bags of tonal range, plays like a beauty .... Just "feels" right.
2. I just don't get it with rush ? Always thought them overrated but to be fair I've never given them much of a go as I was turned off by what I had heard...... To those of you who are in the rush camp, please post a vid which you think will show me what they're all about.... Maybe you can show me what I'm missing ? (A genuine request, not a dig )
3. Yeah I found them backing tracks too, great for practice, many keys...
4. I agree, pissed on gratuities It sounds like a combination of NWR being a little too well oiled, and wilko playing the track at a speed fractionally quicker then they had rehersed......... Poor norm was playing catchup and didn't seem able to keep up? ( I'm sure he can normally but under pressure of tv and pissed......) Let's cut them boys some slack they're all getting on a fair bit now
5. Links not right mate, would love to hear it.......
6. And not once has any one mentioned the bungled attempt to chop off Josh's head...... I'd have settled for someone giving her laryngitis for Christmas ... I'd have liked to have seen something along the lines of an African bands news years jam, they always have great bass tones and an interesting take on bass playing.....or something like the debut of sea sick Steve..... That's the type of thing i want to see on jools's show.... Refreshing, not regurgitation.
7. The later show can be so good and so bad all within the Sam show.... Reason diversity of genre is what keeps the show credible. Sure, the entire show may not be to the taste of every viewer but allowing jools to showcase these acts will only help broaden ones pallet. That said, I don't tune into the hootenanny or new year show because they are so predictable old and tired. Every time, ruby turner and that dope with a clock for a head?....?.?.. Wt actual f is that ? Can't stand jools jumping in on everyone's act with his boogie woogie, its predictable and cringeworthy at times with artists clearly uncomfortable with his showboating.... Live music is great, variety is also great..... Some of the usual faces on the show are really not that good. Joss stone, karaoke at best. Compare her to Jocelyn brown ..... Now that's soul. FFS... Check this out.... http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LhWACvG2ISQ
8. What about some of victor wootens more melodic solo stuff..... He does a great version of isnt she lovely Looped parts but fantastic none the less http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eynnYLXW3Fo Great

Very recently in: Fender american vintage reissue seventies hot rod, 3tsb, rwn, tsp Amp wise : Ashdown rig out Mesa walkabout rig in
10. Mrs wonky got a new cd by pop ginger whinger ed sheran..... All crap but track 3- sing, is about the only one I can stand, modern and got a great groove, would go down well but could present a challenge for any vocalist to be fair.... http://youtube.com/watch?v=b48_NzPWSJI
11. I once, when I was young and daft, had a Kramer bass like John deacon had used.... The one with the aluminium neck and forked head stock..... Was a fecker to keep in tune in a warm club....
12. I'll say it again for those who didn't watch this link.... This band is fantastic... 4:00 mins in and really is awsome.... If you didn't click and watch first time, honestly, take a few mins to watch this..... Very credible. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5ddJRBQFRoY
13. Only dislike is the neck finish.... My am stan had no or satin finish on the neck, this hot rods got a lacquer of some sort... It's not mega sticky like some I've played but it isn't as nice a feel as that dry satin finish... Might remove it if possible , any one know best way to do this? Wet and dry? Some kind of chemical stripper?
14. Check this out !!! I would be well chuffed to play this one Even got a little limelight with the thumb http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jTXmSuqkXEY Don't know who his bass player is but he's got some great tone there
15. I'm not bein funny like, but check this out and tell me you don't wanna play this...... Very cool when done like your enjoying yourself..... http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5ddJRBQFRoY The more i watch this the more cool he gets...... Would love to play in a band like this...
16. Funny enough, someone asked me to play a few songs with them recently and top of the agenda was........ Nik kershaw... But... I was pleasantly surprised to hear the new (?) version of the songs released by Nik on a solo album with him just playing guitar and singing.... Old songs, new twist... Very good. They're actually quite complex in chord progressions in some places. I urge all to have a listen on spottily or the like... I just searched for Nik Keyshawn solo and up,they popped.. I agree with what's been said..... Loads of pants songs out there regardless of age, but a good song played well will always sound great. What about beds are burning or whatever it was called by midnight oil Or any Duran Duran song, great bass lines... Not sure I'd want to do the circuits with it but it would be fun for a while... Enjoy it Have a listen to this, one things sure he was a fantastic song writer and this track proves he is a great guitarist too. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BT25g6HDVQc
17. Yeah, the am Stan i had was four string and a 2014 model (came straight from fender depot in holland to my door;) ) The brand new models have the custom shop pups, I guess they see it as an upgrade, but personally it warmed the tone up too much for me and it lost its mid growl..... It was a great bass ,one i thought I'd stick with but I played this and was convinced straight away. Fenders are a bit hit and miss and no two play alike side by side off the shelf... Maybe a good set up can get them close but i do believe they can be either fantastic or mediocre at best.... I never liked the horrid models, neither jazz nor precision ...like it couldn't make its mid up what it wanted to be... I played a few and didn't like them... But this one, BANG! Straight away that tone was killer. Neck is also a different shape. This has a u shape where I had always gone for the c shape. It was the neck and the tone range that sold this bass to me. I was a little out off as the am Stan had translucent paint (3tsb) and you could see lovely grain... This alder bodied hot rod is 3tsb but a solid paint job with no wood grain to be seen.... As I say, guess that's a vintage thing. It also had great sounding / feel strings as stock.... Round wounds.... I have played with flats for a good while now and love them but this tone is great i don't reckon ill change them just yet....
18. Crappy photo , I'll wait till the little wonkies have gone to bed and I've done my santa bit before I can get it out and have a good look at it.... Was surprised that this ore expensive model has a solid sunburst paint job and not translucent paint to show the grain like my cheaper american standard had....i guess its a vintage reissue thing... I'll get a better pic on later It deffo sounds better then the am Stan with the custom shop pick ups... They changed the tone of the bass too much. This has the standard alnico's and the jazz bridge pick up is probably closer to the bridge I guess helping with that 70's mid growl
19. I'll get a pick on once I've removed my fist from this turkys arris. I had a quick look before, it's the seventies vintage hot rod, just need help with the serial number.... I know its brand new but I'd like to know if its been sat on the shelf somewhere in America for ages Got it at a great price so just looking for the catch I guess ......
20. Seems that santa's come early this year for me... As well as paying my £100 speeding fine he's been kind enough to get me a new bass ! Went in my local and played a new fender vintage seventies hot rod (jp)... Had to have it and did a quick deal on the am standard jazz I bought a few months ago. It's got some wicked tone, stacks more then the am Stan but I need a couple of answers if anyone can help... I can't find the serial number listed anywhere , I understand that the vintage reissue stuff has odd serial number sequence... The number is :HR002481 Can any one tell me when this was made ? Its brand new and has been brought over the pond by my local shop but the serial means nothing to me and I can't date it ??? Any help is welcomed.
21. Id really love to see a copy if anyone is willing to forward it to me ?
22.
I like the live version of Young Lust. Nothing too fancy, but right.
Listen/ watch 1:45......???? Overdubbed ? Or maybe just poor video editing ? I love roger and floyd immensely and like most here have said its what inspired me to pick up a guitar/ bass.
