Don't get me wrong, I don't think its a good idea to play w***ered, but I find between 4-6 pints means I enjoy myself a hell of a lot more.
...the big f***er is that I always have to drive to and from gigs. This limits alcohol intake dramatically!
I was reading somewhere that bass players often turn out to be the most accomplished all round musician in the band. Perhaps we are just quite cerebral people. I don't think I can claim any of that myself.
judgin for El Basho, we all seemed down-to-earth, decent guys. Defo no arrogance/egos/"LOOK AT MEE!!" types. Bassists rock, and chicks dig the low-end rumble, good sense of rhythm and strong, dexterous fingers...or so I've been told
How do you know this wasn't Wembly? Good advice though - not corny at all!
Cos I was playin there at the weekend (in my mind )!
I won't bore everyone with the details, but we played a gig along with another band over the weekend and to cut a log story short it hadn't been booked properly, the other band didn't know we where coming, the PA guy took a strop and I got *very* stressed out. The net result was that my playing went out of the window. All that stuff that was simple got very difficult because I was very tense. My question is, I suppose, what do you do to either stay or get relaxed for a gig? I get stressed very easily and it has a very bad effect on my playing.
I know it'll sound corny but I take a deep breath in, close my eyes, picture meself walking out onto the stage at wembly with a gazillion people cheering and the spotlights on me, then breath out, open my eyes and notice I'm at the local Dog&Duck and it all seems amusingly relaxed after that give it a shot, it might help!
New favourite sounds: My V-Type going through the Compact CK's Shuttle going through the Compact andyonbass' LH500 going through the Compact. Er. I like that cab!
It was a beast, that's for sure! How much are you costing them out at, Alex? I'd be interested in a light-but-loud sometime soon! -
That's a canny big difference.
He's making a good point, IMO...it might be the way that drums'll go in the next decade. You can picture it now...you'll have the guys who play Acoustic Drums to be a rare beast, with all the lugging/transport/space/soundlevel issues to deal with whereas the 'leccy kit users will just turn up with a big backpack and bundle of leads (as the technology get to be that portable) and they'll clip it all toegther in 3mins, plug straight into the FOH/monitors and be able to tweak their kits for funk, soul, rock, blues, jazz in an instant, and people'll remember "when they first started out, you had a drummer that took 45mins to set-up, blast all hell outta your ears for the duration of the set and take 45mins to de-kit..." in that nostalgic way.
We should flashmob the Bass Cellar and start trying everything out. That'd learn em.
yes, yes and a thousand times yes!! Dammit, we should do it, all say we're gonna buy the most expensive gear there, and do a massive slow jam of MustHang Sally!
I'm thinking of coming down tomorrow... I have some stuff up for sale on here, would it be considered bad form to bring it with me in case anyone fancies any of it? Being a 450 mile round trip it would be handy to offset the travelling costs if anyone bought any of it.
I have to admit, I'm bringing as much cash as I can...I've got a few debts to settle with a certain Crazy Antipodean among others, and I've got to get a hand in on that raffle I'm sure there's gonna be plenty of spare foldin' floatin around to have some of your stuff! Whatcha trying to shift? -

Help? My neck and shoulder is killing me.
phil_the_bassist replied to Skinnytwotimes's topic in Bass Guitars
I found it helped me to keep my back straight when playing the long sets...no more rock&roll poses/balls-out moshing cos that really f***s my neck/shoulders up! Now I take a leaf outta John Entwistles book, stand in the back and look bored
Yeah, what Dave Grohl said.
lol! -
Taking a day off at the pool in 30 degree Key West and plugged into my iPod. Bought a clutch of Mastercuts Funk albums with me and, apart from being great poolside music, there's some really cool bass grooves going on. Brass Construction, Ohio Players, Brothers Johnson, Kool, Dazz, Eddie Harris, Donnie Hathaway, Teena Marie etc, etc. Just waiting for the bar to open and my day will be perfect Although all this bass heavy stuff is making me miss having a bass around to play along
ahh, sounds like the life I can't wait to get home for that very reason! I've got some Sly&TFS lines I'm munchin thru, and a few new tracks for a band I'm now in that i've gotta learn, so it's gonna be BASSBASSBASS tonight happy f***ing days!
I hung my MM up on a hercules for ages and it was fine...
of course YMMV, but mine wasn't, now I don't hang it and I haven't needed to tweek the setup (except for after string changes) for about a year Merely something to consider, also it can't fall any further if it's sat in a stand on the floor! -
Overall the guitar market is overheated. There are alot of brands with very similar offerings often owned by either the Fender or Gibson cartels. Logic dictates that some brands will be rested, many were only recently revived for retro appeal. Setting yourself up as a luthier seems to be almost a middle-class pose in the UK and there are some very marginal back of garage operations (often in solid body electric guitars). I just hope that any contraction will preserve the real craftsmen with a different take on building. However the cynic in me expects buyers to gravitate to the safety of Js and Ps. Am looking for bass2 myself at present, just haven't found that perfect combo of looks and sounds...
as long as the high-end builders are able to keep their heads above water during this crunch, the lesser luthiers (one of which I have used many years ago, much to my chargrin) will eventually drop off to leave the ACG/shuker/RIM/sei et al of this world to operate in the the safe, high-end of the market. Judging by the Build Diaries thread, BC along should be keeping most of 'em funded nicely
