i realise this is a broad subject but i'm just interested in a few opinions / ideas from people who know more about the subject than me. i just need to be pointed in the right direction. i've been learning on a yamaha rbx and the more i learn, the more i notice that i'm starting to outgrow it. my 2 main problems are: the tone on the yamaha is weak (strings sound a bit dead even when brand new and the sustain is fairly non existent), and the chunky pickups have thumbrest 'gaps' built into them in a way that makes it awkward to shift my thumb down to the e string. i've learnt the floating anchor technique with this bass but that first shift down is still always annoying. (other rbx users will know what i mean) so now i've started looking around for something new, and will spend a bit of time looking around for new/used deals. things i'm looking for: 4 string with a decent clean tone with a bit of growl and lots of sustain, low action, and a fairly modern sound and look. i'm still learning and can't really justify something amazing and hi-end, i'm happy to look at active/passive, i love the way vintage fender p's sound but i'm not so keen on how they look, but that's just a minor issue, tone and playability are the main issues. is £500 about the right amount? what brands should i look out for / avoid? am i likely to get an amazing deal second hand or do you always get what you pay for? any advice is welcome, thanks in advance.
Personally, IMHO, knowing what I know now I would go for a 2nd hand Musicman SUB...they're bombproof, you get all the circuitry of the Stingray for an Nth of the price and with the current economic climate you can probably find one well within your budget.
Well I just sold my amp and cab as I can't use them at the moment and really haven't done so for the last 3 years or so. Who knows, when I get back to playing live again, I'll have to get a couple of really huge cabs and a stupidly powerful head..... Here's the latest pics from Alan at ACG of the slotted fingerboard. Please bear in mind that this pic is taken before the sanding and polishing stages !! There's still a fair way to go yet
No, that's not a fingerboard....THAT is a beautifully figured landing deck for the new super-aircraft carrier that can launch jumbo-freakin-jets!! IT"S MASSIVE!!!!! ...Just how goddamn BIG are your hands?! Do you communicate with the pachyderm population of africa!? also...
I hear that lead divers boots are required to be worn before striking a low F#. This prevents the vibrations moving the UK further away from continental europe. I think the low F# (might even take it to low E) will be great for bolstering lines on the E on a regular 4 string.
Would shifting from continental europe really be that much of a bad thing..?

Good Price for '93 Stingray 3eq?

I'll keep you posted, it'll be goin into the porn section if I get it! -
Would a BadAss fit a stingray?
phil_the_bassist replied to budget bassist's topic in Repairs and Technical
hell, if it;s only a project, and only an old SUB body, go for it! if it doesn't work, c'est la vie, if it works, you'll have a Badassed SUB (lame attempt at a joke there!) Then, if it doesn't work, you can sell the bridge to me for a hugely discounted price -
ladies and gentlemen...may i present the pookbass

What would you guys say would be a good ballpark for a tidy '93 stingray? I've seen someone asking for £700, but I think it's a bit rich...what say you?
No, that's the second round - winners of that punch up play the winners of the first, then there's a play off for 3rd place. Shuker, Jaydee, Overwater, ACG, RIM etc and other custom build owners just stand back and disapprove a bit whilst nursing their Campari & sodas - but they're a funny lot................
That good, as long as there's a system in place! -
With the 500 watt version it's imperative to use a flux capacitor -
But then, if you're playin at 88mph with a 1.21 gigawatt amp, won't you travel back in time..?

Ok, here's something that'll probably divide opinion: I'm pretty much self-taught when it comes to slap...I'm not great but I can grove it (I can jam out most Flea lines, and Rio Funk's no problem). I've watched some technique vids on t'interweb where the slapper smacks thru the string and ends up resting their thumb on the string below...aka slap the E, thumb ends up on the A. This differs from my technique as I use my thumb like a hammer, and bounce it off the string to get the slap. If I try the other method, it just ends up sounding like I'm strumming the string with my thumb, and I get all tangled up. No crisp slap at all! So, what do you guys do, why can't I do both, and am I a complete numpty? (and before you ask: No, I'm not a gratuitous slapper, no, I don't slap in every song regardless of whether it needs it or not, no I don't slap in music shops! This is purely for my own bass based futherment. Read [topic="23428"]this topic[/topic] if you want further explaination!)

The natural wood jazzer is a thing of incredible beauty! I've fallen especially hard for the bridge...mmmmmm!

+1! good plan, defo would love to see some of the wierd/wonderful/unique/stunning gear that BC forumites own!

That's gonna look freakin BEAUTIFUL! Now, I've gotta know...when you hit the low F#, how much does the continental plate you're standing on shift? Are ERBers responsible for the tsunami/earthquakes of recent years!? I can't wait to see that facing go on the body with the spalted fingerboard, it's gonna be a helluva bass, that's for sure!
