Thanks. I love the Tonhammer + SVT810 combo. Very punchy.

Thanks (and for your other reply). I now have both at home and feel the NUX is going to stay. I cant see me going direct to house at the moment, but i do use headphones all the time at home. The NUX just feels warmer and rounder, even without the IR on. It has a kick i couldn’t get from the Laney. The Laney just seems a bit weak to me. The EQ is quite subtle. As you say, it’s probably a better front end for an amp. I also like the fact that the NUX is simple to use. Very much like my BDDI. The Laney is easy to use but i found i was messing about with the switched and Mid controls a bit too much. The NUX will stay.

Ive been left very cold by the expensive basses ive tried. Ive played a few Dingwalls and couldnt wait to get back to a Fender. Too sterile for me. Same with a very expensive bass that i cant remember its name, had about 100 knobs and switches and no soul.

Years ago i brought a MM Sub off a member here. It arrived the same day i got a Lakeland Duck Dunn (again). I took both to a gig and found the Sub was actually better for our older Motown stuff. In fact i used it for 2 out of 3 sets. I’ve always wanted to get another but still haven’t got around to it.

I struggle sometimes to make a Jazz bass work in a band setting. I play with a pick 99% of the time and I just find I can't sit in the mix as well as with my P bass. I still use a Jazz occasionaly, but it's a bit more work sometimes.

Yes, it does seem quite a bit more than the old version. quite surprised how expensive the Xvives are compared to the newer systems coming along. From experience (my singer) they aren't any more robust or less prone to drop outs (quite the opposite for the second bit).

These are the ones i have as backup, and my guitarist also has a set. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0B9W5S4N8?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Yes, this is how i feel, and quite often i dont reach perfection but don’t really worry about it. I think iconic bits should be played, but it will depend on the song i guess. Id never even try any Jaco etc stuff, but I’ll try and learn the whole song if i can, not just a couple of bits and make the rest up because the audience wont notice etc. As a bass player i can normally get very close to the tone on a recording, so just because the singer might not sound the same doesn't mean i don’t need to worry. If you can do it, whats the issue with doing it, especially if you are getting paid to do it. I learnt loads of songs quickly back in the day, and over the years ive gone back and fixed them. When i find im playing something wrong ill try and fix it, not just go ‘meh, the audience are still dancing so how cares’ etc. For me its about self pride. There is no reason on earth not to try your best at anything you do. Worst case ive witnessed is a band i auditioning on keys last year. They were doing Crazy Little thing call love. The bass player played just repeating root notes for each chord, instead of the walking bass line. When i mentioned it (as diplomatically as i could), it turned out they have been doing it this way for about a year, at gigs. No one had ever complained or commented at gigs, although they realised it wasnt right. The bass player ‘just didnt have time to work it out’ I walked away from that one.

Has anyone managed to compare these two in a band settings? I know Andertons have a shoot out with both in it (and totally wrong info about the tube), but id like to hear from actual users if there are any. I just got the Nux and other than the software/connection side i think it’s really nice. Very usable tones. My worry is that the IR’s are making it sound great, but without that turned on it sounds just ok. I dont think id use the IR’s with a bass rig but will at home. The Digbeth seems to be more versatile, but larger and doesnt have the IR. I like the idea of the Tilt knob. Any thoughts? Not looking for recommendations for anything else, just wondering about how these two compare.

Its crazy. Im seeing people loose sleep over how my milliseconds their compressor has dialled in for attack, how many string windings they have on the A string, how straight the neck is etc because the audience will probably walk out if any of that isn't set right, , and yet dont care less if they play the wrong notes in a song 😀 Again, this thread wasn't about the fact that you should play it exactly, but I do find it satisfying when I know it's as close as I can get it. Al. You left out the most iconic bit of that song? How and why did you come to that decicison? Not judging, just curious.
-
Im not judging anyone at all, play what you like. I try and get it correct but dont aways manage it. I even said in my first post that ive always played it wrong (wrong to how i should play it) and no one ever noticed. It’s just that i made this thread just to point out how this has been missed for decades by those that teach this song etc, not to tell everyone how to play it.

Yeah, it's the sounding off that made me listen a bit closer. IIR this came out after the Commitments movie, which prompted a lot of covers bands at the time to start playing Motown songs. I agree, I think he played it wrong and no one has picked up on this before. Now im aware of it I think it's ok to play this, even though in isolation it doesn't seem right. I think this version is probably the version a lot of pub bands do compared to the original.

Other than the Aguilar of course, what are the other two? Just ordered this pedal, looks really cool, and after a lot of research the videos of this are the ones I felt produce what I want. I know who Melvin is but not sure what those two preamps are. To my ears they all sound great. Cheers.

When I first started playing bass in a covers band I had to learn about 40 songs quickly. It's only recently that ive had to play them again and cant believe how far off the mark some of my bass lines were in places (on the whole ok though). And I played with that band for 15 years. No one ever said anything.

Damn, very tempted. I’ve got thier 2.4ghz version and it’s been fantastic. Not sure I’d get much more out of the 5.8 system for the extra money though.
