1. It’s just click bait marketing to keep the interest up for new users. The actual lesson content on the site isn’t like that.
2. “I said to the gym instructor: ‘Can you teach me to do the splits?’ He said: ‘How flexible are you?’ I said: ‘I can’t make Tuesdays.'”
3.
I used to use Monster Cables until I found out that Phil Jones Bass did not recommend them for use with their gear...
That's really interesting. I use a PJB double 4 with Monster cable alot. What was the issue?
4. The audio claims are marketing fluff, the main priority is hard wearing dependability. My 7yr old Monster cable still going strong after systematic abuse.. will give OBBM a whirl when it fails.

6. Some of the questions you're asking are down to personal preference, and it's unlikely you'll buy 'the keeper' until you've worked out the answers yourself through getting some hours in. For me two key questions are

Lined or Unlined.
JJ or PJ. Active or Passive. A dance as old as time, all answers valid but entirely your taste.
Fingerboard woods, neckthrough are less of an issue. Strings - flats, rounds, tapes all good. Again, depends on the music, taste, weather and mood.. I started on the excellent Squier VM Jazz fretless. £230 or so. Great instrument, and got me through a lot of jazz gigs no problem. It was only through playing for that for a while that I was able to work out my preferences.
7. Big fan of 760FLs but wouldn’t say they are that ‘clanky / middy’ .. Have you tried Tapewounds? I like them for the clank / twang / mid edge over flatwounds. D’addario 50-105 worth a look.
8. “I rang up my local swimming baths. I said: ‘Is that the local swimming baths?’ He said: ‘It depends where you’re calling from.'” Bump!
9. Rhetorical question really.. Like most of us on here, amazed at how modern production has revolutionised bass building. My Jack & Danny bass, £90 in 2016, on par with my £500 Washburn from 1990 (£794 in today's money..!). Lots of cheap crap accessories out there though - Amazon specials - cheap and nasty tuners, patch cables, gigbags..
10. Bought new from Bass Gallery, London. I went in looking at jazz's and walked out with this Things that won me over - The neck! Standard jazz width 38mm nut, but more shallow than a Fender C profile, light satin finish, fast and comfortable. Without too much hyperbole, for me one the best necks I've played. I recently had a custom build, and based the neck on this. Great woods, Babicz bridge, bartolini pups, hipshot ultralights - very well specced for the money More unusual finishes do polarise opinion, but IMHO the woods on this look beautiful, (and arguably much nicer in the flesh/wood..) Sounds great of course, lots of reviews online - here's Dood of this parish waxing lyrical https://youtu.be/Z7lKZfALprY Condition very good. Never gigged, home use only. Few minor buckle scratches, nothing I can bring out in a photo. The gold finish on the front pick up volume and the bridge has started to age gracefully where it's been touched - actually think this looks quite nice (and again can't photo well..). Recent set up by Bass Gallery, with new Elixirs, about 10 playing hours ago.. Price includes packaging and courier to (reasonable) mainland UK. Can post further at additional cost. I'm in SE8, happy to meet you halfway if you're in London. Standard manufacturer blurb; Rithimic Series is designed and inspired by Jeff Berlin, created by Cort. Jeff Berlin is known as one of the greatest bass players in the world and is also considered one of the finest clinicians in music. Cort Guitars and Jeff Berlin have collaborated to release the Jeff Berlin bass since 2014. Jeff's basses have always been simple and vintage inspired, but then tweaked to his exact specifications to make them something special. The Rithimic provides that same balance between vintage, simple and well evolved for today's playing demands. The bass features an alder body with a beautiful exotic wood top. Outfitting the body are a pair of Bartolini Jeff Berlin custom soapbar pickups, a Babicz Full Contact Hardware bridge, one volume control, one balance control, one tone control, passive electronics, and gold hardware. The hard rock maple neck is complemented with a rosewood fingerboard and four inline headstock featuring Hipshot Ultralight tuners. "After playing the same bass for so many years I was not sure that another builder could develop something that I would love. As soon as I played the very first Cort Rithimic bass, I was wowed. I could not believe how perfectly this bass turned out. This is an astonishing instrument that Cort has built for me." ALDER BODY WITH SPALTED MAPLE AND PADOUK TOP Custom designed body with the beautifully visualised Spalted maple and Padouk top make you try to play the bass. The alder body has its own unique clarity and brightness. BARTOLINI Jeff Berlin CUSTOM SOAPBAR PICKUPS The only one existing Dual Coil Humbucker pickups for neck and bridge designed by Jeff Berlin offer warm, deep tones with a piano-like low end. The pickups are a split coil design with a well-defined magnetic field aperture for maximum clarity and tonal response. BABICZ FCH5 GOLD BRIDGE The full contact hardware technology results in an increased dynamic range, increased sustain, pitch stability. String action and intonation adjustments remain secure, even when removing strings. HIPSHOT ULTRALIGHT TUNERS The Rithimic is equipped with Hipshot Ultralight Tuners (classic 20:1 tuning ratio) that is made of cast zinc with aluminium strings posts and mounting nuts, resulting in 30% weight reduction over other regular tuners and which results in improved balance and tuning accuracy. 11.
