My advice is to learn all the A locations one day, then next day remind yourself about those and move on to B and so on. Then you can go back and fill in the flat notes after. Comes togethervquickly. Dont try and do too much on one day as you just wont take it in. We try and be nice to beginners here, everyone has to start somewhere sometime,

Personally I think you should make efforts to learn both at the same time. Spend some time on each - learning note locations shows you that scales aren't just a box shape, learning scales will show you how to fit in with chords .

i doubt you'll ever make money on it. It might hold its value after an initial drop, but custom made stuff wont, in my humble opiniion, accumulate more than any other bass.

[/quote] All I meant was that he could have a bit more freedom and not be swamped, not least as the drummer wouldnt be there, or would be using bongo or bodhran or somesuch. Having done one open mic night, and utterly screwed it up due to nerves, I'm now feeling more pumped, not less.

Probably has confidence issues - why not forget the drums for five minutes and give an acoustic and play along with him quietly to see if it's that ? You can't hide with an acoustic I had exactly this reaction on my first open mic night
