I did it - picked up lovely ‘hog fretless, I’m happy :-) LOL at visog. I have no shame, that won’t be a problem :-) Me and My Bass cheers man, maybe next time

Going to Bassdirect, that’s the nearest place to me with a decent amount of stuff

Hey all I’m out hunting for a U Bass tomorrow. I’m expecting to use it for folk (amplified) as well as my P Bass, and maybe as a novelty thing on some pop/R&B/funk/disco... I’m likely to try out Kala Rumbler (fretted) and a couple of fretless Kalas (spruce & mahogany). What would you be looking for when trying them out and comparing these? I also have to make a fretted vs fretless decision. Pro fretless I have a little experience of playing lined fretless (normal scale length). I’ve tried fretless Kalas briefly before, and found the tuning manageable with a bit of concentration. I think I’ll get more of a different sound from my Fender and it would sound more like a double bass It has lines Pro fretted I’m a bit worried that I may struggle to keep it in tune Mahogany is more expensive but comes with a better case and tuners - is this significant? The Rumbler is cheaper but laminated How do the strings compare between Rumbler and the others? Do they all have the same electronics/tuner? Obviously it’s going to be affected by how they play, but I’m thinking that the Hog Fretless is the nicest idea. And finally straps - there’s a button at the big end, and I was going to just use a shoelace at the nut like an acoustic guitar - what does anyone else do? Comments welcome....

Hello gang OK. here goes. I play in 2 bands. One needs a big pedal board with a million choruses, envelope filters, the whole shebang. It also contains a PolyTune mini and an MXR compressor. My other band is much simpler and only needs the compressor and tuner (possibly EQ would be nice but I’m not too fussed). So - I think I have a couple of options - get a micro pedal board (maybe a pedal train nano) with another tuner, compressor, and maybe space for an EQ - multi FX. I notice that there is a tiny Zoom thing available and also various things from Boss and Vox I’m not massively concerned about price, more about quality and portability. How do the multi FX compressors and tuners compare to the discrete ones? Please advise, o pedal gurus.

As you can tell I’m far from expert but it felt nice to me. I’ll take it out to practice on Tuesday and report back if anyone’s interested.

Small lighting set up for pub band?
chickenjames replied to Gottastopbuyinggear's topic in Accessories and Misc
I’ve been down this journey. I ended up an Obey 6 controller. It’s very simple as it assumes 6 fixtures, each with 6 channels. Works absolutely fine with 6 simple RGB LED Par cans. You just have to remember to set their base addresses to be at 1, 7, 13 etc. I have them on two T bars and just leave all the mains cables daisy chained. Works fine. Just add a disco ball and some smoke and you’re all set :-). I also have a 4 way 65W LED block that I put on the floor pointing up. For pubs, a 15W LED spot is -dazzling- The Obey 6 has sound to light, built in microphone. You can set the patterns to be whatever you want, walking colours, alternating fades, and it’s easy to set some lights to do different things to the others. You can also do strobes or vary the fade time, and there’s an overall dimmer as well. Cost me about 50 quid IIRC. The only thing to watch out for is that it has no memory when the power’s off, but with a bit of practice you can set it up quite easily in a couple of minutes. -
Ahah ahah ahaha, I did it, now the proud owner of an octave pedal. If you’re interested, here’s how I got there. I tried Boss OC3 (again) TC sub n up mini Rowin Octpus MXR BOD And: Rowin was complete and utter junk, despicable. The upper octave was complete out of tune. I’d say it was broken by design. Cannot Recommend A Purchase. OC3 - sadly this particular instance was actually bust, wouldn’t power on at all. So, not really conclusive. Between the TCSnU and MXRBOD: Out of the box the MXRBOD had a nice octave down (obviously none up). The TC had a great octave up. I had to fiddle a lot to get a decent octave down, but once I had, to my ears it sounded about as nice as the octave down on the MXR. So - given that the TC was also fifty-sixty quid cheaper and also had a nice octave up, it was an easy decision. And the TonePrint is a nice bonus.
-
Ok I think I’m done for envelopes for now. Tried the mxr live last night and I completely love it. Now it’s octave time. I need help. I’ve never really played with one before but I love the sound. Any time I’ve tried them in shops with the shop bass, it’s completely sucked. I’ve done reading and I think I understand in theory the difference between analogue and digital (I have a masters in digital electronics). I’ll be trying the TC sub n up mini, boss oc3 head to head with my own stingray. So what do you gurus recommend? Should I play my usual funk riffs in the normal place and add an octave up? Play them up the neck and get the pedal to add one below? What would Bootsy do? Any suggested settings would be super helpful. Should I use a particular TonePrint on the Tc? Is it better to use the bass or guitar input on the boss? Basically what I’m looking for is octave 101 - how to play it to its strengths. Riffs I’d like to be lovely: I wish Pull up to the bumper Boogie oogie oogie That sort of things.....

