Now I'm no expert on pickups. I play straight into an AER Basic Performer with all the amp controls at midday and just tweak the tone on the bass to suit the song so I find the pickups perfectly adequate. You are more than welcome to try mine out at your leisure if you can get to deepest Essex.

Now that’s a difficult question to answer because I tend to choose instruments I buy very quickly, the one I’m going to purchase ‘becomes apparent’ almost straight away. In all honesty thei was very little difference between the Talman and the Jaguar, I was equally impressed with both, but the Talman was in cream, which I’d never buy and the Jaguar was black which I’ll always go for over any other colour but the ergonomics of the Jaguar just suited me more than the Talman. The Jaguar just felt ‘right’, it is comfortable, light and I just felt at home with it. I was impressed with the Talman, however I was smitten with the Jaguar. You are right, the look of the Jaguar is lovely, I really don’t like the look of the Talman headstock, again, aesthetics but with the basses being similarly priced things like that tip the balance. I loved the matte neck on the Jaguar, I think I’m right in saying the neck on the Jaguar feels a little rounder too... I’m waffling, I just preferred the Jaguar for mostly undefinable reasons!

Mine was £190. Having played it a lot since getting it I think I agree, nothing really needs changing, it’s more aesthetics, I just quite fancy everything on the bass to be black. I can’t quite believe the quality at this price.

Black is perfect for me. Did you find a case for yours?

Commenting on and discussing music and bass related stuff is surely what the entire forum consists of, isn’t that what we are all doing here? Perhaps we should rename the site Basschtum.

Welcome. Don’t do what I did and spend the next thirty years playing full scale bass without trying a short scale. Go to a decent shop and play EVERYTHING. Make notes about which you like and which you don’t then come back here and see what’s for sale that’s similar, or post your findings and I’m sure some of the experts here will let you know what’s good and what’s not. I just bought a short scale Squier Jaguar and have just got back from a my first lesson using it, it’s a great bass in my book. So if I were you I’d take the advice from the good people on here but, in the end, you pick which bass just feels good and right to you, never discount that feeling just because you are starting out. I’d say it was fifty fifty, half good advice, half the personal vibe you get from the bass.

Mid-rehearsal yesterday I got fed up with not having a short scale electric bass so along with my musical comrade we drove down to PMT to see what was in. I tried a Talman and an Ibanez SR 500, both of which were lovely but didn’t have that extra ting that makes your ears light up. As I was leaving I saw a black Squier Jaguar and asked to have a go, I sat down and as soon as I started playing I was smitten, within thirty seconds a new song was appearing. I think I played it for a minute before I bought it, I had no idea it would be this lovely. I would be interested to hear about any modifications folk here have done to their Jaguars.

As a P Bass does not hit any of the OEDs definitions of the word Icon, I would say not, however, I think might hit (if not, at least graze) the OEDs definition of the word Iconic (the misuse of which I one of my pet hates along with literally)... Designating a person or thing regarded as representative of a culture or movement; important or influential in a particular (cultural) context. ...so I would suggest that a P Bass may well be Iconic to bass players specifically but I am unsure if this actually makes it Iconic per se as I think the object has to relate to secondary signifiers for lay people as well as those involved in the field that the iconic object originates from.

Massively overpricing coupled with a steep decrease of build quality will see off even the most iconic brand eventually.

This... ...I had been playing drums for a while in various short-lived punk bands but this track made me want to play bass and I sat on the doorstep of my friends house playing his ‘bought from his Mum’s catalogue’ bass along to the single, played it over and over and loved it, I was fifteen. I carried on playing drums until I was twenty five but always sneaked a go on the bass in rehearsal breaks, this song was the catalyst.

This is very true, in fact when I saw them he was using a Travis Bean.
