1. Does anyone who has a genuinely worn p bass have any pictures of it they can share ? I'm interested in where they do wear through. I've taken the shine off the paint nicely but I don't want to make it look like a belt sander job (which is what Google might show me) Thanks
2.
... Plus nitro can be quite thin, so watch you don't go through.
Not a problem
3. I would like one but only if it could be certain that no one of average intelligence or more could be deceived further down the line than my ownership
4.
If (If if if if if if if etc) the original sale was the sale of a counterfeit good, then all subsequent sales would be too. It doesn't turn into a legitimate item just because it's been bought and sold. The item itself would be illegal.
I have a law degree, I know this. And actually the second purchaser without notice does get title. I was just saying that the unscrupulous could use these easily to fleece people. I'm saying mark could do more IMVHO to brand them (in the cattle sense) to prevent this - not to detract from his otherwise fine product I hasten to add
5. I was talking about resale further down the line
6.
I remember reading all the PRS -v- Gibson stuff. Functionality didn't come into it. Gibson lost because their lawyer famously told the Court "Only an idiot would get confused at the point of sale" on account that the PRS Single Cut and the Gibson Les Paul are actually very different and have their own names on the headstocks and the different shapes. Point of Sale doesn't have to be from a shop - it can be any subsequent sale as well. But the Limelight ones use Fender's proper logo and headstock shape. I can't imagine that scribbling Limelight on the back in biro would be enough. I don't like it. It's too easy for the next owner to remove the Limelight bit and try and flog it as a proper Fender.
I do agree about creating fertile ground for fakes, but I was talking about a future argument not some past argument. I'm not sure that I could tell the difference between a limelight with the marker pen removed and a real fender. If he was to metal stamp "replica by limelight" into the back of the headstock, neck pocket and under the pickguard then I would have no problem with his work and neither would fender, I imagine
7. I just tried one of those green pan scourers (not the one i used for the last three weeks obviously) and it seems to be quite good at taking plates down a step or two
8. A walking blues ? Like the detail of the broken tip on the (lower front) plate
9. Doesn't it need to be quite fine ?
10. I have a precision body with fairly drab sunburst and shiny nitro lacquer. Does anyone have tips for toning down the shininess of the laquer in the manner of an older bass ?
11. I certainly wish him well - he built me an awesome bass that makes me smile when I look at it. Get well soon Howard
12. They'll start with a cease and desist letter and if he's smart he will act immediately. Worst thing to do with a legal dispute is hope it will go away
13. It was a stock, dirty bass. I think the magic was elsewhere
14.
I might be wrong (it frequently happens) but I think that ruling applies only to body shape. The headstock shape is still Fender's.
It talks about outline shape too. If this ruling existed only about body it wouldn't be hard to extend it to headstocks since bodies and necks are functionally integral
15.
I understand that they leave the hardware soaking in salt water overnight I understand that Fender did threaten to take action against Bill Nash, forcing him to change his operations and only use Fender decals on 'bitsa' basses that he puts together from genuine Fender parts!
Since the hold the trademark I don't think that's an unreasonable settlement legally. He's still got a business and they still keep their IP and design rights
16. I like a worn in feel and I'm not a big fan of shiny instruments It's why I rubbed away at the back of the neck and the underside of my p bass with a steel scourer, it feels comfy now I'm not so confident in relicing the body or metal work so I don't Anyone have a suggestion how to age nitro laquer ? (Neck and body)
17. A precision bass, in tort and sunburst, it can do everything - although possibly not your ironing
18. I'm sure he will get back to you as soon as he's better.
19.
Personally I don't give a sh*t what anyone thinks about what I'm playing whilst trying out a bass. I'll play what I want to play to make sure the bass I'm considering is going to suit me and what I play.
Quite. fork 'em
20.
At my local shop (Pete Oakley's Burton) he does not like people stepping upstairs to look at his stock of guitars, you are certainly not allowed to pick them up and have to ask to try them and are constantly monitered. As for basses...he has a fair sized room he uses for storage next door to the shop, which is always locked. Anyway it has a very big window and you can see guitars hanging on the right hand side of the wall. This is where the basses lye, forever to gather dust. There must be at least 40 or 50 in there, I highly advise customers to shop somewhere else. Both guys who run the place are complete jackasses
They sound like total clowns
21.
If I remember correctly the MIJ/CIJ 75 RI Jazz does not have 70s spacing, but MIA does.
Spot on
22. Wow pretty Not usually my thing but that is nice with a capital Mmmmm
