1.
Hows the project looking now tony?
Ain't had a lot of time to devote to it over the past couple of weeks. Have been doing some research though on paint. In terms of getting the large sparkle flake done, seems to be very few sources where i can get the large flake in aerosol because of the practicalities of getting a large enough nozzle on the aerosol can to stop the flakes clogging the tip. May have to compromise on the size of the flake size if i'm going down the rattle can route but hey, that's not a show stopper. There's these people who seem to do the right colour and a smaller size of flake. http://www.specialistpaints.com/product.php?p=flakes-canz As a plan B, been thinking of bottling it and maybe doing an olympic white block colour with a dark red tort. However, I realise that it's probably not that much of a saving of time and hassle and I know I'll regret not doing the flake finish. In terms of parts, need to have a think as to what I'm gonna go for. I'll give Andy at Wizard a call when I'm back off my hols and get the pickup organised. Want something really hot and aggressive but with a bit of mid range presence. Did think of looking at one of the East P-Retro things but I'll suck it and see with the traditional straight ahead vol/tone passive first. Will order the paint over the weekend and make a start on the prepping. As the body is alder, I'm going to grain fill it whether it needs it or not, just to make sure the paint doesn't sink into it. To be honest, the painting isn't the part I dislike, it's all the prep and finish sanding afterwards. Bit of a lazy b*stard I am. T
2.
Gold sparkle is so tacky............................heres mine. It's currently being modified to fit Precision & Soap bar Pickups and a modified Precision scratch plate.
I like "tacky" but "so tacky" is even better because it's more! Great looking bass with the pearloid scratch plate. Did the body come painted like that or did you get it sprayed? T
3. Hi All, After weeks of ummming and arring (is that how you spell it?), I've finally started my Adam Clayton-esque sparkle precision project. I've been such a fan of sparkle finishes, my Modulus Flea (now gone to Philly) always looked fantastic onstage. After seeing U2 last year, I decided I really wanted either a Jazz or Precision sparkle. Having just got myself a Lakland Joe Osbourn, having a P-Bass is now the obvious choice because the Jazz side of things is covered. Currently, using these as a visual reference.... I've just had delivered the body and neck from CH Guitars. After doing lots of digging, they seem to be really great value. Good price but excellent construction and materials. Pickup wise, think I'm gonna go for a Wizard Area 51. Had one of these before and they're fabulous. Really in your face wide open but with the volume and tone rolled off, they still have that love Precision vintage tone. Besides which, Andy is such a genius, it's nice to purchase something that's been virtually hand- and custom-made. Bridge and tuner wise, I'm going for Wilkinson, Hipshot or Badass. Already got be a Hipshot Bass Xtender so it makes sense to stick with Hipshot but the Wilkinson stuff is competitively priced and really good. In terms of the fretboard, I've ordered some block marker stickers. Noticed there's been a couple of basses for sale recently with these fitted and they're an easier alternative to having "proper" binding. Nothing ventured, nothing gained so I've brought a couple of sets. Finishing wise, still in two minds. I really like the challenge of doing the large metal flake sparkle finish myself but it's not gonna be easy. Need to see what the options are regarding "flakes in a spray can". Perhaps I can hire a spray gun and mix my own paint/colour. Alternatively, rather than making a complete f*ck up, I could just get it professionally done and pay for it. Dunno yet. Need to do some homework. As ever, suggestions are welcomed. Alternatively, I could just bottle it and go for a block colour. Like the idea of a black with either a black or dark tort scratchplate. But I know I'll then kick myself for not having the sparkle done. Here's some pics of the neck and body.... Getting quite excited! Tony
4. Exactly the same colour as mine. Had mine for the best part of 15 years now (from new) and it's a bass I'll probably never get rid of. There's part of the relationship that is emotional (every single scratch on it tells a story) but primarily because it's an absolutely killer sounding and playing bass. Bump for a fabulous instrument.
