1. Thanks Understand general nut adjustment principles - looking for a steer on normal values for nut height and action on an acoustic
2. Could you give me a clue what yours is at ? Hear what you're saying but I think bridge action is a large part of the problem
3. I'm not sure duress would really work. He might not enforce his clause, but he has got the right to. Whether it would be worth his while legally is another question
4. I have a generic acoustic bass. I think its straight as alreluef at 10th using a capo on fret 1 is about right - credit card thickness - action is still suitable for limbo dancing Strings are phosphor bronze 40- 95 Am I right in think the only thing I can do is file down the saddle ? What action is respectable for an acoustic ?
5.
I've got the hots for Kate Davis.
yes, some quality fingering there. ..... particularly around 2:34 and I just love the little smile when she's done that awesome run. Minx. plays awesome bass, and she's hot.
6.
am still a newbie I am learning how to play for the second time (long story lol) and I am finding it harder this time but it is all about enjoying it but it is so hard to find any spare time to practice when you have a young family but just do what you can dont beat yourself up if you cannot play something put the bass down go have a brew and go back to it
This...
7.
I'm 46 ! It's a hobby to keep me out of trouble ha! Frustrating but also therapeutic !
I had no other training and sucked at music in school. I don't get a lot of practice time due to small children but I read a lot and think my way through it as s substitute for real physical practice. It's slower but you can resolve issues by thinking them through. I've played an open mic night now I have two lessons for you to consider : It's important to remember that you will have good and bad days, and to be able to bounce back from the bad days Practice is more important than flash gear
8.
Don't think it does?.......
I apologise - misread replacement as relief
9. Yes - see my comment above about relief
10. You can buy a magnetic tin which is better I use it a lot but I helpfully the neck relief section is not near the action section. But that's my only criticism
11.
Am i the only person who thought the Ramones were crap?
I wouldn't say "crap" but mediocre, perhaps
12.
H Al and John. Any tips on first starting out on bass? I got a great bass tutor so that's a start! Just looking for pointers to get the most out of learning and playing?
I think taking lessons, and being very aware of how much you don't know is an awesomely good start, Gomez. People get into some very bad habits, and can get very disheartened, from trying to push their way through alone. Best of luck, you're starting from a good place. There is no such things as a stupid (on-topic) question. Just ask, someone here will know for certain pretty much anything you'd want to know. Everyone was a newbie and beginner once.
13. I have a 5 string peavey BXP millenium I want to list soon, if that takes your fancy?
14. yes, if you chat with the organiser, they might get someone suitable to give you a chance. I got taken on by a guitard who was very generous with his time to get a song together for the next OM night. He suggested a 12 bar in a key of my choice and encouraged me to play with the arrangement a little, so I made some of the repeat-chord bars walk up and down across two bars rather than repeat the same pattern and changed notes so I was near the starting note of the next chord rather than jump a long way. He liked my ideas. We had a quick run through using an acoustic bass first which was a huge confidence builder. I have to say that my Stingray copy sounded amazing through an Ampeg, and still good even when recorded on an iphone by a friend. Found out last time that said guitard's band has been opening up for acts at the O2 last month. NO pressure there then.
15. That's what happened on my first time but it left me determined to prepare properly so it doesn't happen again
16. Go ! Don't hesitiate Take your bass as at least it will be a talking point. You can be "the only bass player in the village", you don't have to play. I took it each time - observed the first time, met some people and played second time. 12 bar is fine if you're a beginner, one of my contacts doesn't decide until ten minutes before what he is going to play and was happy with a 12 bar so he could improvise
17.
I subscribe to this guy on Youtube and all his vids are really easy to follow and informative. Goods stuff 👍
Me too - now
18. in my very humble opinion, anything that gets people playing and sounding even vaguely good is worthwhile. Yes, knowing your scales is important for understanding why something works, but it can come along second; confidence and enjoyment should come along first; otherwise learners lose heart very quickly.
19. Just listened for two minutes or so; will listen more in my break but it seems pretty good. Certainly possible to apply it to bass as well as The Dark Side
20.
Joe Pasquale squeaks very highly of him....
fixed it for you...
21.
Was trying to play something the other day and it was jumping all over the neck so basically i was getting a bit lost so i found some sticky dots and numberd my frets 1 to 12 the stickers are behind the neck nobody can see then except me the difference to my speed, being able to find the notes im looking for is so much more quicker im now hitting the notes right and there sounding like the should ie not humming ,ringing etc im able to concentrate more on gettint the notes sharp getting my fingers in the right position, but lol my daughter who i take classes with (shes only 12) says im cheating and is giving me a slagging should i take them off.dots that is honestly they make a hell of a difference to my playing.cheers stuart.
I cant imagine why you'd feel quilty about this. If it helps, do it, and only take them off when you are sure you dont need them any more.
22. I wouldn't risk it - my experience with various classes of U.S. visa is that they take infractions very seriously and you don't muck about with them. The venues could get into trouble too They take biometrics on the way in and if you get caught they'll match it up and you'll be prevented from entering the country ever again. I saw someone get turned back at passport control when I last visited there.
23. I've had one of these and it was totally brilliant
24. Lozz Please let me know how you get on. As a 70s p owner your opinion is of great interest
