So almost exactly two years on, I got a second look at this bass. Had zero practice time since that build and it moved from car to garage. The crazing is just amazing - it looks about 100 years old - amazing stuff nitro

I had an MG car once, it was acceptable to replace old with new provided it looked like the OE part and the OE part was beyond repair; it was generally advised to keep the OE part just in case - maybe we should apply that logic here
Possibly plectrums stuffed in there contribute to resonance within the wood ? Long as it’s the right wood and the right kind of plectrum and the right orientation of course 🍿
Tbh I’d just buy a jap reissue and leave it at that. They’re made well enough that they are probably what you’re expecting a vintage fender to be but without the insane price tag
More a “lack of poor taste” I suspect
slap bass does not smell of
