5.
Not sure why the attitude towards me on this topic when few others had the same thoughts as myself ? If i've taken it the wrong way my apologies.
I'd personally take a best of anything to represent a particular short time scale whether it be sport, art etc. I love Second's out but it does represent seven years worth of the bands output, including line-up changes. Apologies if I was a bit short - I do that
 6.
Think the OP's title was "Best Prog Album Ever. No mention whether live, compilation or whatever. Its surely about what album you actually prefer. Some of the albums the tracks were taken from i found boring and didn't buy them but when you take the best tracks and make it live its shows exactly how good Genesis were in those days. Dave
We'll agree to disagree then. And um, thanks for pointing that out dad.

 10.
Marillion could be great, but IMO Ian Mosley has to be the worst drummer in prog.
Nope, Nick Mason's the worst drummer in prog.
 11.
Maybe this is cheating, but I'll say 'Yessongs'. As I'm a bit of a heavy rock yobbo, I actually prefer the more kick-ass live versions of CTTE, Siberian Khatru etc to the studio originals. Heresy, I know!
I heard Close to the Edge on this first and love this version.
 12.
Would have to say :- Genesis - Seconds Out is my all time fav album Floyd - DSOTM is 2nd I play these 2 albums regularly since buying even after 40yrs. From modern era :- Arjen Lucassen - Lost In The New Reel. Steve Wilson - Hand Cannot Erase Minor Giant - On The Road The list could be endless but these are few favs. Prog being my fav kind of music. Dave
Second's Out's live and therefore a compilation - not allowed. It isn't in the right running order either.
 13.
But......utterly brilliant. Daft, mad, dense, but brilliant, still on regular rotation in the car for those long business trips!
I will never ever ever stop listening to Tales From Topographic Oceans.
 14. I can't help feeling that this is all fiddling while Rome burns. Currently Yes have one classic line up member; Steve Howe (I always preferred Bill Bruford to Alan White). And I'm minded of Genesis when they went a bridge too far with Ray Wilson after Phil's departure.
 15.
Voyage of the Acolyte by Steve Hackett. It has songs with titles like 'Hands of the Priestess, Part I' and '"Shadow of the Hierophant'. It doesn't get much more prog than that! Honourable mentions; Power and the Glory by Gentle Giant, Minstrel in the Gallery by Jethro Tull and Fragile from Yes.
Good call with Voyage of the Acolyte - Steve just went and did it!
 16. I seem to recall that Prog mag's readership had Selling England By The Pound as number one. That's a hell of an album (blatant Genesis fan here) but you'd have to offer up an album that both defines the genre and would be the start of it. And I don't know what that album is. I consider The Moody Blues to be the fathers (unintentionally) of prog.
 17.
An interesting point in that I remember vividly having conversations around that time in which it was commented upon that they sounded quite different not the least because Squire played with a pick and Lee with his finger. Nevertheless, I get your point. $64,000 question, though. Could his high voice replace Anderson at the same time!!!
Only if Jon Anderson's taken up yodelling.
 18.
Well he IS the industry's go-to man if you want a totally inappropriate replacement for a well-loved, iconic bass player..
19. Did he also mention that the 'Stones output was rather formulaic?
 20. Some bands allow singers (and it's usually females) to get away with bad behaviour which they subsequently inflict on other bands.
 21. Tried an amp out recently. They were playing The Police greatest hits in the background. I said 'you can leave that on, I know all these'. He thought I was kidding and turned it off. Cue fumbling.
 22. Minitaur Toxic with rack ears.
 23.
I inherited this old P Bass once. Strings were decades old with an unplayable action. I stripped it down to get the action to something approaching normal and noticed some dolt had carved FUNK into the neck heel. Restrung it with fresh round wounds but could never get a good rock tone out of it. Just a thump thump thump like the strings were dead again. Plus, whenever I started to play it my right hand would cramp up to the point I could only play with one finger- Weird huh? Final straw was when I started to dream about impossible bass lines and apparently woke up one night screaming out the name Bernadette. I’ve never met anyone called Bernadette. Part ex’d it on a nice Ibanez SR and never looked back.
That is indeed spooky!