You are right, of course, about the she/it thing. Sorry. I am ashamed to confess that I only have three she’s right now.* It’s funny how you try a pedal in the shop, and you know that this is The One :-) Fender USA P 2012, EBMM StingRay 4 2EQ 2010, Sire MM v7 2015

I just splashed out on the MXR BEF. It’s replaced a trusty and well-beloved Ashdown BEF, but honestly it’s completely head and shoulders better. I found it was pretty difficult to get a duff sound out of it, and can’t wait to try her out live
-
Well, progress is being made. I tried out the MXR BEF and it is - amazing. So I now have a little bit of purple sparkly goodness at the front of my chain. I traded in the Ashdown BEF - so long, farewell. BUT - I had a long play with the only octaver in the shop, an OC-3, and I completely hated it. Utterly revolting, no tone at all, hardly ever tracked anything i.e. it literally sat there, insolently mute, for a lot of my sonic experiments. I suspect it’s me and my playing, but I just don’t seem to dig on octavers at all. I can’t stand the thing where you have to modify your playing to cope with it, and large areas of the fretboard become taboo. Again - this is probably just me - but I suspect that I am never going to get into Octavers. But the good news is - the MXR BEF is much much smaller than the Ashdown BEF - and so I now have loads of free space :-) Lead me, war leaders. I think it’s time for something silly. Don’t suggest a Bassballs though. I tried one of those puppies and it was, well, too silly. :-)
-
Thanks man, this is cool. I’m currently leaning towards MXR BEF and octave, will let you know what I think just as soon as I make to the music shop!

Hello BC crowd I’d like to beg your indulgence by describing my effects journey - perhaps you can make some lovely suggestions on where I should go next. I play funk/soul/R&B/pop (and folk - but ignore that for now :-) ). Current signal chain is EBMM 2EQ Ray (or Sire MM v7, or USA P) PolyTune mini Ashdown BEF Boss BEQ Deluxe Bass Big Muff Pi TC vortex mini EHX small stone EHX bass clone TC HOF mini MXR bass comp MXR bass pre amp MB CMD121P with NY121P I’ve tried various other thing and not got on with them EHX Enigma Q balls. I really wanted to love this but couldn’t make it fly with my then bass, a Spector 5. Should I revisit it with the ‘Ray? What about trying a MXR BEF? Octaves. I really feel like I should be getting one but I’ve tried a couple in shops and didn’t like the sound... I tried the TC sub n up mini, the octave up was OK but the down was disgusting. Tried a POG mini, hated the price but the sound was better Suggestions welcome.... I have room for 3 more mini pedals and I’m gassing like mad :-)

Sorry if this is obvious, but have you checked that it’s not something about how the power is wired? My experience went like this: I had a large number of pedals daisy chained off a single (fairly high powered) supply. (High powered pedals (100mA): TC vortex mini, TC HOF mini Mid powered TC PolyTune mini (80mA IIRC) And lots of low powered: Bass Big Muff Pi deluxe, MXR bass comp, MXR bass preamp, EHX small stone, Ashdown BEF) What I noticed was there was a massive click when switching some of the pedals (TC Vortex and Small Stone). ) When I wired it using a new PSU (TRex Junior), I put the higher powered ones on their own isolated 9V. And the clicks went away. Might be worth trying, or at least run the TC spark on its own and see if that makes any difference. I was too lazy to read the OP properly, sorry, but if it’s a full size version (not mini) then does it click when it’s powered from a battery? HTH, ignore if not relevant

