I never liked Weller or the Jam until my old singer (huge Weller fan) said we should give it a try. Only did 4 gigs but it was great fun leaning those songs and I still like listening to the older Weller songs. Not really in to the latest stuff. Back then our drummer was out off a tribute band called the Jamm. To be honest I’d rather go and listen to a tribute band, or From the Jam, rather than go and see Weller. Good luck with the project.

I was doing the clubs in the south east until a couple of years ago. The average fee for a 4 piece was £350 - £450. I know larger bands got more. This was for a normal Fri/Sat night. For special events it went up a bit, but depending on the club. playing time varied between 2- 2 1/2 hours. On top of that we had to give the agent between 15-20%. All our club gigs were booked through agents, and we were told how much we woudl get paid.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. its a new bass (Nov 2018) so not likely fret wear, but i do think it might be uneven. im on my second set of strings so its not that. If i press down really hard i can avoid it, same with plucking very softly, but thats not the answer. if increase the neck bow it does make a difference, but again, thats not the answer as the action then changes. Might take it to the Gallery and get them to have a look. i think it could do with a check up anyway, some of the fret edges are quite rough.

No problem. All i did was Google it and post a link. I have the file somewhere but it was quicker to do it this way. it helped me a lot when i was dong a Weller tribute band.

Just a quick update regarding the Basswitch Sonic Spark. It arrived yesterday and i had a play around last night, only on headphones though. To my ears its close to the VPF filter on Markbass heads, but its also sweepable so the dip can be moved. Also similar to a BDDI i guess, without real EQ controls or the set dip in the mids. Adding in the overtones/harmonics then warms it all up a bit. Both work independent, but the Enhance is also effected by how the Tone is set. dialling back in the original signal allows for more mid control. Quite cool for a 4 knob box. There is no over the top colouring, its not trying too hard to replicate an Ampeg amp, but there is definitely an added depth and width to the tone, and the harmonics seem to let the notes poke through without sounding harsh and bright. My COG 66 seems to love it, it sounds lot more meaty using my usual settings. It can get close to how i use my BDDI if i want it to, but i think id need more EQ options to use ti like that. Its a very powerful output. This being the case i have my Spectradrive at the end of the chain to tame things if they get out of hand. At least, thats how i perceive it. Next week ill get to use it with my rig, but i can already tell its going to be a keeper. Its not a major effect, just something that will sit there on all the time. Definitely taken over from the BDDI for now.

Thanks for the reply. The buzz sort of goes away with a higher action, but if i strike each string with more force it will come back at that one point if that makes sense. I play with a pick which seems to make it worse. it seems to only be there at the attack part of the note, it doesn't happen once the string is ringing. . I agree, it sounds like an uneven fret, either 5th or 6th, so ill need to put some straight edges on them. ive never had this happen on just the one string before.

Having got my Jack Casady bass set up to just how i want it (more or less), im getting fret buzz at the 5th fret on the A string, and only this one note. its quite loud when playing in isolation, although masked when the band are playing. All other notes seem fine. Ive tried to find an issue with the frets but cant see anything. Going to run a straight edge over it later but its strange that its just that one note. Any ideas what could be causing this?.

2019 Gear Abstinence Challenge (Updated with 'rules')

Well im out as my new Basswitch Sonic Spark arrived yesterday. I went from 0% GAS to 100% and then purchase in about 30mins. -
and Markbass of course 🙂

Sounds like the Spectradrive might the the way to go then. The EQ is really nice, without being over the top. The OD is the weakest point though, at least for me. Having the Spectracomp built in saves space on the board, if you can live with the EQ and comp in the same position in the chain.

Cant really help with getting the specified tone, but i find when i use my JC I hear a slightly compressed tone anyway, and this bass seems to need less OD/gain compared to my P bass to get really nasty. Not much help, just saying i love the tone from the JC.

Adding Tube Warmth to Soiled State Amps

Is this a joke thread? Seems like the OP was making puns as there is obviously no need for this thread to be legit is there? -
Hell Is Other People (who know you play in a band)

Not music related but im very much in to photography, and have some nice gear. When out walking around town i often get stopped and asked 'oooh, you look like a pro, would you mind taking our photo with my phone/ipad/camera'. Quite often i reply that if i was a pro, then i woudl have to charge them for my time. -

Yep, lots of nice Pre amps out there but untimely most are just replicating EQ that I have on my amp, but with an added ‘feature’, normally OD. My dirt comes from my COG Knightfall 66, which I find amazing both for OD and just thickening up my tone, but it seems to lack the real tube girth (love that word). I’m hoping the BW will just stay on all the time doing that, and leave the COG to do what it does best. Coupled with my Jack Casado I think I’m going to have a lovely fat tone. My next rehearsal isn’t until 23rd Jan. Until then ill only be able to use it with headphones so not really a good test, although I will post my thoughts on using it like this.

As long as its not Hermes 😒

i agree, its not a unique tone, but in my situation i have always used something like a BDDI to warm up my SS heads. This has always worked well but ive always felt i wanted the warming without too much colouration. Ive gone through a few Pre amps/EQ's but keep coming back to the BDDI. I could hear shades of the BDDI in the video, but without the bit i dont always need. I always play with a pick and tend to not move my hand position much, so im hoping it will fatten up things a bit. To me is a bit like the Aphex Big bottom pedal i had years ago, but with a bit more 'magic'. We shall see. im not looking for dirt or OD as such, i have a COG for that, just looking to add a bit more width to the tone.

Never heard of this before, but because you posted about it i went and had a look. Damm if this isnt what ive been looking for (but didn't know it). I can see me getting one very soon and finally getting away from my BDDI. EDIT: What the heck, just ordered one from BD. i hope this is 'the one' lol.
-
The latest BDDI has a mid knob, with selectable freq (only 2 though). It does make a big difference over the older versions. I loved my VTBass DI (never got on with the stomp box version), but i keep going back to the BDDI as it has a warmth i just couldn't get out of the VTBass.

I know many like GG but after the issue with my GK head and the response i got i wouldn't use them again. I just dont have any faith in their customer service.

Thanks Peter. I went for the 20th Anniversary JC mainly for the fact that it came with a gig bag, but the front pocket is useless so id like something a bit better.

That was the first promo video for the SD. IIR it got slated a lot back then, for not really showing off the features. Lovely looking bass though.
-
I found it very good for headphone practice, but Al is used to Zooms and they have proper amp/cab modelling, so i didnt want to go overboard on the SD praise as i know its not as goods as he already has. The killer feature for me is having 80hz boost on the low knob. I love that freq (80-100hz).
