Ever had that one bass that you can't find a good reason to sell?
dave_bass5 replied to Chris2112's topic in Bass Guitars
Ive got 2 Squier CV basses that ill never use, but cant be bothered to sell them as they aren't worth a lot, and have been modded so not sure of their value. Both play really well so its not like i couldn't play them. I expect ill give them both (a P and a Jazz) to my son at some point. I had a Squier JV P bass in a wardrobe for about 20 years. I got it new when they came out, and due to the low value that i paid never thought it was worth selling. I did eventually trade it in at the Bass centre. -
It is indeed.

I already have the OJ, and i like it, but its not quite what i want at the moment. I think I’m now sorted (yeah, yeah). The Joyo UD arrived and from the moment i plugged it in i had a huge smile on my face. This is the one i think I’m looking this week lol. Whether ill use it much is debatable, its more lively than I’m used to, but it is the tone ive been wanting without spending silly money. I plan to use it for Come together. I want to try and get a Maralyin Manson feel to the bass line. The B3n patch gets me there, and now i have it from my board. If its on the board i will use it though. It’s not doing anything the AS could probably do, but its way ahead compared to the Mojomojo. It’s a lot of OD, even on a very low setting, but its just doing what i wanted it to do. Very powerful, easily gets thats that B3n tone I was looking for. Ive got the Mojomojo and UD on my board and switching between them i can see i have no use for the MJMJ anymore,. To my untrained ears the MJMJ sounds warmer, and fuller, but the drive seems to sound like something thats being overdriven when it shouldn’t be. The UD on the other hand is hardly altering my tone, but adding an obvious OD to it. I guess this is what ive been looking for. It sounds more full on. I suppose I’ve been looking for the wrong pedals recently. Liking the tone of the B7K should have shown me that overdriven tube was not what i was looking for, but a proper OD instead. I know the UD doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of the B7K, not even the old version, but it just seems to work well with my BDDI in front of it. This is all on headphones so far (in to a bypassed patch on my sons G1on), but as thats how I’m using my gear at home its still a good indication of how things sound. Back in the studio next month so hopefully ill have got things settled on the board. For now i see no need to spend any more money.

Yeah, the AS can definitely get close. Even the default high gain is close enough, and with a bit of tweaking in the EQ section im sure it will do. Im not going to worry about that for now though, im just going to keep on with the cheap pedals until i find something that i dont even have in my head yet lol. Ill know it when i find it though.

Yeah, thats the patch. Very simple but needs a B7K by the looks of it. I only really need it for one song, hence i cant justify buying the B7K. the obvious answer is to use the B3n but it wont fit on my board, and having it separate defeats the idea of having it all in one place.

I have plenty of ways to get it back if its too noticeable. I am hoping that when i use the UD it will be a bit thinner than my clean tone anyway. I find the MojoMojo to retain the low end fine, but ive been backing the Low end off a bit when its engaged to keep things clearer. If the UD is a bit thinner thats fine. I’m trying my best 🙂 Ive seen plenty of YT clips with tones i like, but none that i would expect to get with my set up. Before, i was looking for my clean tone, only dirtier if that makes sense. This was achieved to an extent with the AS, and definitely with the Mojomojo, but now i want a OD tone, one that isn’t just my tone with more drive. I’d also love to get the B3n’s 042 patch, but this includes the DG B7K effect, and I’m not buying one of those.

I wrote a book about being in a covers band
dave_bass5 replied to Dave Vader's topic in General Discussion
Off on holiday next week, a week on a beach, so ive just ordered my first book in a few years (the last was Guy Pratt’s book). Perfect for the beach by the sound of it. Cant wait. Will get the second book for a caravan holiday later in the year. -
I do still have it, i doubt ill ever get rid of it, and yes, ive played around a lot with the settings (using my phone). I tend to use it with ther blend quite high, and it do like what i hear. I have no doubt it can get the tone in my head, but I’m just experimenting with other pedals at the moment. Ive tried the DG stuff and never really got on with it, love the BDDI and that the one pedal ive now brought 3 times, but I want to see what else is out there, in the budget end of the market. I tend to keep finding the previous tone ive been looking for in my OD’s, rather the tone I’m currently looking for. At least with these cheap pedals its not going to cost much to make a mistake.

Actually ive just ordered a Joyo UD, as although the MM is nice, its a bit dark and tame for what i was looking for (at the moment). Ill keep it for now as i only gave it one shot, and that was through a rig totally different to mine. I expect it will get used again as it is a great sounding always on pedal. I might even replace my BDDI as an experiment. I dont know what ill be buying next week to replace the UD with lol.

