I actually rather like tha p-bass  Though it's funny how the lights and sh*t probably cost more than the actual bass...
No, I stand up tall and proud when I say I think the shinyshiny "OOOh! Purdy Lights" bass is pretty f***ing awesome! Wouldn't spend more than £30 on it, but HELL YEAH!!! Nothing says TACKY better than neons...be it on a pug 106, or on a p-bass replica! *all opinions expressed in this post are the posters own, and probably do not represent the views of BC as a whole*

Yet ANOTHER Pedalchain Advice Type Thread.
phil_the_bassist replied to phil_the_bassist's topic in Effects
id put octaver first otherwise itl never track right, then id have the wah, then the rest
Just given it a shot, and found that the 8ver was lost after putting on any of the wetter FX on (it's not the best in the world, that's for damn sure!) and it fattens everything up when I put it at the end. The wah sounded cool, but again it doesn't make much difference after a few pedals are added :-( It seems to like the signal from the flange or bigmuff, it gets some good tones outta that. D'ya recon the rest is pretty sound then? I know that "what sounds best to you" is best, but these hints are a real help! -
OK, this chain sounds pretty good to me...I know some of the pedals could be upgraded, but until the behringer dies (so, in about a weeks time! lol!) this is what I've got! On the Barge Concepts VB-jr (Cheers Toasted!) effects loop: EHX Big Muff > EHX Bass Balls > DOD FX75-B Flanger > Morley Black&Gold Fuzzwah > Behringer UO100 Octaver: This is blended about 50/50 with clean, and it sounds goooood! Am I making any grave errors? Can you think of any obvious improvements? Cheers! *PTB*

yeah, since joining I've got 7 pedals, a coupla basses, a flightcase and a pickup, done some other swapsies and my bank balance quakes in fear every time I check the For Sale threads!
I think it says Made in Mexico on the back of the headstock.
That's what I can make out! Also, as has been stated above 'MZ' on the serial kinda hints to its origin too! -
My beautiful '91 is now in reading. I hope none of those more famous bassists play her
Ahh, just up the road then! You'll be fine mate, a good instrument's head shouldn't ever turn, no matter how long you leave 'em in the corner (of a tent)

I had the pleasure of buying Joe's Barge Concepts VB-jr, great comms, great shipping times and great to deal with! Cheers Joe!

help needed on buying a new bass
phil_the_bassist replied to ashgeezer's topic in General Discussion
In the current climate you can get a HELLUVALOTTA second-hand bass for your money. A 5string Musicman Stingray went for IIRC £550 on here recently. It's a buyers market, and if you've got the money, you're in luck! -
MORNING! *waves* Welcome to the Dark Side, please collect your goodiebag from the Kiosk, and Ped will show you to your room
bahaha, dear this thread does make me laugh.
damn right! I've noticed that the bottom end on my '85 always seems to tighten up when I power up my twin 15"ers and judging by coasterbass's posts I can understand why! can I get an Amen to two-handed lifts!
I turned over my pride and joy the other night to find an enormous gash. Gutted. I reckon the damage was caused when moving my 12" cab when I was a bit tipsy.
more coffee===>keyboard than ever before! Beautiful!
British with a bit of Spanish heritage. Needless to say that bottom end is something else
Amen to that! I'm sure she'll be highly sort after, take good care of her and you'll have a valuable investment in your hands in no time at all!
Indeed. I'm yet to give me '91 a play yet I'm looking forward to plugging in, although it could be some time haha
lol! I'm sure it'll rock your world! IMHO, as sweetly as she plays now, given a few years of bedding in ( ) she'll knock your socks off!
Met this man in the pub last night, showing pictures of a 2002 in natural. Told him I wasn't interested though.
Yeah, things need to be of a certain vintage before they can be appreciated in natural . I'm guessing it was one of the far east knock-offs anyhow. Defo not worth it!
I think the neckdive comment makes you the current leader in imaginative descriptives haha
lets just hope my '85 never sees this topic
Has anyone else had that moment when they pick up a different bass and everything just feels right? With all my basses. it's taken a while to get really comfortable. At last nights rehearsal, our guitarist brought along his Fender P Bass and after a couple of numbers I decided to put down my 'ray and give it a go. Everything about this bass just felt right instantly The feel, weight, tone, neck, strings, finger positions....everything! (The colour is a bit of a 'marmite' (love it/hate it) style with blue/pink flowers though) Regardless, it was instant mojo, instant GAS. Cheers, FP
well...if you're not gonna need your 'ray no more...i can think of a really nice home for it I totally understand what you mean, it's like when I played my 'ray for the first time (i remember it well ) and everything just clicked!

