Markbass disappointment..............ok, but not great.
tonyf replied to EmmettC's topic in Amps and Cabs
TBH, I think you'll probably need to spend a while "readjusting" to the tone of your new rig. I was at a similiar point as you about 18 months ago when I got rid of my EBS HD350/Proline 410/Proline 115 rig for no other reason than I was getting cheesed off with the weight. Other than that, I'd been happy for years having done countless gigs with it. The TC rig I'd replaced it with sounded WAY different and for a while I felt I'd made a big mistake. I hadn't of course, I just needed a while to readjust to not hearing my tone as I'd heard it previously through the EBS rig. From this, I'd seriously suggest you have a bit of patience and give it a few gigs with the new amp. Maybe it'll all pan out ok and you'll come to love your new Markbass. If, like me, there's still a part of you than still craves that EBS tone but you want it without the weight, as it's been suggested, have a look at the Reidmar and perhaps get something lightweight cab wise. When I was looking to replace to the EBS cabs, I tried Markstuk's Barefaced Super 12 T in an A/B against the Proline 410 and I've gotta say, it was almost identical in terms of articulation, power and bottom end. And half the weight and size. A truly awesome cab. T -
I'm planning a visit to BassDirect on Saturday to try these out. I'm potentially after a 4x10 although I'd certainly like to try whatever Focus cabs Mark has in stock.
I expect lots of detailed notes, pictures, measurements, statistical analysis, maybe some DNA samples. T

Anyone had chance to try the 410T yet? Seriously tempted to go back to a couple of bigger cabs with my Streamliner. These look and sound amazing for the money. The Ed Friedland demo looks really good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2bNZN6hWHeU
This was my old bass and was traded with tonyf for his Spector. At the time I had this and a gold solid body Asat bass too and tony chose this one out of the two. I loved this bass and loved gigging it. Lush bass but as stated is going for twice what it went for in a few BC deals.
That's a long time ago now isn't it? We're getting old mate T
The CD reissue with his home demos is great too, the rough cut of "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough" with all the family members chipping in on percussion is great and shows how fully formed the song was before the production team got involved - the man doesn't get enough credit as a writer IMO
+1 It's such a fabulous insight into how talented they all were to throw that onto a tape and make it sound so good, so fast. Like you say, it's the tune as it is and the role of the production is to simply add a bit of polish. The old "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". T

This is my old ASAT. Just checked the serials against the pictures I had when I sold it a couple of years ago on here. There was something I thought I recognised in the grain pattern and also it still had the Jim Dunlop straplocks. It was a stunning instrument and was definitely one of my "you're a total dumb-ass for letting that one go" basses. Such a looker but delicious to play. Great skinny fretboard and a really low action. Tonally, such a fantastically open and punchy sound. Definitely "precision on steroids" and not at all acoustic sounding, despite the hollow chamber and f-hole. I used to think the semi hollow body helped open up the top end of the instrument and add a bit of transparency. Lovely bass. If you're thinking about it, you won't be disappointed. T

Two for me for different reasons. 1) Most missed was my 1990 Warwick Thumb NT 5 string. It was truly an epic bass, I'd lusted after one for years and finally picked up a fretless at a really good price of eBay. Had it for a few months and it sounded spectacular, easily the most focused fretless I'd ever heard or played. However, I just couldn't use it in the band I was in at the time, that awful "i need to play more to become better at fretless but I can't play more because I'm not better at fretless" feeling. I was living in Bath at the time so rather than let it go, I had it fretted by my mate Joe at Sound Control in Brum. He had it for a few weeks inbetween trips back and forth but when I finally picked it up, man it was fabulous to have it back and sounding and playing even better. Despite all this, I used it for another couple of years until I found myself in a rock covers band and using it less and less in favour of low slung passive four strings hit violently with plectrums. Off it went and I've regretted it since. 2) The other "sorely missed" was a battered 76 precision which looked the dogs but never really hit the spot from a playablilty and tone point of view. I only wish I'd got it now from a purely financial reason. T
If we don't find someone by the end of this week the rest of our band members have to go home (they can't play without bass and we can't keep them on the show/keep paying them to do nothing) so fingers crossed!
You're joking? The band didn't have a bass player when I saw you a couple of weeks ago but I hardly noticed. Your musicians were absolutely ON IT for a couple of hours solid and sounded great. I didn't notice the absence at all TBH. Glad to see thack is now in situ though. Good luck fella! T

