Here's a difficult question for you lot... Which smaller compressor, The Cali, The Ego, The Warden, etc sounds most like the Empress? I love my Empress but it's quite a big unit and I love the idea of going smaller. ta
I cant speak for the others but the Cali isn't that similar to the Empress, it has a fairly distinctive flavour where as the stand out thing about the Empress is its transparency, I loved my old Empress particularly that it went down to 2:1 ratio, again quite different to the Cali which is around 5 to 1 minimum I believe? Both are killer units but a little different. I think the Darkglass is going to be quite similar to the Empress, i've not tried one but all reports point to its transparency and I bumped into Doug months ago in London and we were talking about his plans for a comp, he was saying the Empress was a favourite of his and I got the impression that was the direction his was going to go. That wouldn't really help to reduce the size however.
Received mine today I part exchanged my Cali 76 transformer version earlier this year. I was an earlier adopter but I never really got in with it frequently reaching for other compressors and even swapping out on a number of dates over the summer for my Compressore. Ultimately I think it came down to the amount of control that I had and the difficulty in continually dealing in settings on the fly in high pressure live settings yet it as great in the studio. This already feels completely different. The same high quality compression but super easy to dial in a variety of compression settings from percussive to Levin-esque squishy and the build quality is stunning . I'm continually astounded by the work of Origin Effects. What an incredible time it is to be a British bass player with companies such as Origin, Barefaced and Cog Effects (to name but a handful) on our door steps.
Its great isn't it, I'm preferring it to my old full size by some distance. Can I ask when you engage the pedal do you get that momentary cut is sound rather than seamless switching I mentioned a few posts up? Origin don't want to reply to any mails ive sent asking about that.
Genuine question.... Why does anyone want to send you effected signal directly to foh bypassing the preamp? Especially if you have fuzz and dirt? If your playing decent sized gigs then the only folk hearing your nice amp is you? Unless I'm missing something of course.... Fraser
I do it because I use a ton of dirt and I find 1 di after everything is a little fizzy/brittle sounding. I like to mic my cabs these days which smooths it out so I runs clean di from my board before all of my effect just to get some of those deep clean lows back in I might loose from the mic. I just ask the tech to blend as he see's fit, usually 20% di the rest mic, never been happier with my live sound. It's also an insurance policy, if my amp goes down FOH still gets me. If I only have one line at a gig then I will just forget about the di, as you say if you just run the di then FOH won't get any dirt or amp tone.

Cheers mate! I think with the addition of the Bug I'm finally settled. Yeah really liking the new PT, you can definitely see the thing!

I just stuck a Radial Stage Bug (SB-2) to my Metro 16, really please with it and at £65 I cant see anything better for the money out there.
Great setup! How are you finding the radial di? Looks worth a shot at £70...
Yeah good actually. I'm using it just after my tuner and before everything else so its sending a clean signal to front of house that will still cut when I tune. I use pretty hi levels of dirt all the time so I find putting a mic on my cab gets me a nicer sound out front, the DI is just there to add a little weight back in if the engineer needs it, working really well so far. As you say for £70 I couldn't go wrong.

A fairly substantial downsize but this is working great for my live needs at the moment.

Yeah I was surprised and thought I might have been short on m/a from my supply at first but have tried high current outlets on my cioks and still the same, it's very very brief with a slight swell back to full volume. Have messaged Simon to ask if that's right but he is away at the moment so as yet no reply, will keep you informed. Anyone else get one of these let me know if you're does that. Otherwise it's rad like I said. Edit - Have watched a few reviews of the other compact pedals and they do the same thing so I'm guessing its normal, like I said though not an issue for me.

It's thinner and nicer to play than my old combustion, quite a lot nicer actually but still not as thin as my AB1 which is just stunning to play, not sure about the ABZ but I would imagine it's the same as the AB1?

Tom said he had something new coming out, look forward to finding out more!

Arrived not long ago. Only had 10 minutes with it, I need to get it on the board and spend some more time with it but initial thoughts are its killer, the HPF is every bit as good as I hoped, and surprisingly perhaps I think I do prefer it to my old full size Cali (non transformer version, I suspect this isn't quite up to the transformer version standard). It really has a ton of depth, open up the HPF and its just a bottomless pit of Cali loveliness. The controls are very intuitive, wasn't sure about the combined Attack/Release control but having just used it its really nice and my main concern was the metering but the single light is pretty cool and I'm actually liking its making me use my ears more rather than just looking at a meter for 8 to 12 DB reduction which is my default. It feels like they have squeezed a lot in this little thing, its reassuringly heavy and is built like a tank. Its bloody good, if I had just spent that 10 minutes in a shop trying it I would have walked out £300 lighter. Edit - Had some more time with it now and yeah it is very very good indeed, for what I want out of a compressor pedal its as good as it gets, was going to give the Darkglass a try as well but not now I'm very happy with this. Couple of negatives would be there is a brief cut in sound when the pedal is engaged, but most will have this always on so not an issue I guess and the huge chunky screws holding the bass plate on, that means a single layer of Velcro on the bottom doesn't make contact with the pedalboard, so i had to stick a few layers of thick Gaffa tape on the bottom then put the Velcro on so it clears the screws, seems an odd flaw for a pedal that's selling point is its more pedal board friendly than the full size units. But these are minor things, the compressor its self is a work of art really.

They are still there, Mike lives a few minutes drive from me and does any work on my gear I need doing, see him every few months usually and he always has a few new builds hanging around in the work shop for people, he also built me a new neck recently for a project I was working on. From talking to him I think he is just happy taking on as much as suits him and the stuff he finds interesting. He has a ton of amp builds going on, plenty of people like me getting work done on basses and as i said there is always a Zoot or 3 in various stages of completion. The site isn't the most up to date but drop him an email and he will get strait back to anyone looking for a bass or some work, still top quality as you would expect too.
No its fine when set to zero its when its set high it just shuts off the sound which I don't understand. I just don't think I'll use it. Its a very quiet pedal, the sound isn't as distorted as the guitar version of the pi muff deluxe, should have got that. Often effects designed for bass just aren't as good...
Sounds like its working as it should. I had that pedal for a few years and yeah the gate was pretty aggressive when set high, I would usually have it set between 8 and 9 o'clock but would also leave it off completely from time to time if I wasn't playing super loud, the gate is simply there to cut out unwanted noise if you don't need the feature just leave it off. As far as should you have got the guitar one, id say no, I played around with that as well and the Muff you have now is a far superior unit for bass, its a really nice pedal if you want that muff sound, I ended up moving away from it as i didn't need that sound any more but I always liked that pedal.
So, who has theirs now? A few at Talkbass have already had theirs, so us UK forums goers should have some by now, surely!
Still waiting on mine, ordered on the day of release, they expected it to be 3 weeks but coming up for 5 and no word yet so I'm guessing they have had a lot more interest than expected! Will report back thoughts when it turns up...

£25 shipped Bright Onion A/B Looper, i had them make me this as i was using two distortions always on, this mean i could flip between one and the other with one click and it kept one out of my signal chain, i had this one made with no master bypass to save space and squeez it on my board, if ever i did want clean i just turned one of the Distortions off;. Handy little thing if space is an issue. Its this without the bypass and flipped vertically - http://www.brightoni...dual-ab-looper/ Board cables and power supply now sold... Yeah agree with elephantgrey, a blender is a great option and the way I would go. This is a little cheaper than the one you posted from Ebay but still a few quid.... http://www.brightoni...blender-looper/ Can highly recommend Bright Onion stuff though.