I've got a stunning fireglo '85, she's taken a few knocks from previous keepers so I needed to gently restore her to her former glory. She's got a few mods, not as many as I've seen, but tastefully done nonetheless...her control cavity is immaculate, her inputs a good tight fit, all her knobs and buttons respond as they should. She's got an incredible tight bottom, gorjus mids and her top's impressively rounded she loves fingerstyle, but give the low end a tweek and she responds very well to a bit of slap. You can play her all night long without gettin tired, and I've never found the excessive neckdive a problem

Audacity / Soundclip download help
phil_the_bassist replied to phil_the_bassist's topic in How do I?
re getting the effects to work: it's usually as simple as i) make a selection, and ii) apply the effect. If you want an effect on a whole track, you must first select the whole track. (At least, this is how it used to be. In the version I have on my Linux machine here (1.3.4 beta) it now selects the whole track if there was no selection first.). I think the "loop section" option you're after is the one called Effects / Repeat in the menu. If you want more specific help, you're going to have to tell us what you are doing, and what is happening. All you've done so far is tell us what isn't happening.
veeeeery good point! The Wav files are the clips in our very own BC Groove Library...if I double click, they open in a new window and I can play 'em once thru but there's no looping/downloading available. and as for the effects, i think I was just being a complete 'tard, as it all seems to be working now! Cheers for the help BNT, apologies for the dumbassed questions! -
Hey! I'm having some trouble downloading the wav files. it just downloads a file labelled 'Index' and not the sound clip. I'm using a mac, if that makes any difference... Also, I've just downloaded audacity, but can't work out how to get the EFFECTS to work, nor can I loop a sample. I can cut& paste as many times as i want, but surely there's a "loop section" shortcut? Any help would be gratefully recieved!

Zen and the art of bass tone
phil_the_bassist replied to stonecoldbass's topic in General Discussion
No, it's not about making the kick drum and the bass sound the same, it's about making sure that they work well together. In simple terms, if the kick drum is tuned really tight and punchy then it's better to e.q. the bass guitar frequencies lower to provide the warmth and low end.. And vice-versa of course.. Obviously, there's more too it than that but it's about these important elements in the rhythm section working together in a complimentary way.
That's alright then! Glad i hadn't got the wrong end of the stick! -
'let's go try one out at a store and then buy it for 50 quid less online' routine, that's one of the big reasons they don't like to let people try unless they really do want to buy...
Definately, that's something that's killing the stores, fo sure. BUT They're just shooting themselves in the foot...if a shop didn't let me play, or did but were arsy about it then I'd take my wedge o' cash elsewhere (and probably online!)
Yea yea I know. I'm feeling pretty thick right now. But then again I've never done any music theory..
precisely! so don't fret! it'll form the BASSis of your introduction to music theory (I just really wanted to get those puns in there... ) but you now know a shitload more about music theory than my rhythm guitard... for example, we (the lead guitard, singer and I) usually like to muck him about by asking if he wants this played in Eb or D# etc etc...still gives us a resolute and long considered answer and has yet to cotton on! The thing I'm still strugglin to get my head round are the modes, but that'll come in time I recon -