What pickup would give me the closest to old school/Motown?
The ‘vintage copy’ Aguilars worth a look, both single coil and split. They do a 1960’s and ‘70s version. 60’s split coil, passive, with flats - would be getting you close
12. For many ‘big name band’ bassists, their love of bass comes first - and quite likely has included discovering funk, jazz, Jaco etc. Then one day their next audition turns into a massive success, and a band playing fairly anodyne music has a great bassist barely out of first gear. Listened to the SBL podcast with the bassist from The Coors of all things, that was his story. Also Sandy Beales in 1D ..
13.
I'm intrigued to see whether that's something they'll address if/as and when they get round to a deluxe reissue. ..but it's been a bit of a thing for Justice since it was released. It'd be a real opportunity missed if they ignore it
Alas won’t happen, the original tapes have deteriorated so much. Interesting interview with Rasmussen explaining his frustrations https://youtu.be/lmFgeFh2nlw
14.
And it's always been the case that the best musician in Metallica is the bass player.
+1, and always the most credible. RT joining a band as naff as they’d become - great commercial move from Lars, and lottery win for a seemingly decent guy and monster player.
15. If you're set on Jazz, the Squier VM is a great bass for the money. Seems VM range quality control is high, there's not much between that and full fat Fender. Been gigging with mine for past year, can't fault it.
16. ACS ER20 off the peg are decent enough. For anything where the dynamics matter, customs are best option. Reed Audio are great, similar price point to custom ACS and it seems, Specsavers..
17. On its way from Germany, with me Friday. 10 wks to build, but only 6 wks since the final tweak. Patient man is Adrian..
18. They've really nailed the online configurator, the best of any manufacturer / luthier. I've got one on it's way and can't help speccing another.. Be interesting to know how many hits it gets, and what % make it through to orders..
19.
I was tempted with the pjb double four but I wasn't convinced the battery solution was very neat?
Battery solution is a doddle, just sorted all this myself. £50 laptop battery, small and even looks quite smart. Can max out the amp for 2/3hrs easy. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/30-000mAh-External-Battery-LAPTOP-POWER-BANK-Backup-Pack-Phone-Laptops-Tablet/122477559464?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649 Double4 not cheap but it's a fantastic piece of kit.
20.
I've read that when playing a lined fretless that you should play on the fret lines as opposed to between them like on a regular fretted bass.. Am I thinking about this correctly or is there a flaw in my theory I'm on the verge of pulling the trigger on a lined fretless.
Don't re-tune your bass and avoid all open strings, just position your bass 1cm to the left. Definitely take the plunge and buy it, you might find it easier than you think, but you won't know until you try.
21. My brother is a pro keys player - 95% of his working life is travelling or hanging around waiting. His view has always been successful pros are the ones you're just happy to hang out with. He's got a many bitter 'pro' acquaintances who are continually bemoaning why X or Y got a particular job when 'they're no better player than me' - not really getting this bitterness is part of the issue.. Sounds like the OP's 'pro' is in this camp.
22. Sellers 'other items' are the usual Cash Converters generation game of fenced gear..
23. Bought a pedal from Chazz. As mint as billed, arrived rapidly very well packaged. Like buying from a shop, only cheaper. Maximum recommendations
24. Great quote from the man himself > 'The bass player is like the king in chess. He doesn't move much, but when he does he changes everything'
Refretting wouldn't be difficult or expensive, and you'd then have a superb, lightweight travel bass. Being active, you might even get away with plugging headphones into the output socket. Way overpriced at £395, but not a piece of crap IMHO. Do bear in mind that I may be biased. I own http://s1128.photobucket.com/user/h4ppyjack/library/Basses%20CURRENT/Westone%20The%20Rail%201985%20CURRENT
What a unit! Is that pickup on rails?
