Best bass strap for back issues and weight distribution
spectoremg replied to funkyjimbob's topic in Accessories and Misc
Just tried my new Neotech with my Thumb 4 for an hour and it felt great - no neck dive and no achey arm/shoulder afterwards. I also have a Comfort Strapp on another bass and that's great too. -
Derrick Taylor - Reeve Bass - Roachford
spectoremg replied to FlatEric's topic in General Discussion
Nice post. I remember seeing him with his Status 5-er during the Roachford days. -
They're nowhere near as bright as rounds out of the box but I prefer old strings anyway. Good in the bottom end and the feel is fantastic. I tried a bass with flats a while back and didn't like the feel at all - these are a great compromise. Doesn't seem to be any change in tension from 105 gauge rounds which were on it previously and these which are 115 gauge. And it goes without saying that they have loads of HEFT!

Jamerson's featuring, and rightly so. While I'm at it, You're All I Need To Get By* *Assuming he did play on that one.
"Refuge of the road" by Joni Mitchell with Jaco on bass.....the phrasing, the sensitivity, the tone, the whole world he seems to open up....
Great choice. She once described other bass player's styles as 'putting a picket fence' around here music and subsequently how much he opened it up. Her planets must have really lined up when she got him in her touring band in '79 (along with that other slouch Pat Metheny)!

Great communication, very trustworthy (on a £1200 sale). Top bloke.

Nothing massively exciting (unless you're ME)! Warwick Thumb 4 in bubinga. Also LaBella Copper Nylon Coated strings. I'm now in love with nylon strings.
IMO, the bass part for 'Tea In the Sahara' encapsulates the 'less is more' ethos. It's especially remarkable given the prevailing trends of the time.
Great track, the live version's good too (bit of Taurus pedals). I love all the bass sounds on Synchronicity too.

Warwick Thumb in black, with LEDs

The finish looks awful. -
The chap isn't particularly communicative I did ask about history and that's all he gave me. I think he just wanted rid of it however I doubt it had any celebrity connection. It's beautifully made and sounds pretty good too!
To be fair it's a great story already.
The screw on backplate was a JB feature to prevent buckle rash. As a young man (The Who) in the late 1970s and early 80s I was wearing Levis and Wranglers complete with large buckled belt. Fashionable at the time I am told, great for guitar backs. My JB EB/SG bass (in my hands circa 1980/81) had the same feature, the complete back 'scratchplate, it seemed to work well. Whatever JB used as finish was 'interesting', my bass (black) had lost a fair amount of neck finish, leaving some white coloured undercoat showing. JB did an excellent job of refinishing neck (and electrics) for not much money. This was when they were based in Bromsgrove.
I'm in two minds about this - it's a solution that isn't if that makes sense; a cure for buckle rash that's ugly plastic with um... buckle rash 😮

A part I never tire of and which always grabs my heart is Jaco's from the live version of Hejira, particularly at the 'white flags of winter chimneys...' line.
My trusty old '87 Kramer NS 2.
Very nice!
Had a quick rummage for the If You Love Sombody live but can only find earlier (Bring On The Night era) clips. Got any links to the Tracy version? Wooden spoon bonus round: Temptation/Frustration etc. etc.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XUaDJm0ac8 There you go.

This gets weirder. I've just remembered that the Lyte morphed into the Zone bass. The one at BD is the same body shape. Retro fitted Jazz neck? Weren't all the Jazz Specials just small bodied Jazz's?
Love The Police and a fair chunk of his solo output. I remember saying to a friend around the time of the Lute album "it's really hard staying a Sting fan sometimes". Didn't think much of his recent session on Jools either. I missed The Police first time round but caught them in 2007 in Vienna (brilliant - one of a few standing gigs they did) and Wembley Arena (so so). I saw him first at the Human Rights Now show at Wembley Stadium in 198something, round about the time of Nothing Like The Sun, and on the tour for the same album at Wembley Arena. Bassist then was Tracy Wormworth from The Waitresses! (that's her on Christmas Wrapping). I saw the Back To Bass show a couple of years ago as well, that was pretty good. Added props for some brilliant basslines in The Police, agree Ten Sumner's Tales is his best. Also love The Lazarus Heart from NLTS, Jeremiah Blues Pt 1, Dream Of The Blue Turtles (with Demolition Man on Bring On The Night - wow), Moon Over Bourbon St, live album All This TIme is surprisingly good. Bonus points for ongoing use of Moog Taurus synth pedals. Wooden spoon for the "greatest hits with orchestra" thing, trying to be too clever-clever, the Lute album, the musical, the beard, buddy-buddy tours with Peter Gabriel and Paul Simon, telling his kids they're not inheriting anything.
Tracy Wormworth, always wondered who played on that tour. She does a lovely drop D bass line on If You Love Somebody etc which was a bonus live track with one of his singles. It was nice to hear him back on the bass for his second album after Daryll Jones did the first and their's some lovely bass on it.
Ahhhhh. I was told, or it was suggested, that it was about his break up from his first wife.
One and the same subject I think.

I agree that his lyrics are (or were) superb - stuff that makes you think and +1 for Fortress Around Your Heart. He's done a very naughty thing with the lyrics to Every Breath ... though. He made it quite clear on it's release that it shouldn't treated as a love song because it's about stalking. He's changed his mind since.
Sorry I cant help but post this amazing record
And while I'm at it, there can't be many bands who's best album was their last album.

Yep good album, one of my favourites of his. And there's always lovely bass lines on his stuff.

These retailed for about £400 around the early noughties before Fender morphed them into another name. The resell prices are horrendous so he'll be lucky to get what he's asking. I had a deluxe version with the 3-band eq and it was an excellent bass.
