  1. Do you want full-range monitors for large, loud stages or smaller vocal only monitors? If the latter, look at the TC Helicon FX150 or Mackie SRM150 (both around £200). For larger, high volume situations, many of the compact powered wedge shaped PA cabs will work (I have 4 HK Premium Pro 10s that do a good job for me). Anything decent won't be cheap, though. You get what you pay for as always.
  2. Means little. At the age of the band members quoted (40-60), people come and go all the time. If anything, it's a good sign - probably decent players who have other options.
  3. That's the starting bid, not a buy it now, price. I'd expect it to be bid up considerably. We see quite a few "Bargain on eBay" threads for starting bid prices. They never sell for that in the end.
  4. I agree with Stevie and Bill. Could the answer be that these cabs can handle the output of a typical "800W" amp, because that amp is only actually capable of delivering a burst of that wattage at a narrowly defined frequency range and over a few milliseconds? An amplifier that could deliver 800W RMS continuously over a wide range of frequencies would smoke them, but that doesn't happen in the real world because such a beast probably doesn't exist. As stated above, watts alone are pretty meaningless. Some manufacturers, such as Naim Audio (before you say it, I appreciate that they don't design kit for musicians), rate amplifiers on their ability to deliver current, rather than wattage. Would that be a more realistic measure?
  5. Nice. I've been promising myself a Cub when I have spare funds. I have several PJB cabs already. Been thinking I could use the Cub and slave it to a power amp to drive additional cabs.
  6. Agree with those who say what's the harm in enquiring further. What do you have to lose by meeting and checking them out, especially if you have nothing else on the go?

You can pick them up used very cheaply on eBay. Not the last word, but will do the job.
  8. Know what you mean. However, you can pick up a small used passive mixer for next to nowt on eBay. Some are about the size of an iPad. You don't need sophisticated eq or 24 channels. Worth a thought?
  9. Impossible to say what might be a fair price. Depends on condition, etc. A full set of valves will not be cheap. If a transformer is u/s, that will be an expensive fix. Are you being asked to make an offer? If the cab has been in a shed for 20 years, the drivers will likely have got damp, so could need replacement, too. Would you be able to get it from the seller and take it to a tech' for an informed opinion before agreeing to buy or making an offer?

It was always advised not to cut guitar strings (unless you bend them first), but on bass strings, the winding does not normally extend to the very end because if it did, it would be too fat to fit on or into the tuner. So they shouldn't be a problem. I never have trouble cutting mine and I have to with E and sometimes A strings or they won't fit on the tuner post.
  11. I did it on several occasions, but always went back to the day job. Now I'm an old git, I'm glad I did as I've ended up with my own place and a pension.
  12. Do you have a mixing desk? If so, you can plug the MP3 player or whatever and your bass into that and use headphones. It means you can practice at any time and not wake/annoy family or neighbours. Even a basic mixer will do the job fine.

  16. I made no assumptions about peoples' skills and tastes. I also said it's a free country. People can like/dislike whatever they choose. I don't care. At least take issue with what I actually said.
  17. Session will still repair/refurbish their amps. They're still going strong.
  18. Paul Simon is a very fine guitar player. I saw S&G back in the day when they were up and coming and he's no slouch. As for songwriting, there is a technique to it. It ain't just "letting it all hang out, maaaan". A well crafted song is a well crafted song. I'm surprised you use Paul Simon as an example. He knows how to write a song. He isn't just tooling around. Listen to his stuff critically. It's very well put together.
  19. There's a sort of defensiveness one encounters during discussions of this sort. It goes along the lines of "Ah yes, they may be great players, but it's soulless/instrumental widdling/lacking in cojones/high quality elevator music, etc, etc". If you don't like something, just say you don't like it. It's a free country. If you feel threatened by highly accomplished playing, work on your technique.
