Eh?! Is it me, or is that a different drummer in the band shots? Anyway, that's a nicely done for a live in the studio recording.
Yes well spotted. The guy playing drums on his own at the very beginning of the vid is our actual drummer , but he couldn't make it on the day as he had flu and a kidney infection . So the lad playing with the band is young Tom , who is the sax players girlfriends son , who just happened to be there. Bless him , we originally had him diguised in a motorcycle helmet , but he couldn't hear the music , and although only playing along he didn't know where he was so we plonked a red hat and some shades on him. I think they filmed the proper drummer on the day they they did the ferrari shoot , and spliced it together. I too had flu on the day , but I just suffered for my art , but then I'm a bass player !
How many cameras were there? The video cuts quite professionally between several angles so you either had several cameras or run through the song several times with the single camera in different positions. I'd love to know how you did it on a budget of zilch! PS. Great bass tone
Cheers for that . Just one camera , and many takes. A friend of ours does a bit of filming , although when he brought his camera along we all had a laugh as it resembled the big Russian one that Rodney used on Only Fools !! I think he's edited it on a Mac I have no idea what software. I was suffering with flu at the time , and I must say i was flagging by the end especially under hot spotlights. Used my 1978 Fender Precision in the vid , ( because the the singer wanted a red & black theme ) but the bass on the track is my Marcus Miller , through an old valve Ampeg into a Roland 2480 recorded in the sax players garage.

Did this the other week , pretty chuffed with the way it turned out , considering the budget was £0 http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...20-8dd9271d8026
Very nice! I have the 5 string version, which I love to bits and find a joy to play even though it is prone to earth problems and I was thinking of getting the East replacement preamp to solve this? What mods are you thinking of having done? I've had a look at the wiring and it look horrendous, which I found amazing for a bass of this expense! I don't want to steal you thread but any advice would be appreciated. Cheers Charla
Yeh great guitar I have the 4 string version , and took the plunge and have had the East Marcus preamp fitted , and it is now a swiss army knife of bass sounds .

Lovely thick bass sound that our Trev is getting on this, looks like a Precision to me , and I know its probably going through god knows what compressor wise , and a large PA . Or is it some Line 6 varax or Roland V bass ,what do you reckon? Also nice to see him at the end pay respect to Louis Jardin, who apparently played the bass part on the record , and is in the band playing percussion behind him. ( I always thought it was Sly & Robbie ) Anyway enjoy! http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=bj4xWuM86GE&...feature=related
If you buy a J Retro not only will you get a fantastic sounding pre but you will also get the absolute best in customer service should you need it. John sent me the parts to fit my J Retro into my Lakland DJ4 for free - The man is a star and deserves your business.
Yeh 2nd that John is a top bloke , got him to fit one of his Marcus Retro's to my Miller bass , the other month , and love it , almost a Swiss Army Knife of tone's ! Just noticed you are in Henley on thames , John is probably less than an hour from you by the way.
Before you sell it, slap on some DR fatbeams & listen to it through an outboard Sadowsky preamp pedal. I only parted with mine because a stunning 5-string Status S2-Classic came up.
Yeh great bass ,don't sell it ! I new I was going to keep mine thats why I just had a John East Marcus Retro 01 fitted , it now does pretty much everything . Just need tp develop and patent a fret lowering system , and I'm sorted !!! NIgel not Bob

