Yep, it's another one of those threads... Here's the story. I love my two Overwaters (the Tanglewood ones) and my passive P/J classic J is my main gigging bass. However I've just played a Fender Jaguar that the bassist from other band from tonight's gig was playing and it's so nice, and light and easy to play. My Overwaters are like tanks, they're a few inches bigger than Fender basses (despite both being 34" scale) and weight a frikking tonne. Around a third heavier than the Jaguar I played I reckon. So I want to try out some basses as a replacement. Budget is probably up to £600, new or used, I don't mind. Well, used will get me more bass Has to be passive, I don't like the active sound. I love the P/J pickup config on my current bass and I really do want the option of panning between them or sitting in the middle of the two pups. Could be a J/J, a P/J or something else. Has to be light - no heavier than a, well, standard P bass I guess, and must be "normal" size or smaller but not short scale so I'm looking at 34" scale still. Normal size means not the behemoth size of my Overwaters I used to be anti-Fender (booooorrrrriiiinnnnnggg) but I'm finding myself gravitating towards them now so they're actually top of my list. To give you an idea I'm thinking Fender Aerodyne, Fender Modern Player Jazz or something similar. I'm not adverse to trying any brand and my personality usually favour the non-mainstream brands (hence no Fenders so far in my list of currently owned basses). So, what would you recommend I try in my quest for a replacement main bass?
What about a mex jazz bass ? I'm selling a superb one

In beautiful condition with a very nice wood grain. Deep sunburst , with rosewood board and white plate. Pickups and controls are original and work perfectly. Superb woody tone. No buckle rash, scratches or dings. Set to have low action. Very light at around 4.2kg Made in Mexico, 1998 Comes with the padded hard case shown. This has an external side pocket and many internal bays. One repairable stitching break on one handle. Can be collected from near j28 m1 (sutton in Ashfield) or I will ship to your location at cost. Advise your exact location but this is likely to be around £20 for mainland destinations Please PM rather than reply - I will listen to sensible offers

So jealous ! Wish we had those round our way

Thanks - I don't have the space for acoustic - a simple cheap EUB will do. I suppose I could always put some lines on with tape - just didnt want to buy a piece of junk I tried a stagg EUB once - never spotted the dot markers How do you guys find the correct spot on the neck for any given note ?
-
-
if I was wanting to learn - is it possible to get lined EUBs ? Also could someone recommend a decent EUB to learn on ? Thanks
-
Agreed - they should at least have a good look at it. Did you notice the issue when you were trying it in the shop? If not, it might suggest that it's something environmental at your house
-
Suggest you 1. Take the bass to a friends house and try it there with a fresh cable and amp. Turn off any lights 2. Try it there with your cable and then your amp See if the problem stays If you still get the issue you probably have a wiring fault or need shielding, but I never needed shielding on a p bass There is a whole sticky thread on this topic. Suggest you get copper foil with conductive glue as its a lot easier
-
I used to get this when too close to the amp -

If you had to make do with one bass - which would it be?

My "bass doc" built 70s precision replica. It's just amazing -
P basses are simple machines, it's sometimes a few small tweaks than make a bass great. Why not get him to take a look at one of yours and see if he can add some magic to it?
True - just a simple setup or different string gauge can totally alter the feel

I've been unexpectedly blown whilst away.., oh sorry..misread the question. A sunburst jap precision bass had me going all Motown, couldn't stop playing it. Guybrush threepwood has it now I believe

Geek99 replied to Muzomatt's topic in Basses For Sale
Final price reduction on this bass. I cannot afford to let it go for less than this- an absolute bargain!!!! £1300
You should update the first post as it still says £1600 - may be putting people off who only read first post. Good price - but no GAS here -
Wunjo's sounds great - I'll definitely check it out when I'm next in London. I found the Gallery to be a less than pleasant experience :-(
I finally got there (after five years of trying on family trips) and they were closing. Stayed open for a few minutes on a friday night just for me so I have no complaints whatsoever

Do you (can you) count 1, 2, 3, 4 per bar while playing?
Geek99 replied to tedmanzie's topic in General Discussion
I do count because I used to have awful time and lose my place a lot. -