Im sure you know about the Cioks DC-5. Not cheap but one of the best IMO. Fits perfectly. As far as lights coming on so its ok, definitely not my experience with my Source Audio After Shock. It kept crashing all of a sudden, and i was about send it back when it was pointed out to me that i was under powering it. I had moved the power source to a lower powered output without realising it. These digital things are a bit temperamental.

Yeah, my old guitarist used to play a Fender Strat and he always used to say how unstable it can be when he used the trem. He never got around to replacing it with soemthnig better though. This is only for home playing so maybe ill just get used to it. Unfortunately its going back, as the volume pot is acting up. Its been cutting out and now its got to the point where i need to pull up on it to get a sound. At th emoment ther eis a pice of thick card under the knob. I know these things are cheap to fix, and ive got the skill to do it, but at less than 2 weeks old ill get the whole guitar replaced. -
🙂 ive never had an issue with not using one, but i also like what i hear when i do. Im pretty sure a lot of others feel this way, but are too 'cool' so say it lol.

Get away with what? It made me laugh but im guessing thats not it.

Pretty much my pattern as well. It normally comes about by me reading a line in a post on here and have a 'wow' moment, so i go and get one. These days i use a Sectracomp, and i have actually gone back to it from a higher end comp, but i think i use it because its on my board so its no effort to take with me. Not sure if i need it but it doesn't seem to do any harm.

And it would be quite easy for someone to ruin a venues reputation without real cause.

i got a Mojomojo a few days ago. Spur of the moment thing really. For £40 i love this thing. Its certainly outed my Aftershock. I was looking for a more dense OD, as i found a lovely patch in my B3n but would like to get close to that using my pedals. Problem is that patch is using a B7K, and i dont want one of those. The MM doesn't even get close, but what i love about it is it works so well as an always on, with a bit 'more' to it. I think this is the pedal ive been looking for for ages, although not the one im looking for at the moment. Still, its outed my AS, my Pork Loin and my Joyo OJ.....for now.

God yes. It all gets very dark and serious when that starts. A silly story but we used top play a large club in Slough. During the high stakes Bingo on a Sunday night they banned any talking, phones off etc. Our guitarist, being a forgetful chap, didnt turn his off. Off he goes across the room to the bar. Whispers to the bar man for 3 pints, and starts to walk back with them. Now, im not sure why i did this, but i decided as he was crossing the dance floor to call his mobile. It might have been because i knew he had the Dambusters theme tune as his ring tone, and maybe because there was no way to put the drinks down, but it was the funniest moment we ever had at that venue.....expect for him of course 🙂

Social clubs. Although we can get them, and they pay well, we have decided to try and do some pub gigs. The money might be rubbish but the atmosphere cant be any worse than a half (or less) empty Social club on a Sat night.

Just wanted to report back and say im over the moon with this guitar. I dont know why but its so much easier to play than my sons HB Strat. Niggles would be i wish it has a gloss neck, but that's a minor thing and i have had basses with the same finish and they were fine No fret buzz that i can hear, frets feel like they are all seated and not sticking out etc. Neck seem straight and very comfortable. I will (maybe) change the bridge later on, or block it. I have no need for the tremolo arm, so would prefer rock steady tuning over that. Its slipping a bit here and there, but nothing major. Very pleased with the outcome. I just need to learn how to play it now. -

The only time ive needed the DI out was for this recording session, and i did ask the engineer to take the feed from my Q/strip anyway, so im loath to spend anything on the amp. I have two DI's on my pedal board, and another map im more than happy to use instead, so i may just not bother getting it fixed. the map has never cut out as such, its just taken a long time to work in the past, but those were isolated incidents that may or may not have been down to the venue. Im sure it wont be expensive, but even the cost of sending it might be more than i want to pay. I just think that if its an internal issue, then i should expect it to be fixed for nothing, as its not happened due to miss use or damage.

No problem. As it turns out it was good move, as ive found 3 patches in my Zoom B3n that will bring everything to life. Even just recording them in Garage Band on my Ipad Pro has made a big difference. This is what happens when your drummer hasn't a clue. Im having to go back and play less strictly to cover up his timing issues. All sorted, thanks anyway.

Cheers Guys. GK's importers over here have said send it them and they will have a look at it free of charge, and then give me a quote for fixing it. The place (very well known on here, but not a specialist bass shop) i got it from sent me this when i mentioned the 6 year law, and that i believe its a manufacturing fault. " That is if it turns out, i.e can be proven to be a manufacturing defect which is impossible to do given that the XLR has only been checked 2 years after purchase. The retailer and the supplier have responsibilities to the customer to supply functioning goods but the customer is also responsible for checking all the functions of the device upon receipt and reporting any issues within 30 days. Anything outside of this period falls under the warranty which in this case is 1 year so even the warranty expired over a year ago "

I asked for a copy of the demo without bass so i can work out new bass lines BEFORE going back in to the studio and re doing it.