5. I'd vote for Levys. Brought a CM88 (don't know if it's still a current model but there's bound to be an updated version) probably around 12 years ago. Still got it, still absolutely bullet proof. The only damage over the years is a missing zip tag thing that got pulled off somewhere in time. Replaced it, happy days again. Really can't recommend the Levys bag enough. It wasn't cheap at the time but my word, it's been the best investment I've ever made. Including those bloody BP shares! T
6. Thirsty Thursday Bump!
7. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow! That's just fabulous. <WISHING SOMEONE WOULD BUY MY MODULUS>
8. TRADED. Sorry, I'm usually meticulous about updating statuses but dropped a clog with this. Hi All, After much deliberation, I've decided to let go of my Blue Sparkle Modulus Flea. I've been using my Spector almost exclusively for the covers band I'm doing nowadays and the Flea really hasn't had a look in for the past year or so. Guess I'm also probably looking for something a little less aggressive and modern-sounding to compliment the Spector. My Flea was brought direct from Basscentral in the States back in 2006. It's a 05 model and has since had retrofitted a Aguilar OBP-3 3 band preamp and also a Seymour Duncan SMB-4a alnico "MM" type pickup to give it a little more of the pre-EB Stingray vibe. It's a fabulous sounding bass, really crisp, punchy, open and articulate but with loads of grunt when needed. The OBP-3 has made such a difference to the tone shaping capabilities, one can cut or boost the mids to give it a lot more presence in the mix. It's a great player, a really low action and being graphite-necked, it's never moved. Steady as a rock. It's pristine save for a couple of very minor nicks. Both on the back, one in the rib-cage cutaway and the other in the middle of the back of the bass. Being a sparkle, you need to really look for them! Comes with the Modulus hard case. Would prefer a cash sale for around the £850 mark but also looking for trades (plus some cash adjustment either way). After something a little more traditional-ish. Perhaps a Lakland JO or BG, a Roadword Fender Precision or Jazz or maybe, and here's a couple of curveballs, a Warwick Thumb (as I miss that lovely woody bark) or a Spector Euro 5 (as I've just stumbled across a vid of my old band where I was using one and it sounded great). Ultimately, open to trades so what ya got. PM me as I can only say no ;-) Any questions, PM. Cheers Tony
9. There's another thread on the DI here... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...;hl=bass+terror T
10. Can't believe this is still here..... Bump for Phil's 4S ("Spectacular Sexy Special Spector")! Tony
11. Hi All, Gonna put together a DIY build jazz or precision and in the process of trying to find bodies and necks, found CH Guitars on EvilBay. Has anyone used them? The prices are really good and there's great feedback but I could do with some opinions on the quality of the parts. Cheers Tony
12. I've had the same kinda thing with my Bass POD XT Live. Just adore the sound I get from my rig and would ideally want to use the POD XT Live for the occasional effects (ie a bit of chorus, a bit of flange, perhaps the odd envelope filter) without it in any shape or form affecting the core tone. However, maybe it's all in my head but the moment I put the XT Live in the effects loop of the HD350, there's something "different" in the tone, even when I've dropped out all the amp modelling and EQ so that I've in theory just got effects in the patches. Am I missing something? T
13. I've played this NS4 when I met with Phil a couple of months ago. It's simply a stunning looking and brilliantly playing bass which sounds killer too. I was very very jealous that I had to "make do" with my Euro Spector whilst he had this amazing instrument Phil's a total gent and a top bloke to deal with too. Mate, I feel your pain having to let go of this. Hope the cunning plan comes together in the meantime so you can keep it. Rgds Tony
14. Alex, I'd like to be added to the list to try the Compact. I'm in Solihull in the West Midlands. Are you planning to have any other cabs available to try? I only ask because I've been looking for a lightweight alternative to my backbreaking (but loud and great sounding) EBS cabs for a little while now. Russ (RussFM) has suggested the Super Twelves and I'd be really keen to try one of these in a gig setting. Thanks Tony
15.
Why oh why Tony???????????????????????????????????
