they ask a lot of money for their product and pretty much only because its made in America. Whilst I appreciate that Americans are paid more than the Chinese; its not proportionately better for being made in the US, or each one absolutely perfect . Its not like each one is carefully blessed by magic pixies upon completion. Just priced out of its market. I'd say the same about US fenders. I had an epiphone les paul that blew a real gibson out of the water once i'd replaced the pickups. Worth the extra to go Gibson? I didn't feel so.

i recommend the "blues tribute" pickup from "Only Music" on ebay - cheap and very fat

@Horrorhiker No Mexican since about 2007 or so has been really good. The earlier ones were a bit ropey as well as inconsistent in quality ive tried 97, 99, 03 And 09 my pet theory about the skunk stripe is that they didn’t season the dark wood well and it moved a bit once assembled but that could be rubbish like the others said - just sand it flat if it bothers you. I used it to help put my thumb in the right spot

@Horrorhiker I have had a few problems like this but they were all on early mex examples. I don’t think it’s quite the problem that it used to be

worth noting that bass players were pretty integral to the hendrix sound; imagine "Freedom" without billy cox and "purple haze" without Noel.