Just to add I have a Squire VMJ and also a Marcus Miller , having bought the Miller I thought I would have moved the VMJ on by now but I have to say I haven't yet , every time I pick it up it plays so well that I think " no I need to keep this one " Saying that , the suggestion of the yamaha's is a good one, I always think they are great value , and offer a lot for the money, in fact I'm thinking of picking up a cheap Yamaha 5 string myself some time . Good Luck Nigel not Bob !
On Wednesday afternoon I went into the studio with my band's songwriter / guitarist / vocalist / leader / frontman to put bass down on a few songs. Over the course of 2.5 hours we managed to do four songs. For the most part, this consisted of 5 minutes for me to record my take, and then half an hour of the producer drag-dropping each note in his DAW so that it lined up perfectly with the existing tracks, and muting all the string noise between notes. At one point, while he was dragging a note, I said "so, how many milliseconds out would you say that one was?" He paused, checked the screen, and said "I say about 1/24th of a beat". The reason that I had asked him at this point was that, from looking at the waveforms, this note seemed to be at the very top end of the range - most of them required far, far less dragging than this one. I appreciate that this method is probably standard operating procedure. As the producer said, it makes the song sound tighter. The aforementioned band leader wants a tight sound, so I'm going to go along with his wishes without kicking up a stink. But my personal preference would be for a more natural, honest sound. There's one particular string of three notes which has been so perfectified that I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to it without cringing. To most people, it will sound great. To me, it will sound like a con. Top priority is that the end recording sounds great. But I wanted to vent. And to find out what opinions and related experiences other basschatterians might have. S.P.
We were talking about this the other night funny enough, and I think there is a case in point to say that you have to be careful not to lose the soul of the song if that makes sense. Espscially if the song has developed through band practice and ideas etc. If on the other hand it was written on computer ,and lends itself to that disiplined sound then it may work. Either way you need to remain focused on the original object of the song. Or perhaps the above is all bollocks !
no slot for one, and apple dont offer it, so gotta sell really
Yeh thats a real sh*t that Apple has dropped the firewire on the macbook. I was going to get one but I'm rethinking at the moment , as I don't see why Steve Jobs can force us to buy a macbook pro at twice the price . There is always the white macbook which still has the firewire ( crazy , go figure ) Have you'd tried taking it back to an Apple store and saying you want a refund as its not fit for purpose , you had no prior warning that firewire wouldn't be on the macbook especially as it is a standard mac feature that they designed ! Sad to hear this, good luck Nigel not Bob!
I'm after a nice 4 string (yes, that's right a 4 string) jazz bass, to inject a 70's type vibe into my playing for my one band. I like the look of the Fender 70's classic basses, they're nice but a lot of people over on talkbas seem to be swapping things out on them, pickups etc. I also like the Marcus Miller bass, but I have to admit I'm not 100% on the pickguard. Laklands also look good, either the Daryll Jones or this one's really caught my eye, this looks very cool. http://www.lakland.com/ac_j-sonic.htm I like the Fender RI jazzes they look pretty cool. As do the Fender Victor Bailley basses. I don't really have a budget as such, at the moment I have about £500, but I don't mind waiting a few weeks, saving up and getting something better. Suggestions please !.
Well if its any use I bought a used Marcus Miller and had a John East Marcus Retro 01 just fitted , and it sounds and plays dam fabulous, well happy !
Sounds like you need a Warwick Corvette standard passive. Every one I've picked up has been a great feeling & sounding bass. You can always add a preamp (either onboard or outboard) later if you're wanting more output. As for my tastes, most of my basses have a preamp with 3-band eq. I don't twiddle at all. I have one setting. Treble & bass at full boost, mids flat & pickup pan in the centre detent. Easy. Just plug in and go Rich.
I would say feel first , I loved my Marcus Miller 4 string neck , but couldn't get on with the pre amp , just had John East drop in one of his Retro plates for me the other day ,and it has totally transformed the bass for me tone wise. Tried Johns 78 Fender Jazz while I was there ,and we both commented on the thinner neck of the Miller , in fact i would say it was a different profile betwween the 78 Jazz bass ,and my own 78 Precision.

Yeh had a great day Thanks to Nick & Merton for getting this altogether . Lovely selection of bass exotica I must say ! Shame I had to go early , had to do a gig , its all rock & roll you know ! Cheers Nigel not Bob !

Hi all Sorry finally got round to doing this . Been playing for 20+ years . Currently in a 6 piece covers party band for weddings , birthdays , corporate things etc. Also just put a 11/12 piece soul/funk covers band together the line up varies , ( why are brass sections a pain to get together ?) Have had the same basic kit for the last 20 odd years but due to Basschat have purchased a Marcus Miller from jazzbassmm on this very forum. Current gear is Marcus Miller 4 string bass , Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass literally bought the day before the Marcus , funny how things happen, I'd given up on trying to get a Marcus and so found this very nice Squier, and blow me a Marcus Miller turned up the very next day on here. Also have a 1980's Aria Pro ll RSB Deluxe , and a 1977/78 MIA Fender Precision ( Which was my first bass ) So there ya go that's me Cheers Plumbob

So a bit of a shuffle in the rack then ! Looks lovely mate , never tried a Lakland but judging by those sound clips you've plenty to play around with there.
Hi Very sorry but no clips currently, sadly lacking, something I need to work for my website upgrade. Below is a quote from a French pro player who bought a Marcus Retro last year, in fact he bought a U-Retro too, for another bass in the end too. >>> I recently upgrade my Fender Marcus Miller V. A good instrument but just one sound, and a a big lack of the Marcus Miller clarity , and the bridge pickup was not "jaco" enough. So i decided to put a MM retro w/o plate. John helped me to choose it too !!! a true gentleman. It's a wonderfull sounding bass now. I can go "hi-fi" and vintage organic sounding with a just some tweaking. This bass will be my meat and potato instrument i can go from Motown sounds to sizzly Marcus slapping tones without changing my bass in some live situation. Nicolas Chelly session bass player touring with Terry Lee Hale. Paris France. <<< I'm sure I have other quotes too, but need to segment them unit by unit, again something I've promised myself I will do. Probably better to talk to me on the my section of the forum here. Cheers John
Cheers for coming across and answering this , sound clips would be a real plus , but this sounds promising , I'll probably be in touch on your section of the forum when i get some money together. Many thanks
There are a few sound clips about but mainly from the EQ01 pre-amp.