Hi Nige, I know, I know! <COWERS AS HE GETS READY FOR THE BEATING> I gigged on Saturday night and was intending using it for the first time live but in the end I took the EBS rig. It sounds absolutely brilliant and is such a great lightweight powerful beast of an amp but I've realised it's just not for me. The usual breakup story I guess, "it's not you, it's just me". I've had the EBS for so long now (after several years of using valve amps), I've realised that a lot of "my sound" comes from not just my basses and me but also from my amplification. The Orange Bass Terror is such a fantastically brilliant amp but whilst I've got the EBS rig, I'm certain that I'm never gonna use it outside of home or a rehearsal studio. Yeah, my EBS gear is flippin heavy but who cares about load ins and outs when it sounds that good. Sorry mate. Feel like I've you down! T
16. Up for sale is my Orange Terror Bass head. It's sounds fantastic and is as loud as f*ck for such a small and portable head pumping out 500w into either 4 or 8 ohms. Brought only a few weeks ago, only been out the house twice to rehearsal. Never gigged, it's absolutely pristine and includes the dinky carry case and the original box. Sale preferred, looking for £390 plus postage (the only trades I'd be interested in is an EBS Proline 410 or a MIJ/CIJ Precision) Cheers Tony
17. "...notwithstanding soiled tolex and a couple of tears on the back..." Not surprising considering the weight of it and the noise it'd probably produce. Sounds like my kinda cab!
18. The Comfort Strapps are really really good. Had them for years, they grip really well and spread the weight of the heaviest bass. Super adjustable, I'm changing the length of mine a couple of times a gig. Super easy if that's a requirement. Can be had in various lengths. T
19.
Hi, I got the 40db attenuator from StudioSpares (only £4.34 + VAT), and that has done the trick. I used it on my little home mixer which only has mic level XLR inputs and I have not noticed any impact on the sound quality (sounded great with my headphones last night). From now on the 40db attenuator will live on the pocket of the Orange Bass Terror carry case, and should get me out of trouble if I ever have issues with the DI signal being too hot for some desks. Joao
Thanks to all for the heads up on the DI "problem". I've got the first outing of my Bass Terror at the end of the month and I've just ordered the attenuator from StudioSpares. Ultimately, better to have one just incase there's an issue. Tony
20.
Played mine through an EBS 410 at a gig a couple of weeks ago, it was the first time I had used it with a 4ohm cab, jeebus it was loud. I play in a folk band so I had to set the volume at lowest possible position where sound still comes out, even then I could only hear bass on stage.
Good to hear that as that's gonna be my rig for the next gig I do. I'll be using my Bass Terror with my EBS 410 running at 4Ohms and I'm so looking forward to how it'll sound in a gig setting. I'm pleased it's gonna be loud and punchy. Somehow I've managed to convince myself that using "only" a single 410 won't sound as full and loud as my usual two cabs!
21.
Should I sell my Ampeg SVT-3 pro for one of these things?
Erm, dunno really, I'd hate to say "yes" and you end up regretting. As with everything else, best to go and try one. All our tastes are difference. I've had a reasonable amount of valve gear in the past and I think I've fairly high standards. To me, the Bass Terror sounds great but it's always a pay off between absolute tonal nirvana and portability. In the Bass Terror's case, it's pretty pretty darn close IMHO. Whatever Orange have done, they've near enough perfected the balance between great valve tone and an amp so small, you could probably stick it in your pocket. I love the fact that I can just pick it up with one hand and get massive volume and a great valve crunch and grind. Ticks all the boxes near enough. Yeah, I still miss my the tone of my SVT II Pro and my Trace V8 but REALLY don't miss the weight and maintenance of them. Besides which, does the average punter coming to my gigs ultimately notice the subtle differences that we as musicians notice? Dunno. No one's ever come up to me after a gig and said so. Again, go give one a go. Nothing ventured, nothing gained and, to be honest, at the price, if you don't like it long term, you'll probably be able to sell it on without taking too much of a hit. HTH Tony
