I've been looking at getting another amp recently , and missed out on a Hartke LH1000 the other day , but last night did a gig in an upstairs room . You know what's coming don't you , struggled with trying to get the 4x10 up the very small stairs etc etc. So I did come away thinking perhaps I need another set up with a small head and a 2x12 cab. Trouble is , although i have no doubt I could achieve a very nice stand alone sound with this set up ,but there is no way of knowing whether it would work in a real world situation with a band in full flight unless you have a very understanding shop owner who would let you try it out at a gig. Is doesn't matter that it was a small venue , when you have a drummer on a mission , you have to keep up ! So is there a set up that ticks all the boxes , I'd like to know?

Thinking I may need a spare amp head , are these still a good deal compared to when they first came out .dont know what the original price was ,best I've seen so far is this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=180356634457 Currently using an old 1973 Ampeg B4B Valve head into a 4x10 cabinet , I dont expect the Hartke to be as warm sounding ,but what are users opinions. Cheers

Well if its for your own personal monitoring , start with the basics first . Its surprising how much difference raising your speakers up on a chair or box will make , i like to feel the rumble through the floor but you will notice how many frequencies you are missing by raising the cab up especially if you have a horn in the cab. I usually aim mine slightly on an angle towards the drummer but if your having trouble ,be completely selfish ,and tilt it back at you . Also make sure the guy out front on the desk knows what sound your after ,you decide what sound you want out front and whether its straight bass di or di out of the amp , there is a difference , our sound guy once drove an hour round trip because somebody had forgot to put in my old valve ampeg amp in the van !

OK As a very simple IN MY HANDS test My Marcus Miller is the smallest at the neck , followed by my Yamaha BB1500a Jazz Style Bass , followed very closely by my Squier VMJ bass , with my 78 MIA Precision bringing up the rear totally different profile. Not very scientific I know , but its all in the feel !
+5 on the Mac front... (I have 5 currently) Garage bad to get you started..... move up to Logic Express for not a lot of money and a whole load of program... then take your choice from there... I favor Digital Performer...... but MAC all the way!!
Yeh , if your budget can stretch to it go for the Mac ! Also remember you have two computers for the price of one with the Mac, as Bootcamp which is now built into the operating system of the mac , enables you to run windows XP etc . The general workings of each software recording package are similar and you may aswell try a few demo's out and see which one works best for you. Garageband is a fantastic writing tool free with the Mac , and I'm convinced its built on stripped down Logic code , easy to get going with drag and drop loops in the arrange page and away you go, and as said before you can import these into Logic at a later date if you want. Once you start you wont stop Good Luck

I had a similar experience the other week , decided to take my fretted Squier VMJ out with the soul band , I had recently put some flat wound strings on it. I have to say I had a great sound ,it was going through my old ampeg valve amp ,and a 4x 10 but I think the flatwounds did the trick giving it a bit more thump that suited the band. Suffice to say I think this might be one to take out all the time with this band ,and maybe leave my Marcus Miller at home , or perhaps put flats on that I dunno! Anyway there great bases for the money no doubt about it !

"He's a very nice young man !" Honestly, top bloke ! Deal with confidence I picked up Rob's Roland DB-900 last night , we nearly did our backs in getting down the stairs ,but we did manage to get it to the car. All I have to do now is decide whether it goes in the gig van or stays in the practice room , I'll let me back decide ! Cheers Nigel

+1 for the East Had a marcus retro fitted to my miller bass ,and it pretty much does most things now. I think the j retro deluxe is basically the same circuit ,but by all means check this with Mr East himself, Johns a great guy , and very helpful .
Ey oop. My function band's website went live today, and it includes new recordings in the media section. http://www.thewhitekeys.com/ Incidentally, the new tunes are Pick Up the Pieces, Ain't Nobody, Workin' Day and Night and I Wish. The other tracks there are a fair bit older and not as tight... just so you know! My 'Ray is featured on all of them, although there's a fair bit more compression on it than I would apply myself. It still sexy in a way that only a Stingray can be though.
You lucky bass player ! Wish I could talk our lot round to having a set list like that ! Great playing by the way
