  1. I put my bridge on and while i dont quite see a real need for the felt, i put some on anyway as it will at least protect the finish, even if its not needed for sonic reasons. I also went and got an extra long 3.5" Levy's strap (so two new straps so far). Although the first, cheaper one was ok it felt a bit sharp on the edges, and i felt i could do with just one or two inches longer (giggady) Jack Casady Bass with Hipshot bridge. by Dave Pearce, on Flickr
  2. Ive been using the TCE Spectradrive for Comp and clean boost. The Spectracomp side is as expected. The OD tone print side has a clean boost patch that sounds really nice to my ears. No real added dirt unless you set the gain high. Its called 'Clean boost'. So i have that and the Spectracomp in one box, with a nice bit of EQ as well.
  3. I guess you just have to choose and decide what you can and cant do. I work full time, and only have a few hours free in the evenings. Very rare that I would spend all night playing. That’s why I tend to get the songs in my head first, as listening on headphones can be done away from home. Once I feel I’m familiar with the songs then its easier to learn them. Not everyone learns at the same speed so don’t beat yourself up about it. My posts are just explaining what I do and why. When depp’ing you have to supply the goods as you are being paid to, but for an auditon you may find its not the best that gets the job, but the one that the band feel more comfortable with. You could be the worst of the lot but if the other members take to you you can still get the job, although that’s when the hard works starts. Are you sure you can commit to this if your time is limited?
  4. Sorry, i didnt mean to come across as harsh, just that if it were me I would pull out all the stops to make sure i got the job. If that means up all night learning the songs so be it. I realise not everyone would bother going this far, but i feel i owe it to myself and those that would be affected by it to make sure i do a good job. my methods of learning is normally play along in the evenings but listen to the songs as much as possible at other times. traveling to and from work etc. For me having the songs in my head helps me learn to play them easier, as i dont have to try and remeber what comes next etc.
  5. id put more effort in to make sure i do the best i can. I appreciate what you have said above but if you are that worried, make more of an effort. When i dep i make sure i have the songs down to the best of may ability. No half measures, no excuses. Sure, you may (will) make mistakes on the night, but if its important to you then you will make sure even if you make mistakes you know the songs before hand. i think you will be fine either way though.
  6. Thanks for the reply. I like how these bridges are interchangeable so i think ill give the new one a go. Ill order some new strings as well. The idea of the felt is it goes on the underneath, to give a bit more stability on the outer edges of the bridge. This is to counteract the curved top, supposedly stops any rocking movement (as opposed to Rockin' lol). I spoek to Hipshot and they said the put either a small dot of foam either side, or sometimes strips.
  7. Ah cool, hadnt thought about putting the strap over the front. I might try that tonight. The fishing wire idea is a good one, although i think the neck dive issue is a non issues now i have the wider strap. Cheers for the photo. Is that a Super Tone bridge? ive just got one, although im wondering if i even need to use it. I like how my action is at the moment. Ill probably try it though. did you put felt under the bridge? Ive been reading about that and it seems like i should.
  8. Thanks but the new Levy's strap was just perfect last night. Well, the bass didnt dip much, but because of the grip it did ruffle my T-shirt a bit lol. I also came away with a sore red patch on my right forearm when i was resting it on the edge of the body. Not too worried at the moment but it was uncomfortable at the time. Hopefully i wont get too many long sets to play.
  9. Cheers. ironically just after i got despatch confirmation of the strap from amazon i found a nice matching red 2.5" suede Levy's strap at home attached to my sons guitar. This works fine although its a bit short. The new one is about 1" shorter so i might need to re think this. Seems almost impossible to find the extra long versions in the UK. Ill take both straps tonight and see how it goes.
  10. Yep, pretty much my reason for keeping this bass. Already had to glue a bridge post back in and paid almost £100 to get a new bridge. If this was any other bass it would have gone back, but as I know these issues are common it’s live with them or miss out on what I hear as a fantastic tone, and one I’ve bever had before. I’ve got the wide strap arriving Monday, plus I’ll have my radio transmitter on it, and I’ll use a heavy patch lead with it. I’m hoping that, and the new bridge will be enough, but I’ll sill look in to changing. The tuners as well. Got its first outing on Monday night so I’ll know if it’s a gigable bass then.
