1. I picked up on them around the time of Time's Up which is an excellent album. Saw them at Portsmouth Guildhall just after Doug replaced Muzz. They probably should have been bigger.
2. Gratuitous pink Thumb opportunity. Cass Lewis toured it, Phil Spalding recorded it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynIHsHYaig0
3.
Wow, He really is still using an (out of production) Trace Elliot rig!! Cool Dude -- Top Player & Craftsman B
I think he's an Ashdown whore these days.
4.
Yes, the album certainly hasn't aged well... he said being charitable... in the extreme... it hadn't aged well by about 1989! Mind you it was a cracking gig at the Manchester Apollo. And they had two support acts who were amazing... 20 mins of Steve on acoustic followed by 20 minutes of t'other Steve on acoustic.
They were well hyped at the time. A discrete 'six figure sum' was received by the Steve's - so I guess the record company were calling the AOR tune. There's some video around of some studio/rehearsal sessions? And a 2nd album was maybe recorded? Max Bacon turned up on an eighties talent show doing some of the songs - prob the best place for them 😀
5.
A little bit of Mr Spaulding in action...
Nice vid. Going off (my own) topic, I remember being very excited about GTR having enjoyed both the Steve's stuff up 'til then. Looking back though it was a bit of a disaster - MOR American tinged rock - eugh. And the singer had a mullet. GTR fact: Jonathan Mover, the drummer, switched places with Ian Mosley in Marillion, Mosley having been in Hackett's early eighties touring band.
6. Been watching all the re-runs of TOTP on BBC4 (they're up to 1983) and the man popped up in Mike Oldfield's band. I know him from GTR and Toyah.
7. Just for the sake of it - F# only. Effective though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np_Y740aReI
8. The riff she's playing under the vocal's always does my head in!
9. Great version. Always liked that song.
10. An evening as an anonymous bass player or Nicole Kidman remembering that night forever.... no brainer!!!
11. They don't sound like harmonics on the studio version. I'd be very surprised if he didn't play with tunings a lot. I know he did it for Portrait of Tracy.
12.
I thought prog already had a bad name?
13. An hour from a live show on Vintage TV. 60 mins of time signature musical meanderings I'll never get back 😭
14. Nice post. I was eight but I can't remember much about the sixties 'cos I was there
15. Too tough for two choices for the chameleon's output. Early high: Life on Mars. Later high: Scary Monsters album. Low: Blackstar - can't stand it. Honourable mention: Let's Dance - so he went all out for hits - and got 'em!
16.
for my pedals I use this Joyo rechargeable battery, 2000mA, lasts for hours https://www.cheaperpedals.com/products/joyo-jmp-02-portable-power-supply
That's awesome!
17.
Now other builders like ACG offer options that to my mind, do 'all that and more' of the Wal filter preamp tone. Don't get me wrong, I love them and I covet them but their deification still rather mystifies me.
Chris2112 sleeps with the fishes after upsetting the Walfia.
18. There's a thread on here somewhere along the lines of 'things that bug you about your bass.' I don't think there was one complaint about Spectors. The build quality is excellent at all levels. Careful though, you could possibly fall in love with them
19. A question that's wasted on me. I'm watching the charts on the '83 reruns of TOTP lately. It strikes me that the streaming situation is massively open to abuse. A question that isn't wasted on me is Ed Sheeran's talent. He's brilliant, he can use a looper
20.
Would make for an interesting episode of TOTP!
21. The Thin White Duke's put on some weight hasn't he?
22.
I actually thought I was getting reasonably OK at this. Then at band rehearsal yesterday we tried to play this song... Back to the bloody drawing board All hail Bruce Foxton Except when he himself makes a bit of a mess of it:
I can handle this one (and The Beatles' Taxman strangely ) but as soon as I start thinking about it I'm in trouble. A big point which has been made already is to learn both parts backwards and inside out!
