This is what I like to call "smell the fart" bass playing -
so, It looks like I may be able to start landing some gigs in the local theatre pits within the not-so-distant future, and having never done anything like this (apart from some charity stuff in a local village hall) I was really looking for some advice re. equipment and ettiquete/unwritten rules. I've already got: A reliable, well maintained bass Music stand& clip-on light good, noise free leads good, reliable, mutable tuner Will I need a small combi, or DI box, or will that be supplied usually? Any further advice/tips would be much apprieciated!
I've never seen anyone round here play a Warwick or an Ashdown (apart from when they've lent mine and a 5:15 combo)... Another peeve - bassists who turn up at a gig expecting someone else to have an amp they can use and the ones who f***ing moan at me because I wana set up the VU meter right so they dont blow the preamp... "Play as loud as you are going to during the gig" "HUH? What for?" I don't have to let you use my amp you little sh*t.
BIG +1! Then also the ones that bring their own sh*tty little crackly practice combo, see that you've got something that's actually SUITABLE and expect to plug into yours.

South East Bass Bash, Saturday 27th September: NEW INFO!
phil_the_bassist replied to silverfoxnik's topic in Events
I can't bloody wait! It sound like it's gonna be bloody good! -
Indeed. I have a while to try n rectify the situation. Seriously gassing tho, like you wouldn't believe. Out of bass slanging her choice of uni was cos I go there
Now, THAT'S dangerous. People choosin a Uni just to be with a someone is sketchy. YMMV, but NONE of the couples I know who went to the same uni (cos they wanted to be 'togevah') stayed the distance...and regretted having to face their ex at every night out on the pull. Be wary, good sir...there's gonna be plenty more GASsing before you finish Uni!

How much swapping of basses goes on here?
phil_the_bassist replied to Annoying Twit's topic in General Discussion
also, due to the 4k+ members, you'll find that second hand basses have been owned by BCers without your knowledge...I've got a Giannini Rickenfacker that I bought off ebay long before joining the forum, turns out it used to be a Chatter's! -
I was wondering why there's no date for london....then I remembered that there's no suitable venue for it anymore- no Bass Centre, no Soundcontrol...
there's the Bass Cellar... PFFFFT!! who am I kidding
I'm biding my time. I'll admire from a distance but it seems she plays better in my hands Infact I've been asked to take her out of her case again on Saturday
oooh, norty norty! I like it You have to be careful, as has been posted higher up, but if she fits well and you can play her better than her current owner then something has to be done to rectify the situation!

Look for basschatters bands in your area
phil_the_bassist replied to charic's topic in General Discussion
Good plan! Band: Bib Fortuna Type: Pub Rock Covers (G&R, Jimi, Bryan Adams, BonJovi etc etc etc, the usual stuff) Location: Newbury/Basingstoke Can do up to 3hrs straight, but usually have a break in the middle. V good if you want an evening of rock after an original set. Will get some tracks up on myspace once I get the lads into a studio. -
I see you like big black russian balls That joke was so bad i think i deserve to be banned....... on a less innunedo laden note, i didn't even know EHX made russian bassballs, does it sound any better than the american piece o' crap?
Having never tried the Yankee POC, I wouldn't know...but I'm pretty happy with the one I've got! Doesn't like my 'ray for some reason, and even with the sensitivity knob at its lowest setting it likes to make all kinda wierd noises, but with my Rickenfaker or any of my passive basses it Mwah's like a beaut!
love the shoes...will you be gigging in them?
for your sir, anything! I didn't notice them, trust you eagle eyed BCers to spot 'em! -
Post your pedal board - Basschat style!!
phil_the_bassist replied to dudewheresmybass's topic in Effects
This is the first incarnation of my pedalboard! It obviously still needs to be covered, but there's plenty of room for reshuffles and additions...and I need to talk to Obbm about gettin some leads and daisychain adapters to replace the cheapo leads and stop relying on batteries, but we're almost there! Not finalized the sequence yet, as I'm still experimenting with what does what to what so please don't flame me too bad! Jus' need a band that requires some effects now -
Which way to connect cabs and speakers?
phil_the_bassist replied to phil_the_bassist's topic in Amps and Cabs
Rather than the theoretical input that so many around here are better qualified than myself to offer I'm just thinking from a practicality point of view. Lead 1 from output to cab 1 Lead 2 from output to cab 2 lead 1 fails mid song - result = manageable drop in volume Lead 1 from output to cab 1 Lead 2 from cab 1 to cab 2 Lead 1 fails - result - total loss of volume then very possibly a bang and a smell of smoke. No contest to my mind. I'm assuming the amp delivers it's dogs into 4ohm and your 2 cabs are 8ohm each. Seems a fair assumption as you mention 2 amp outputs.
Good point, well made! Well, it SAYS they're both 8ohm outputs, but whether that changes if you put a cab on each output I have nooo idea! -
Which way to connect cabs and speakers?
phil_the_bassist replied to phil_the_bassist's topic in Amps and Cabs
Can your head run both those cabs? I would guess both are 4 ohms so you'd be running at 2 ohms. SS head ususally don't like that. - dunc
Hey Dunc! Well, the head's got two speaker outputs at 8ohms, and the speakers are rated at 8ohms...I'm not sure of the wiring configuration inside the head, but it doesn't say anything against using two cabs.
As Bill said though - unmeasureable and inaudible in all likelihood.
That's fair enough! I was just wondering if there was a secret trick to gettin more trouser flap! At least with the 4x10 back in action, the drummer can't complain about not hearing me! -
Morning! I've got two cabs running again, and was wonderin how to get the most outta 'em. My head's got two speaker outputs, and both cabs (one 2x15, one 4x10) have got a socket for an extension cab. I would usually just run off the speaker outs on the head, but is there any advantage (like more oomph/better response/power handling etc) to runnin one cab off the Ext.Cab. socket of the other? Cheers in advance! BTW, the gig is a real ale festival in Newbury, Berkshire...come along if you wanna get pissed on high strength homebrew
Basslab make a headphone amp that can be fitted internally, although I think it requires an extra hole to be drilled for another jack. Go to www.basslab.de and click on electronics-->bassxx head.
OOOOH! I like it! Esp cos my Ray's got the bigassed cavity cover over the front, I'll just have to knock a hole in some plastic rather than actually go at the body wood! Methinks I may pimp my ray for use as a practice bass Also the battery warning indicator sounds like a plan too! god, I'm spoilt for choice!
