1. Great thread. Wish I'd had this when I started out. Can I also add the benefits - for some people at least - of 'in person' training to help demystify the computer element. Coming at it completely green, the DAW seemed daunting, and YouTube tutorials a mixed bag. I found it hugely beneficial attending a crash course (a weekend at PointBlank in London, but these exist across the country). Having someone there to ask questions of in the very early stages, and working through live examples, got me up to pace quickly and confidently, and most importantly, helped me understand what questions I needed to ask.
2. Thank you thank you - damn this forums got some helpful people on it! I've got my studio engineer contact booked in for next week, loading up a stack of these. I'm working through all your Soundclouds too - really interesting - will post a link to mine shortly.
3.
Just as an aside, it may well be that your favourite bass tone (particularly if it's recorded) will also have lot to do with the sound of the desk and other ancilliary gear in the studio, the whims of the producer and engineer on the day and a hundred other parameters... just sayin'.
+1. So true. Also, no matter how objective I try and be about 'tone' - every record where I love the bass tone, I also love the music. Be interested to hear who loves a bass tone on a track they hate?
4. It's a documentary, a labour of love funded by Robert Trujillo >> http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/music/2014/09/18/metallica-robert-trujillo-jaco-pastorius-documentary/15678819/
5.
only if you dont say it like the Yanks 'Jarko' ...whats that all about ?
yeah that new film will be full of it
6. Excellent, thanks, will give that a whirl
7. Is it too much of a cliche to say Jaco? His sound on Heavy Weather.. (esp the vinyl!)
8. Had a hunt but couldn't find this answered elsewhere - what (paid-for or otherwise) plug-ins do you swear by? I'm a big fan of Sausage Fattener, can work miracles in the mix. Do you have any go-to plug-ins you always use, or anything interesting worth checking out? (FWIW running Live8 / Mac)
9. Cheers for posting Paul - not a bad tune, really enjoyed the second half. Pushes the boundaries a bit for chart stuff, certainly beats alot of other dross out there
10. BBC4 Sunday night double bill
11. Hi Dread - hows the build going? Really intregued to see how it's progressed !
12.
...and what about Warwicks? well seeing as I can't find anywhere in the UK to try them-how does that work as a marketing strategy? I love their old stuff but have no idea on their new kit.
It's a pretty arrogant strategy from Warwick. Jack up the pricing and force dealers to buy outright? Was genuinely up for buying a new one but didn't want to plunge straight in without at least trying something current. GAK in Brighton are meant to be a flagship importer / dealer, but they can't risk carrying the £3-4k guitars as unsold stock, so don't carry any.
13. Thanks Discreet
14. Partly city rents as well, which put a greater pressure on going after the lowest common denominator (hence banks turning into pubs turning into coffee shops, etc). Push further out into the sticks, and there's often more going on per pub. Less other stuff going on so people turn out for it.
15. Cheers all. Yeah I've been slapping for years and thought I've got the wrist 'roll' down, no movement past the elbow. I've recently increased the amount though, maybe just doing too much too soon, possibly not relaxing enough (ironic as like many of us I play to unwind after a day at work). JTUK completely agree on height - obviously practice a lot sat down, and when standing, the bass sits about 2inches lower.
16. Been honing in on slap technique recently, and started getting aches and 'flashes' down outside of arm / along top of right shoulder (I'm right handed). Conscious every practice session is not doing it any favours, but being the belligerant sod, don't really want to scale back. Aside from the usual 'playing' warm ups, can anyone recommend any worthwhile 'non-instrument' stretching that has worked for them? (any good online resources out there?)
17. Hi Madshadows , hi Allie
18.
34" scale tuned down to DGCF, capo at second fret and you have a 30.3" scale EADG bass.
< love this idea
19. It's great to see him on the BBC doing this, and not hamming it up in that 'God only knows' ad(!). The Sound City film he made was brilliant as well (and a half decent album)
20. Hi all. Searching for a luthier recommendation I came across this great looking forum. I've been playing for 20 odd years, recently rekindled as I bought my first J bass (why did I wait so long?!). Mainly studio stuff but starting to gig again. Hoping this forum can help with my continual learning, and I'm sure it will fuel my GAS.
