Maple necks are normally lacquered so like the man says you will need to refin after pulling the frets out anyway so just use a tougher laquer.
You can get some two-part yacht varnish which sets diamond hard in about an hour. I know someone who used it on a staircase, which must surely take more punishment than a neck.

I'm very pleased with my jazz, very comfortable and surprisingly loud for a passive. Will you get the same price if you visit? I'm not sure.
IIRC some old Fenders had a strap button on the back of headstock. If that won't cure neck dive, I don't know what will! (Provided you can find a strap l-o-n-g enough!)
My (62 Ri) Jazz has a hole on the back of the headstock - I was wondering why it was there. thanks
-
My CIJ jazz is quite neck heavy, but thats maybe because the body is surprisingly light - the whole thing weighs less than my Vintage Stingray clone.
Don't be boring with a burst, give my mate in Brum a shout -
Not sure my retinas can cope with that. I've emailed Mr Shuker for a vague estimate. A colleague at work mentioned him anyway so tahts two sources. thanks folks.
What? Remove all that fab mojo? Oh well ... Jon Shuker will do it for you. Brilliant job (you should see my P5) but probably a bit of a wait .. Is S. Yorkshire in the Midlands?
Pressure from above, OldGit, as we discussed. S yorkshire is fairly close as I'm near the border anyway.

does anyone know a good resprayer/refinisher in the midlands? I have a CIJ 62 Ri jazz bass that I bought from OldGit and I wondered how much to restore its 3 colour sunburst glory. I'm happy to strip it down/sand it back to save money. Also does anyone know if its cellulose paint or not?
I thought Norm Watt Roy played the original bass line for Relax
I recall an interview with Norman in Guitarist many years ago, where he said that "many of the Blockheads played on the FGTH sessions" but I dont think he actually said that he played that one specifically. I still have the mag somewhere, I'll look it up.

further to my post above, you dont metnion whether you are playing sitting or standing, or what model you have. I have found that playing sitting down, having the bass on your left leg, with that leg raised (like a classical guitar player) makes it easier to reach.
Any advice? Thanks.
I have had just this problem recently and it has disappeared. I was playing a Stingray clone, I now, courtesy of OldGit, own a Japan Fender Jazz Bass and the problem has disappeared. I would suggest you have a geometry problem - the angle that your hand is extending to the bass, or the thickness of the neck, are giving you pain. I changed bass and the problem went away. I think my problem was worse because I have quite short arms, but the jazz bass configuration was the answer to exactly this problem.

its nice to see one up north. I'd love to go, but I am very put off by the prices. £20 seems steep.
They're very relaxed about returns. You have to find your own courier to ship back to them (I used Parcel2go IIRC), then they'll refund.
I think you'll find that under the Sale of Goods Act, you can reject the goods if the find the fault within a reasonable period of time and report it to them. They have to collect, or pay to collect and you can even charge them for storage if you incur costs.

It's a strange world - the guitar business!

thats very good of you. I will still take a jazz bass off you if you have one, or can get one reasonably quickly. are the prices and stock availability (once ordered from FJ) still as the GE website? -
I've not been there yet but Music Scene in Mansfield are now dealers for Ernie Ball so if it's a stingray you're after I guess that's the place; http://www.music-scene.co.uk/guitars.htm Nottingham's gone downhill, unless they've perked up a bit I wouldn't bother with the miserable old cow that runs Music Inn frankly.
Its okay as a shop. They had a black cutlass on the wall, also an "earthquake-damaged" no-name jazz bass. Lady at Music Scene has always been very nice to me, maybe you caught her on an off-day? There's a good but small shop in Nottingham off mansfield road across teh top of the forest (near the fancy dress shop) -
Depending on the logo on the headstock, your Tokai strat should be worth up to £400, maybe a little more. Bear that value in mind if you're trading. Frank
Its listed on ebay now, perhaps you can advise (item 280266854105). I saw a mint one of similar vintage in black go for £230 last week and that one was mint. As far as I can recall, I paid about £239 in 1989. Mine isnt mint, or totally original. There are 17 watchers though, so its attracting a lot of interest even with 4 days to go. Swapper hasnt got back to me yet.

He hasnt replied and sent a pic yet or told me what specific model/year, so we'll see.

my Strat is a 20 year old (japanese) Tokai in tobacco sunburst with active electronics. I'm happy to trade but dont want another bass with a chubby neck as I have smallish hands. I was going to buy a Squier VMJ with the Ebay proceeds from the Strat for this reason. Anyone have an opinion on the Warwick neck dimensions? Other minor issue is the swapper lives in Essex and I only go there occasionally but thats not insoluble.
-
I'd like a jazz bass (mainly for the thin neck) but been offered one of these instead as a swap for a Strat. Not sure what model, but it has active mec JB-style pickups apparently. any opinons/thoughts/experiences to share?
-
yes sorry, was typing from memory (thanks to Buzz also for the feedback)
-
sure, that would be cheaper than the petrol to get there, however I wouldnt get to check I like playing it, or that the neck suits me, that it has nice grain, or whether its a two or three piece body (which a poster said was important to the tone on another jazz bass thread) Apols for the Cheap S post - I was having a spazzy moment and hit Enter too soon.