First Bass you owned - still have it?
chickenjames replied to LewisK1975's topic in General Discussion
My first bass was a Lindo. It was utter, utter sh*t. I bought it on Ebay - new - for about £30. I was robbed. I sold it to a bloke at work for £20. I've sold various basses since then, I had a Yamaha RBX374 which was OK but had no soul, then a MIM P, which again was OK but I didn't love. I also sold my first decent bass, a Spector Legend Classic 5, which was great but I realised that I just don't like playing a 5er. Now I have cut down to just a US P, EBMM 4H and a Marcus Miller Sire v7 - that covers pretty much anything I can imagine. -
hello all I want to put flats (d'Addario) on my std P-bass. It currently has DR hi beams. When I did this to my EBMM, I had to spend quite a long time setting it up - not just the saddles but also messing around with the truss rod etc. The setup on the Fender is currently lovely, and IIRC the flats are higher tension and so are likely to raise the action a bit. I don't particularly want to start adjusting the truss rod - apart from anything it looks more difficult than the 'Ray as it doesn't have the little wheel thing on the end. Am I likely to get this ok just by lowering the saddles a bit? or should I plan on paying for a pro setup? thanks James

amp stand for Markbass CMD121P + ext cab

nice, I like that yellow stand he's using at the back there :-) How stable are the Markbass angle stands do you think? I'd be a bit sad if my CMD121P fell off ! -
amp stand for Markbass CMD121P + ext cab
chickenjames replied to chickenjames's topic in Amps and Cabs
Somewhere on this site is a photo of this rig ( both yours and mine) with a custom made stand that tilts the bottom cab and keeps the top combo level. I think it originated in the USA. Found it: https://www.talkbass...covers.1063946/
oo that's interesting - don't really have time to make a custom stand like that though... walbassist I like that Markbass leaning velcro stand jobber - but I'm not sure how it would help me with the 2nd box i.e. the one that sits on top. I think I'm going to try to the Quiklok thing and see how I like it. -
I had a little Ampeg - BA-112 I think. It sounded quite nice, a little bit too heavy for how loud it was, but basically decent. I have a Markbass Micromark 801 now - amazing little thing, but probably a bit too pricey.
-
hello all I have a MB CMD121P and NY121P. I'd like to get them up off the floor a bit (to project more forwards) and maybe also angled back a bit (to make it easier for me to hear them). I'm thinking of getting a Quiklok 625 combo stand but I'm just wondering if anyone has any better ideas. thanks for comments/suggestions

I have a 2EQ StingRay with d'Addario flats. I use a Markbass Micromark 801 for practice at home and a CMD121P+NY121P rig for gigs It sounds awesome. I usually set VLE to about 11 o'clock, with the bass controls set to bass 100% and treble 0%-25%

Is there a reason for the apparent dislike for active basses...
chickenjames replied to Rocker's topic in Bass Guitars
I like both :-) I have 3 basses P (passive). It's nice only having to touch the single tone control EBMM (active, 2EQ). It's nice only having to touch a single tone control (I always leave bass on full and adjust treble) Sire MM v7 (active, millions of knobs). Nice but slightly complicated preamp e.g. it has a sweepable mid!. There is a proper active/passive switch which helps, also all the knobs have a detente in the middle. -
this is intended to be a keeper. Interestingly the setup on the P was much better than on my Ray so it prompted me to give it a good clean and readjust. Basically I had the Ray set up not to buzz at all (acoustically) and this resulted in a slightly high action. The P buzzes a little when it's acoustic but there's nothing to be heard when it's plugged in - and this makes it go WAY faster. Now they both go fast :-) I've put Hi Beams on the P for now but I imagine it will end up getting Chromes sooner or later. And, again. The sound :-) :-)
-
it really is pretty tidy. I'm enjoying discovering the cool bits e.g. through strung hi-mass bridge. And that sound! it's the thickest rudest old thing you ever heard. I reckon I have most of the basses(*bases) covered now with EBMM Ray, this P bass, and Sire Jazz. :-)
