People get into some very bad habits, and can get very disheartened, from trying to push their way through alone. Best of luck, you're starting from a good place. There is no such things as a stupid (on-topic) question. Just ask, someone here will know for certain pretty much anything you'd want to know. Everyone was a newbie and beginner once.

yes, if you chat with the organiser, they might get someone suitable to give you a chance. I got taken on by a guitard who was very generous with his time to get a song together for the next OM night. He suggested a 12 bar in a key of my choice and encouraged me to play with the arrangement a little, so I made some of the repeat-chord bars walk up and down across two bars rather than repeat the same pattern and changed notes so I was near the starting note of the next chord rather than jump a long way. He liked my ideas. We had a quick run through using an acoustic bass first which was a huge confidence builder. I have to say that my Stingray copy sounded amazing through an Ampeg, and still good even when recorded on an iphone by a friend. Found out last time that said guitard's band has been opening up for acts at the O2 last month. NO pressure there then.

Go ! Don't hesitiate Take your bass as at least it will be a talking point. You can be "the only bass player in the village", you don't have to play. I took it each time - observed the first time, met some people and played second time. 12 bar is fine if you're a beginner, one of my contacts doesn't decide until ten minutes before what he is going to play and was happy with a 12 bar so he could improvise

in my very humble opinion,anything that gets people [i]playing [/i]and sounding even vaguely good is worthwhile. Yes, knowing your scales is important for understanding [i]why [/i]something works, but it can come along [u]second[/u]; confidence and enjoyment should come along first; otherwise learners lose heart very quickly.

Just listened for two minutes or so; will listen more in my break but it seems pretty good. Certainly possible to apply it to bass as well as The Dark Side

I wouldn't risk it - my experience with various classes of U.S. visa is that they take infractions very seriously and you don't muck about with them. The venues could get into trouble too They take biometrics on the way in and if you get caught they'll match it up and you'll be prevented from entering the country ever again. I saw someone get turned back at passport control when I last visited there.

If my three year old can play one without difficulty (other than the stretches) then most people can adapt quickly. It took me literally five minutes to stop looking at the board. I regret letting it go.