  11. Thanks for the suggestuioin. Ill look in to doing something like that if i find the dive too much. I’m ok with it when playing but yes, it’s annoying when i stop. As its very early days i might find it to be a non issue once i get used to it and might find the right strap to help it, but I’m surprised JC let this one go as i know he was quite involved with the design.
  12. Ive just got the above bass, and very nice it is too. Ill post more about it later, but this thread is about finding a nice wide, grippy strap. Can anyone suggest a strap that is wide, at least 3’’, and has maybe a suede or rough lining that will grip my clothes well. I dont want to spend silly money on a leather strap that costs about £100. I am changing the bridge, but dont want to change the tuners just yet, so its just a strap that i want. This looks like it would work, but I’d like other suggestions before i order. . https://www.gak.co.uk/en/levys-m4-brg/80828 Cheers.
  13. Yeah, although for me it’s always without PA support so I need to know I have enough headroom to cover all the gigs I do. This being the case I tend to err on the side of caution and use a rig that more than I need most of the time.
  14. Nice one. For me its a gig that really tells the truth. Standing out front at soundcheck with the whole band playing is where it really matters for me.
  15. Tore blimey, things are changing at TCE..... Sorry 🙂
  16. Yeah, I’m with you on that one. Cant stand it but....oh wait, cant stand playing it either, but i do enjoy the workout and its very satisfying when it all goes to plan. I once depp’ed With a covers band that was doing all alternative indie stuff. I had never heard most of it, and when I listened to it i couldn't understand why anyone would ever want to listen to any of it. I was right on that point, didn't go down too well at the gig, but i really enjoyed learning all the songs and have since tried to get my band to play some of them (luckily they said no).
  17. For sale is my 2 year old Vanderkley 1x15 +6" 4 ohms cab. I got this new from Bass Direct in 2016, and its been well looked after. The photos should show you that. The only noticeable marks are on the 4 bottom feet, which is to be expected. Its done 3-5 gigs, but mostly been used for rehearsals. Full spec's here http://www.vanderkleyamp.nl/products/cabinets/115mn6/ As i dont drive and dont wish to post it, it would have to be collection from me either from home (SE1, near the OXO tower), or work (EC1N, Hatton Garden). if you wish to try it out then it will have to be at my work, in the evening. id also have to arrange to get it there but i can do that fairly quickly, within a day or two. No trades, as ive already replaced this, and only very close offers please. Not in a rush to sell, but i do need shot of it as i dont have much room to store it. Photos taken today, so this is the current condition of it. IMO its close to looking perfect but i dont use that word as someone can always disprove it.
  18. I thought there was a lot of irony in the first half of that article, the bits about manufacturers making huge claims about their gear. Still, he makes nice cabs and hand come a long way, i wish I’m all the best.
  19. It’s better than my first time around with this, there are better tone prints for OD, but its not a pedal I would use for OD unless i had to. There is a tone print that has been designed for clean boost, and this is the one ive been using. It’s perfect for just making the tone louder, with a bit of an extra edge to the tone. Very usable but not a drive/OD effect really.
  20. oh yes, a very powerful live band. i saw them on the Live Killers (or whatever it was billed as back then)tour, never heard a live band fill out a venue with so much coming from so little since.
  21. For me its more the guitar tone and vocal lines that bore me after a while. Again, i do like them but i just cant listen to them too ling in one sitting.
  22. Never been a huge fan, but i do like a lot of their songs. I do get bored with their sound if i listen for too long. I find it very 'samey', although i do appreciate their talent.
  23. I was going to edit to say 'cant wait to download this one', but i felt it better to come clean and admit i didn't read every post 🙂
  24. I watched them film one of the American street scenes in Hatton Garden (where i work) last Nov. Amazing transformation. Not seen the film yet.
