I converted a 4-string to BEAD some time ago and recall only minor tweaks to the neck and intonation with comparable gauge strings. I also did it cos I couldn't get on with a 5-string.

99.9% sure it's a defret - that knocks the value, surely.
Jon.
Did Gibson make a fretless version?

To me, solid means always there, holding it all together. And I have. always maintained that in an ideal world, no should notice the bass unless it stops
This!
You can call my playing solid every day of the week. I'm also very happy to be 'anonymous' in the mix.
I'd describe James Jamerson as busy but also solid - not a single note of his playing didn't fit the music.

How about "Great! What's the charity? Is everyone involved doing it for free - sound engineer, bar staff, marketing? Are the promoters taking any of the door money to cover their costs?"
This! You can be damn sure someone's getting paid.

How about UK - In The Dead Of Night
John Wetton at his best.
Love that album and it's a great candidate for definitive prog. Saw John Wetton TOGWT once singing over that In The Dead Of Night bass line. Difficult.
Sunburst, large body, ugly, single pickups, single tone control, body mounted jacks, massively disproportionate headstocks and tuners you could play table tennis with.
So basically this.

I think that there is a degree of truth in that, but probably the biggest selling and most enduring prog band from that period is Pink Floyd - a line-up that includes a couple of nice players but not exactly dripping in virtuosity!
I think that the key element is (as ever) the strength of the material...
+1, nobody shredding in Pink Floyd.

I don't think that anyone has mentioned The Yes Album yet? My favourite, probably because it isn't 'too proggy'!
Close To The Edge is immense as well. Funny how of all the prog stuff I listened to in my youth, Yes are the only band that left a lasting impression...
If I had one Yes album on my desert island (bamboo stereo) it'd be Fragile. Loads of respect for The Yes Album and I agree Fragile's a bit disjointed. Probably because Fragile was my first taste of Yes. And Roundabout's their finest eight and an half minutes.

Not too sure if Jeff Wayne`s War of the Worlds is prog rock. That is listenable in my opinion
Damn fine album either way.
