Stripping a gloss finish from a guitar. Thoughts?
funkyjimbob replied to funkyjimbob's topic in Bass Guitars
Totally does not need an expensive refin - Geek99's pot scourer suggestion will have exactly the same result, with the advantage that if you (or a subsequent owner) wants to re-gloss it, you can do that with T-Cut & elbow grease. You'll also find a matt finish - however it's achieved - will very quickly gloss up with use, meaning use of the pot scourer is a useful skill to have! Jon.
Thanks for the advice.. The only issue here is I am not very 'hands-on' with bass DIY stuff and the thought of myself going at a £8500 bass with a scourer isn't really appealing to me if I'm perfectly honest. -
Funny old world... I have a natural finish Thumb that has to be waxed. Once waxed it does look absolutely stunning, but it is a pain to do. I would quite happily have a high-gloss finish whacked on it... possibly at some cost to the tone. Assuming you're not as idle as I am when it comes to waxing, I'd go for a natural or oiled finish rather than a satin finish. My reasoning... if you're going for something different (and expensive) you may as well go the whole hog... you may regret a half-assed solution in six months time. As I hinted at... you may also get a change in tone... which will probably be to your liking if you're already a Warwick fan... the sound of wood and all that! It's not as drastic as it sounds, as a sax player I know of players who used to have the lacquer stripped off their horns for improved tone (but nowadays plenty are sold lacquer free)
I have had many natural oil Wicks in the past and have always kept them waxed and in good condition. Both this one and my buckeye Streamer stage 1 have the high gloss and I just think it take's away from the aesthetics and the tone has definitely suffered too. They are not as 'growly' as you'd expect from a Warwick. -
Why? It looks totally amazing as it is. Have you considered that a refin may affect the value of a premium bass?
Yes. I never intend on selling this bass and as stated in the original post I prefer non-gloss finishes. Buckeye burl looks so much nicer unglossed. Here's proof: -
Hi! I am thinking of having the high-gloss stripped from my Warwick custom shop as I don't like the look of high-gloss at all. I have been given the option of satin (expensive) or oil-based finishes for it. Has anyone had this done before and can offer advice as to why I should or shouldn't do this? Here is the bass in question:

Paid for the pedal last Friday and was assured it would be posted this week. Haven't received anything other than a message saying it would be posted this week on Tuesday... Is this normal? Seems a bit ridiculous that he hasn't shipped it yet!! (almost a week after) -
Steve bought my Comfort Strapp off of me. Very quick payment and great communications. Would not hesitate to recommend.

Yeah, I think I'm losing my mind. I paid through Paypal in the end so mine will hopefully be here next week! -

Used the new Gruv Gear SoloStrap Neo 4" last night for an hour or so at jam night and have to say it's amazing. I didn't know I had the bass on. It's wider than the Comfort Strapp and is definitely more comfortable. I paid £55 total in the end from the US including Import duty and can safely say it's worth it. -

Sorry I meant import duty into the UK. I'm sure I've ordered from Hungary before and been charged at customs. -
They stopped using Paypal because they end up paying a lot more in fees I assume. I am not a fan of Paypal, it's convenient but they've messed me about a few times and they are not quick to act. For example, once I had over £600 in my Paypal account (I had just sold a couple of things and didn't bother to transfer the cash to my bank as I was going to use it again), and used Paypal to pay for a beautiful 5-string g&L L2500. However, I was in Spain at the time. Paypal realised my location had changed and blocked the account. Fair enough, they are serious about security. You'd imagine that a phone call followed by an email perhaps providing some kind of id or whatever would fix the matter, right? Good luck with that. It took me over a week for my payment to be accepted and for me to have access to my account again. Remember my account wasn't empty either. If this happens with a bank it gets sorted immediately. Good luck trying to fix anything quickly with Paypal. They're the experts at stalling. Now, Transferwise... I had never used it before I had to pay for my Future Impact pedal, but I just signed up, entered the details they asked (mine and recipient's), and that was it. I don't remember any code of any kind I paid with funds from my bank, using my bank card (Visa debit)... not sure if paying as a bank transfer changes matters. If your bank card is a debit card (likely) I'd use that as the result is the same, but it was definitely straight forward when I used it.
Thanks for the reply. Did you pay any duty? They told me to use Transferwise to find a code then use my online banking software and that code to make the payment which ha got me a bit confused to be honest. -

Has anyone else been confused with the payment method they are offering? Mine is ready but I can't for the life of me work out what they are trying to make me do? I signed up for Transferwise and followed their instructions but they are saying about using the code I am given by Transferwise to make payment using my online banking? Any ideas? They have stopped using Paypal for some stupid reason. Also, is there import duty to pay from an item sent from Hungary? -
I got a comfort strapp from Bass Direct. Never gonna look for another strap ever again! If this one wears out or is lost, ill just buy another one. It distributes the weight very well, and it has a little give in it which gives he bass the illusion of being lighter
I've used a Comfort Strapp for years but it just doesn't seem to be doing the job anymore. This new strap is a wider so hoping this will really help. Haven't gigged it yet but when I've tried it at home I don't even know the bass is on my shoulders! Got a jam night tonight so will give it a whirl then. -

The strap turned up yesterday but haven't had a chance to give it a whirl and I haven't got a gig in a few weeks now. Will update as soon as I have. -

The strap still hasn't arrived yet so can't give any first impressions. I ordered it from the US 2 weeks ago so hopefully any day now. -
