1.
Can we stop having a pop at BGM contributors please. Thank You
Janek says he contributes to BGM for free. It takes time to put together an article like he and the others do. I'm more than happy to read what he has to say on-topic, whatever his personailty off the page.
2. then my passive jazz is way loud. Yes, I have changed the battery before anyone asks.
3. I dont need much - I have a CIJ jazz and a Ray copy. I just play at home and so dont need a big rig. I'm still learning so time is the only thing I need.
4. I have the EST96 (active Ray copy) - its really quite good and the only thing I'd change is the pickup, which is a bit weak. Not sure what model to change it to though. My Jazz is actually louder.
5. "This file is no longer available." I have emailed BGM TWICE and asked for the downloadable files there to be updated. No reply or acknowledgement, whcih is disappointing. It all stopped about issue 31 - which is at least a year ago. Perhaps any of you in contact with Nick Wells could nudge him?
6. Thanks - I was thinking of the g chords and the d . I will try it again in Db
7. I just found the notation for this track on www.davemarks.com. Its notated in Db - I can't post a link as I'm writing this on a blackberry. Is it likely to really be in D but played detuned by a semitone to get more open strings? Doesn't seem the easiest key when using standard tuning.
8. I just subscribed, but am still waiting for my strings.
9.
Thanks everyone. I might try some 40 - 100 on my Jazz as I could do with a bit more brightness.
At the Notts Bass Bash, someone commented that my Jazz sounded like a Rick - I thhink that this was mostly due to the strings.
10. I switched to .40s as my Jazz came with them. Pros- they seem to stay in tune better and should brighter, they also seem to slap better. Cons- they dont seem as beefy (duh) but you can add some effetc or extra mid to solve this. Genreally speaking, I'd say it was a thumbs up for my JAzz, but I'm going back to 45s on my Stingray
11. I concur with the measurements from bassdoc but add that the bridge pickup (to back edge) is 32.5 cm on my 62 reissue cij
12. Last time it was at a pub in nottingham. Worth going to, budgetbassist organised it as I recall. We should do it again really.
13. Will confirm from my 62 ri jap jazz tonight
14. Maybe I'm being dumb, but why is that a typo? There's only one of her.
15. I just subscribed - at least its a UK focused mag. Fewer typos this month, I thought
16. Serious action needed on the typos - but I'm liking the rest. Seriously thinking about subscribing
17. Featured in last months BGM magazine - he plays a rick too I believe . I also liked 'somebody told me' and their version of 'romeo and juliet' off 'sawdust'
18. Its on the sawdust album currently being sold very cheap at hmv - also recommend 'joy ride' on the 'day and age' album
19.
People don't shout about them because they haven't got the supposed kudos of a big US manufacturers name. I've no direct experience of their bass pickups but I've used various Armstrong guitar pickups and they've all been excellent, just as good as your Duncans, Dimarzios, Fralins etc.
+1
20. thanks - the linked list is much easier to read/understand
21. hi - am I being an idiot or are these hard to find on the patch list? Some of the names are so cryptic that I dont know what they are. Can it do a rimshot? thanks
22.
Hi I was wondering if any 1 has had any yhing to do with the Vintage brand bass es by JHS . The model Iam looking at is the EST96AF ( looks like a 5 string Stingray / sub) Is this brand any good or bad?. I want to try a 5 string bass & was going to build 1 . I have a SD MM 5string pickup. as I like the look of Stingrays. If I bought this bass I have a preamp I can put into it & as well as the SD pickup. That way I can have the double H pattern. Any comments welcome thanks
I have exactly this bass (but the four string version) - its fine for what it is, the neck is nice and the fretting is good. The tone shaping is okay. The pots needed a squirt of cleaner and then they were fine. The pickups are alright but a little quiet, my CIJ jazz is louder. The pickup is the only thing I might change about it.
23. I bought it for the first time this month in a bid to make up my own mind. It was okay, Franc O Shea's column told me something I really didnt realise. However the review writers badly need to use a spell checker. Question: they give away free strings with a subscription - are only .45's available? I use lights
24. The 60s bridge pickup is nearer the scratchplate (I have a CIJ 62 RI) than the 70s - judging visually against mine I'd guess there's maybe 15 mm in it
