ive used not many in my Squier CV Jazz, but the best of the bunch for me has been my Wizard 74's. I tried the 84's but i didnt really like them so go a set in between the 64's and 84's.

best iPhone app for recording a rehearsal?
dave_bass5 replied to Monkey Steve's topic in General Discussion
Totally agree. The DR-05 is a fantastic small recorder, with very good quality. We record all our gigs and rehearsals on mine. It also means the recordings are more or less as they are in the room, and not compressed so that the balance is all wrong. -
Your favourite (famous - e.g. mainstream) music videos
dave_bass5 replied to EBS_freak's topic in General Discussion
I love this video, especially the bass tone. -
I love the look of these new basses. I have no issues other than weight with my original V7, but these new necks look really nice, and just what I look for in a neck. I wonder if they will sell the necks only, to fit on th older bodies.

Cool thread topic. I was going to start one about the design of my new TCE RS212 cab. I was surprised they put two ports, next to each other on it. Im sure there is a reason and its all worked out in software frist, but i was wondering why two, why next to each other, and why these cabs are not the norm when it comes to design.

How do I know if my combo is loud enough to gig with...
dave_bass5 replied to MacDaddy's topic in Amps and Cabs
When i got back in to playing bass i gigged a Ashdown EB-180 1x15, and then a MAG300 C115 for about two years. Just social clubs and a few pubs. It was always loud enough but after a while i realised just being heard wasn't good enough. No one complained about the bass, but being heard and being felt were two different things. There was no real thickness to the tone at the back of the rooms. Not that i had to fill the room, but even though i could always be heard, i couldn't always be felt. -
How do I know if my combo is loud enough to gig with...
dave_bass5 replied to MacDaddy's topic in Amps and Cabs
Yep. in fact i normally play a bit louder at rehearsals than i do at the average gig. I normally put it down to the drummer being too loud but good to know there is a real reason for it. Ive never found shop or home playing to be any indication of how a rig will sound at a gig. To my ears all rigs/combos sound great at home, but when they are pushed at gigs their tone can change quite a lot. -
IIR there was one guy who always seemed miserable and looked like he didn't want to be there. This was at the last shop in the last year or so before it closed. I do remember there being a thread about him but it was a long time ago. There was also another guy there that couldn't do enough for me.Offer to put new strings on any bass i wanted to try out. Personally i had very good service from them right up until the end. I even had a few good chats with Chris the tech there. He was the one that told me about how much Squier JV's were wroth, and that it was the neck that was the big deal. I had taken mine in to get it looked at, when i was getting back in to playing, and i remember he was all over it. To me it was just a cheap bass that i had for years and never got around to selling it because it was a cheap bass. I ended up trading it for £300 towards my first real Fender. In case anyone was wondering why so low, only the wooden body and neck were original, all hardware had been changed.

Cheap tiny envelope filters: Donner Dynamic wah / Eno TC-61
dave_bass5 replied to mcnach's topic in Effects
ive got a Donner Tuner. Somewhere in there is a joke about post gig Kebabs lol. These generic Chinese companies are putting out some impressively priced pedals, and makes me laugh at the DG etc stuff when i see those prices. My two Joyo OD's are the best ive every used. Both cost less than £100 total. -
This thread is quite a contrast to the other, old thread about how poor CS was at the BC before it closed down.

Thanks for the info. Might not bother then. -
Pedal board mounting tape - amazing value!
dave_bass5 replied to Al Krow's topic in Accessories and Misc
Has anyone tried this stuff? https://www.amazon.co.uk/25mm-Black-SJ3550-Dual-Lock/dp/B004AQOBS2/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&qid=1540389440&sr=8-18&keywords=3m+velcro I'm finding the supplied tape that came with my PT to be quite poor (as DB says above). Edited to say, i know this wont work with velcro, and the whole board would need covering again. i was just wondering if anyone uses this type of thing. -
I got one of these about a month or so ago. Its very small and just does enough without all the extra stuff i dont need. Seems just as accurate as any other tuner ive owned. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01EYB97GI/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Saying that, i did treat myself to a TCE Polytune 3 to replace it, as.......well, its a cool tuner to own.

Not bass combo, but i have a guitar combo and love it. Very loud and punchy.

I'm gonna be in so much trouble at rehearsal
dave_bass5 replied to AdrianP's topic in General Discussion
Give me the above over some self indigent overplayed jazz 'expo' any day. Jazz is like watching paint dry, only it seems to take much longer than the paint does, and its not nearly as exciting. If you can get up and play, and it makes others happy then surely that is a job well done. As Weller said, 'thats entertainment' its more than possible to enjoy the gigs, enjoy the songs, and get paid. If you only join a band to make money and have no interest in enjoying yourself then yes, you are in the wrong job, but thats not my experience playing all the obvious party songs. Then again, im not adverse to seeing 300 people dancing in front of me. -
i got my first ever 'real' bass from the Wapping store, when they were upstairs. It was a Squier JV Pass. Still got the receipt although not the bass unfortunately. I got a TE head there a few months after, and had the pleasure of saying hello to John Entwistle while i was in there. Very decent bloke IIR, but made one hell of a racket lol. If anyone remembers Wapping high street from that era, its completely, different now. You really wouldn't recognise it now. We used to rehearse at Jumbo (or was it Elephant) studios there. Good times although bad at the the same time.

Ive always found this to be rubbish, based on the fact that a lot of musicians go to gigs, and therefore would be interested in the sound. I get the idea of the quote, and for the non musical general public it may well be true, but audiences are a mixture of both IME.
-
Yeah, thats the one. Dirt cheep but very powerful.
-
Same here, although I already had the SC, I just went back to it. Currently I like using the two TCE multi band tone prints with my Spectrdrive.
-
Yep. i got a second had TT off here earlier in the year. Adds a lot of versatility to the AS and the TT is so small its easy to fit on a board without moving other pedals (sort of).
-
Oh, you were serious? I thought you were having a laugh. Yes, I use a pick. Most bass reviewers don’t demonstrate pick playing so I can’t realy get an idea of how a bass sounds for me.
-
Not like a real bass player, no 🙂

Ive gone through a few ODs this year, inc a Pork Loin, SA Afterschock, COG Knightfall 66, TCE Mojomoj and Joyo OJ and Ultimate drive. I thought i had found THE one in the COG, it ticks all the boxes and more, but ive gone back to the cheapest of the lot, the Joyo UD. i just cant find anything else that sounds a open and full as this cheap pedal. Even though it lacks features many of the other have, its the basic tone that i love.

Live music venues close to London Waterloo?
dave_bass5 replied to Stylon Pilson's topic in General Discussion
I live at Waterloo (the station is at the end of my road). i cant think of anything in the area that puts on this type of band, although there is the Royal Festival Hall and Southbank. -
i dont slap or play finger style, so that rules out 99% of all bass videos for me.
