1. Yes, just done this. Very easy. Used DPD through Parcel2go, took 4 days, £20 courier (plus opted to pay £25 insurance).
2. If you draw a blank - I've just used a guy who transcribed some complex piano parts for me from the audio, into notation. Was good value (IMO), £25 for a 5min track. Happy to pass on his details.
3. " if you've been on the hunt for a Fender you will no they are like ford escorts, they are every where and finding a great one isn't to easy and with all the cross referencing you have to do is a nightmare I've found , this one is fab and its been checked and verified by fender " ford escorts?! cross-referencing?! Peace of mind to know it's Fender verified though.
4. It's less the random photo, and more the person who decides to film an entire song, or songs - esp on an iPad. Nothing a well aimed 2p can't fix.
5. Joined a one-off band for a friends party - we're doing Theme from Minder - hugely satisfying to play.
6.
I have a small effects board, consisting of tuner, EBS Compressor and Sansamp DI. I'd like to add a chorus, some kind of distortion/fuzz, later probably an envelope filter and an octaver. I tried one, the effects and amp simulations sound quite usable on headphones but I had mixed feelings when I played it on an amp.
For what you want to use it for, the B3 will do a great job. Having used one live for the last few months, you're right to say that not all the FX translate that well once volumes are boosted - but obviously this can be the case for any pedals, and no multi FX is going to excel everywhere. I regularly travel on tube to rehearsals, and it beats the weight of multiple pedals.
7. Didn't realise Alan also made symmetrical necks? That was only bit I didn't like
8. You need to kill her first. Pre-emptive strike
9. Every site out there is moving away to free text search, would be a backward step for BC to start dividing listings. Filters are a non starter. You'd either need to parse the ads, or fill in a form at posting. It would take BC beyond the £20 listing sub, and it would break. Massive headache!
10. Cool. Why is this your perfect P ?
11. I've noticed tight touring bands are often more supportive around the solo bass - I assume because they know eachother's phrasing better / they're comfortable they're not stepping on toes. Whenever there's a bass solo at a jazz jam, it is a total abandon. As a relative newcomer to jams I've passed on solos before as didn't feel confident enough with that tune, to take the exposure. I suppose - echoing Mike - should really just give the band a steer to how I'd like to hear it.
12. 'I only went in for a gig bag..' Dangerous place Bassgear! How great to see it mid build as well. Enjoy
13.
Some of these comments belong in the Bad Yolks thread...
Eggsactly what I was thinking
14.
It's looking like about £80 a track. I only know as much about him as his website and the demos on it. Happy to hear of any recomendations?
£80 a track sounds alot for what will be a demo that gets overwritten. Loops does sound like the best idea. Depending on how tightly you've recorded the instrumental parts, it should be straightforward to layer some homemade loops on top of this. If you were having issues getting this to fit, there's a lot of friendly DAW types on BC that could help you out here I'm sure.
15. He shagged my mate's sister as well. The man is full of surprises
16. J&D are great value basses for the money, but even with new strings and tweaked set up, you might still find yourself wanting more Jazz oomph, and this would then come down to the pickups. Really depends how much time and money you feel is worth investing, or do you put this towards a new bass.
17.
JTUK and Spacey may be onto something here - maybe it's the influence of dance music, which seems to be in a cock-waving competition about how low it can all go. Mega sub-bass may sound impressive on kick drums (if you like that kind if thing), but for a pitched instrument ? I dunno - I'm not a sound engineer, but as has been said on other threads, the treatment of the bottom end for live events does IMHO sound awful to what it used to. But then I'm getting to be an old gimmer, so it was all better in the past wasn't it ?
Nowadays it's a club where you'll hear the best bass definition through a PA. Since Funktion-One became industry standard, volume in watts is down and clarity had gone up - but I guess these are smaller spaces. Hasn't live bass forever been a mixed bag?
18. Nut width and neck profile. Although pet hate - worst offence in a music shop, worse than a bad set up, is a sticky bass. A demo model that feel like it's been played by a 4yr old.
19. I'm with you on the Kala / noodling. Sounds like a nice way in. J&D Micro Jazz also a great option. Short enough for a 6yr old, only £75.
20. Teachers of traditional orchestral instruments will be used to teaching kids from 5-6, they'll be able to bring them on without putting them off. Might be more of a challenge finding an electric bass teacher willing / capable of this. My mum is a violinist and frequently had pupils start at this age. By the time they get past grade 8 they can be off to the Royal Academy, but some are completely sick of it and abandon the instrument entirely. Have to be prepared that starting them really young is essentially your choice, not theirs.
21.
All makes sense, except that rosewood is definitely more dense and less 'spongey' than maple. I know this from having worked with both woods a fair bit. A quick Google confirms this; density of maple = 39-47 lb/ft3, density of Rosewood = 50-55 lb/ft3 Edit: strangely enough, despite being more dense, rosewood is more porous. No Idea how this has a bearing on tone
..and then we're getting into alder v ash bodies
22. Great clip, not seen that before. His bands always look so drilled, and slightly scared.
23. Are we talking rosewood or maple fretboard?