Jumping on the recent "isolated bass track" threads, just found this after following the YouTube suggested links. We do this in one of my covers bands but TBH, I'd never thought it was as busy as it is. A lot of the arrangement covers just how amazing the playing is. Think I need to do a little more to my "interpretation" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hr3HCNIgv40&feature=related

Coming soon to Bass Direct!! Who's going to snap that fast?

Hubba, hubba. That's a beaut..... -
I took my daughter last week to The American Circus in Solihull. Just brilliant. The most amazing couple of hours I've had in a while. A fantastic show and great entertainment. The house band are SERIOUSLY good. It seems like a tough gig though as its music all the way through the performance. Great challenge though and something to be really proud of if you get the gig. Hope you find you bassist. T

I'm probably not the first to post this kind of thing and I'm guessing I won't be the last but I'd like to praise the amazing customer focus and attention to detail of Mark at Bass Direct. Firstly, a couple of weeks ago, he spent ages engaged with me whilst I was in the shop looking at amps and cabs. I'd originally gone in there with the intention of looking at one amp but from spending loads of time listening to what I wanted and asking exactly the right questions, suggested something totally different. Gotta admit, my initial thought was "yeah, but it's more expensive so I'll be spending more cash" but he was right on the money, the Genz heads and Berg cabinets I tried were EXACTLY what I was hearing in my head. Anyway, more importantly, I'd brought some accessories whilst I was there which included a set of DR Sunbeams for my Yamaha Nathan East. Wanted to try something different and again, Mark gave me some great advice on what suited the kind of tone, tension and feel I was after. Went to string up last night and the B string started to unravel as it wound around the string post. No problem, these things happen. A quick email to Mark last night and I get a call first thing to tell me he's dispatching a replacement via first class post. A prime example of brilliant service. Thanks Mark. Tony

Auditions - why are some musicians so damned rude to others?
tonyf replied to molan's topic in General Discussion
Molan and the Magictones. Got a ring to it
Skank ain't lying none. We had a sound powerful e'nuff to turn goat's p*ss into gasoline.... ;-) -
Not sure about having a p'ss bucket floating around in the back...
Glad it's not just me thinking that. I mean, where's the problem with stopping the fckn van in a layby for a "slash and dash" rather than risking dysentery. Euk.

In all the years of playing, I've only ever done the van thing a handful of times as the bands I'm in have always used separate cars for the "fast getaway". However, the one trip I do remember was being in the back of a van on a 30 odd mile trip up the A38 to Barton-Under-Needwood just south of Burton-Upon-Trent. Nothing spectacular apart from being driven at near light speed as we were running late. Me, the guitarist and the drummer in the back of the van, all closed off from the cab, uncomfortably wedged between gear and having only having the dim internal lights for illumination. There was this constant nagging fear of knowing we were travelling at stupidly dangerous speeds but unable to do anything about it and the realisation that if anything went wrong, it'd probably not be pleasent for all concerned. The worst thing though was the travel sickness though. That rush of freezing air as the van doors opened and the realisation that I was still alive and had managed to keep my dinner down. Bliss.
yeah i agree there tony , naked , kneeling towards the hot stones , (seashell that is , not us) while we all whip her with G-strings and the odd B string , while she plays planet earth by brummie band duran duran on bass she's allowed only 2 mistakes , then she's one of us, LETS DO IT...........
"Planet Earth"? Nah, because Brum is the official (Guinness Book of World Records TM and Rob Halford's granny Vera) centre of the Heavy Rock universe, needs to be something more relevant. What about that G'n'R song? How's it start again? Something like ..."Take me down to Paradise Circus......"
