Early Squier JV P's - anyone know the specifications?
dave_bass5 replied to musicbassman's topic in General Discussion
Na Im not saying the basses are rubbish, but how on earth did they get to £1000 from £199? With so many very, very good bases on the market for so much less i think owning one is just a way to print money. EDIT: Sorry, thats bit off topic. My original point was having owned and gigged oen for a few years, my Squier CV knocks spots off it, and many other P basses ive owned that cost a lot less than £1000. So while they might be 'collectable' that's about it as far as im concerned. We do of course, disagree with that, which is cool. -

Well in my case it was just form memory of finding the neck a bit chunky. Could have been the depth. Either way, i found it a bit hard to play. Those JV's are nothing special IME, especially not these days when you can get a lot, lot more for less than the used asking price. Back in the day the necks were the big selling point, but these days everyone has caught up. I really cant see how a bass that cost £199 can go for almost £1000 on some websites. -

Ive seen plenty of P basses with a 44/45mm nut. This is what's put me off them over the years, although most of the time ive just put a jazz neck on them anyway. -

I think mine was as well. I do recal it being the widest P neck ive ever played. Probably normal For that type of bass, but definitely not as comfortable as other P’s ive owned/own. -
Nah, our bands like to keep their clothes on 😉

NBD - Steinberger Spirit XT-2DB - with pics!

I had two of these, the 5 string versions though , and still have the normal body version (4 string). I got mine from Music Yo. I seem to be in the minority when i say I love the EMG select pups on these basses. I swapped one of mine for the Honer active version but never though that sounded as good. -
Bushings to fit Fender American Special/Sandblasted neck
dave_bass5 replied to dave_bass5's topic in Repairs and Technical
These are what’s i need, only in black. https://shop.fender.com/en-GB/parts/tuning-machines/bass-tuning-machine-bushings--standard-deluxe-series-mexico/0051532049.html?rl=en_US -
Ive just upgraded the tuners in my Sandblasted P bass to Hipshot HB7’s, as one was bent, and ive always wanted black tuners on it. The tuners themselves went on fine, but the bushings were a tiny bit lose, so didn’t grip when i put them in. I’m sure i could put some tape around them to make them slightly fatter, but i was wondering if anyone knows the correct size i need, and more to the point where to get them (in the UK). Not fussed about brand, as long as they are a tight fit, and black.

Covers band players. Nail it or close enough?
dave_bass5 replied to krispn's topic in General Discussion
Same here. The live versions are normally where the good stuff lives. My first covers band was about 16 years ago. I had to learn a lot of the (wedding/party) standards quickly, and most were songs i didn't really listen to away from learning them. Gigged them for years. With new band i thought i needed to refresh myself with them, and i cant believe how far off i was. Not that it was ever a problem, but i was shocked that i had missed some of the fundamentals. -
That remaineds me of a EBMM bass.

Ive had a Gen 1 since they come out. Lovely bass. other than weight i cant fault it. I got a Gen 2 P7 last year and thought it was noticeably better. The neck was a bit improvement IMO. Very comfortable. Unfortunately it had a faulty bridge pup so it went back. Wouldn't hesitate to get another if i didnt have other options.

God knows, but when i find it ill take it home. 😀

A real man can be any colour, as can a real woman (or anything made up in between), but the colour of his/her/it's bass will certainly reflect the soul...😀
-
Real men only need a 4 string P bass.....
-
You're one string short of being allowed to do that 😉

How does your cover band choose the set list?
dave_bass5 replied to DoubleOhStephan's topic in General Discussion
Same here. Although she does come up with a few un popular choices sometimes. As she is my partner i cant be too negative though. -
After all the above, ive decided im sending the GK back and sticking with my Fender Rumble. Its not that i don't like the GK, i really do, but the Fender costs half the price, has less of a growl to it (so works a bit better for older stuff), has the Vintage button which really works well, and overall it just seems to suit the band a bit better. Its also not much different to my MB heads, especially in the mix. If i had more gigs id keep it, but it seems silly having that much money tied up in a head im not using week in week out, and it wont get used for rehearsals as i use my MB200.
-
Ive just pulled my guitarist up about a few of the songs, and he suggested we have a rehearsal or two to sort out the songs that aren't working. Now seeing as we reherase almost every week, what are we supposed to be doing at those. I hate it when other band members dont bother doing enough (or any) private practice and get things sorted before coming along. I spend a lot of time at home doing just that.
-
I recorded the gig, and his first comment was. 'sounds like a very amateur guitarist playing all over it' So at least he acknowledges it, its just the 'superior' manner he tends to use that winds me up. 'Oh, we dont need to go over those songs, we know them...etc etc'. Well no, actually, i do but you obviously dont.
-
Cant believe i started this thread so long ago, but only today got around to ordering one. Ill probably end up selling it sooner rather than later, but out of all the comps I’ve had (and still have), this one seems to tick all the right boxes.
-
Yeah, same here. We target our songs list so its not specific to any genre that we don’t like. We cant all like everything we play, but we don’t play anywhere that would require us to play something we aren’t in to. And for the record, i love playing Mustang Sally and Brown Eyed girl, mainly because they are floor fillers and i liked them long before i had to play them anyway.
-
Why can’t the two be combined?
