1.
Always Fenders... they will always be the oldest.
A mate's son has just bought his first bass. He learned on his dad's SSD (which I sold him - cracking bass). He bought a Jazz cos all the bands he knows are playing Fenders.
 2.
With pedal preamps there can be a volume issue. The pedals have a rather limited amount of gain they can provide for a few reasons, mainly that they're limited by the 9V power supply but also they're designed to work in front of standard amps rather than power amps.
Thanks Jack. Without this wonderful site I wouldn't have known that.
 3. I play bass to gig. I rarely plug the thing in if I'm not in a band and that suits my approach. I'm also getting on a bit (58) and sadly I find there's fewer options around for joining a band of team players; people who put the music first and leave personal agendas/egos at home. I've also seen bands that throw in the odd obscurity which if you're billed as a covers band is unacceptable. The downside is playing Sex on Fire et al but we're entertainers first and foremost.
 4. I think as far as recent and new bands are concerned the die's been cast already. Retro Fenders, Musicman and Gibson and I wouldn't expect that to change.
 5.
Tony Levin (plus some other blokes) through the ages (curious fashion choices within as well)
Damn fine excuse for a bit of Tony. That song's joyous too.
 6.
Has Philips Cleartone Conversions moved across the pond?
7.
Spector Euros are hardly 'entry models'. They are 90% the same as the US models but half the price or less (still pricey) and fantastic instruments in their own right. Stuart Spector & PJ also take a real hands on/personal approach with their Euro offerings. Their Korean models could be considered more 'entry models' but again are extremely well made and excellent value for money....!
+1. Also the NS2000 Korean series and SSD NS-94's are great basses.
 8. Ed's the darling of the media right now and that's never had anything to do with talent.
 9.
He's played for lots of people, including Nick Heyward...
He was on a re-run of TOTP from '83 the other night with his fretless MM with NickHeyward.
 10. You couldn't make it up.
 11. Good luck, don't forget your Rick Wakeman gold cape
 12.
I do similar in our band, I went out to buy a suitable bass synth, I was looking at the Novation Bassstation 2 synth but was entirely underwhelmed by it, I also tried the Moog fatty and wasn't taken with that either, I ended up buying the new Roland System 8 which is fantastic but totally over the top for my bass part needs, if you want to spend sensible money the Roland System 1 seems to be a decent option
FWIW I used to have a BS2 and found it thoroughly underwhelming (if you haven't got a degree in synth programming).
 13.
I never tried it. It was on the list of stuff to learn but we haven't learned any new stuff (well, new, you know what I mean) Spirits in the material world was strange too. Sting doesn't come in at the same point for each line of words. I still count myself in for the very first line. Hole in my life was challenging too!!
I'm glad you mentioned Spirits - I've never needed to play it in a band but just noodling's enough to give up with it!
 14. Geddy playing Roundabout!!! He'll not need his Jazz.
 15. Saw The Musical Box at Pompey Guildhall last year and the bass player's Rick was clear as hell across it's whole range. I wonder if the crew try for a '70's mix.' And while I'm on it (climbing onto soapbox), all this kick drum nonsense has led to pub drummers insisting on it being amplified however small the venue is.
 16. Couldn't resist.
 17.
I've never been a fan of the old Washburn B20 head stock.
And the horror continues into the body. Also the G string hangs over the edge of the headstock. Very poor.
 18. Let's not overlook a superb example of design brain-fartery (body included).
 19. Did he use the modded Rick on Who Do We Think We Are? The bass is awesome on that album.
 20.
DS unfairly get a bad rap. Truth is, they're great songs, well played, and well produced. Listen to stuff like 'It Never Rains' - pretty hard-hitting stuff. I adore 'em.
Agreed. FWIW I think Brothers in Arms is a cracking album regardless of all the 80's dross stick it gets.
 21.
A few more. Basicly, just google "bass headstock" and take your pic...
That first one's done by someone with visions of a ship's capstan. Sunken tuning pegs - why?
 22. Thread revival time. Been listening to Made in Japan lately and my ears are possibly deceiving me but is Jon Lord doubling up on some of the sub E bass on it? Any thoughts?
 23.
http://basschat.co.u...david-phillips/
Interests... microlite design. That's a worry.
 24.
Not the winner, but...
OMG, that would win an award for the body too! Ned must have been broke!
 25. Post some bad headstockery please http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222419696883 Many thanks to dyerseve for his original post.
